Michael sat in the back stairwell and on the landing so he could look outside. He had placed Nikita on their bed and watched her sleep for a while, but he couldn’t stay there.
He had done so many things wrong.
He stared out the window and knew that things weren’t as bad during that stunt at the house because of the second hostage. With the second hostage and Jason/Adam pretending to be Ben, the attention was split in too many ways and allowed them to sneak into the house. It would have never been a Section One profile while Michael was in Section.
But it was probably the way that Nikita ran missions once she was in charge.
The late news had run a story about the two gangs taking each other out and that more details would come in the morning when a press conference would occur. Michael had no doubt that during that morning press conference the ultimate truth about what had happened to Manny would happen.
Nat had sent a text that simply said, “Been called in for big changes”.
There should be happiness about the fact that Veronica was home and safe. But instead, Michael was stunned with the fact that he had ignored Nikita in his anger to the point that she had almost bled out in the van. Even before he was allowed to take Nikita upstairs, Ellie decided just a bit more blood from Walter would stabilize Nikita even further.
He could have lost her because of his stubbornness.
“I thought you’d be in bed with Nikita,” Walter spoke as he turned the corner from the downstairs and saw Michael sitting on the landing. Michael turned his head to look at Walter and then turned to stare out the window. “I thought you went home.”
“I donated blood,” Walter shrugged his shoulders. “Probably not the best time for me to be driving.”
Michael shook his head as he knew that Walter was only staying because he was concern that Michael was making more mistakes.
“No one told you that this was going to be easy, Michael,” Walter spoke as he came up half the stairs and then sat down. “Hell… it should be hard.”
“I don’t need a pep talk right now,” Michael shook his head as he refused to look at Walter.
“So you’ll have a pity party instead,” Walter commented as he chuckled. “How is that working out for you?”
Michael dropped his head to glare at Walter but he didn’t say anything. Michael waited for several minutes and then looked back to the black sky outside. “It’s harder out here.”
“In the real world?” Walter spoke as he then cleared his throat. “I didn’t think there were rules for out here… I didn’t know that there was an easy clause.”
“I’m not looking for an easy button, Walter,” Michael retorted as he didn’t even look back at Walter. “I’m off synch.”
“Yeah,” Walter agreed as he nodded his head up and down. “And you are going to have to work thru that… because you can do that. Sugar, can’t.”
“She could have told me that she was hurt. I’m not the only one guilty on what happened,” Michael declared firmly. Walter waited for Michael to look at him. Walter tilted his head slowly. “This is the woman that had to hide that she was pregnant. Hiding that she was hurt was probably nothing. It was probably routine. She had to hide a lot of things…”
“Oh please,” Michael rolled his eyes as he shook his head. “Don’t give her an excuse for this and blame it solely on me.”
“Come on, Michael,” Walter retorted back. “She had to hide a pregnancy. She had to hide that Section One was closing up. She had to hide that she had a child out there. She had to hide all of these resources that we so easily use but don’t really understand… this is her MO and you better get used to it.”
“This isn’t Nikita,” Michael declared as he shook his head from side to side.
“It is Nikita,” Walter replied back with a firm voice. “You just don’t know this Nikita. To pretend that she was the same Nikita that you knew before you left Section… that’s you being naïve.”
Michael leaned his head back against the wall. He closed his eyes. “Does that mean that we aren’t meant to be together? That we are wrong together?”
“Did I say that?” Walter challenged Michael. Michael sighed and finally shook his head negatively form side to side. “No.”
“You are meant to be with her…. But she is doing a better job at adjusting to Michael, the father… than you are adjusting to Nikita, the woman who used to run Section One,” Walter pointed out as he pushed up from the stairs. “You should be in bed with her.”
“She isn’t going to go anywhere,” Michael replied and Walter blinked his eyes and walked downstairs. He looked back up at Michael. “She left a couple minutes ago, Michael.”
Michael leaned forward. “No… she was hurt.”
“Not just physically… and I would have caused her more physical pain if I would have tried to stop her,” Walter stated as he looked at Michael. “Maybe she’ll come back soon.”
“She probably wants to disappear,” Michael rasped as he shook his head. “She could… easily…”
“She could have disappeared many times. But she doesn’t want to do that,” Walter stated as he shifted. “I think I should stay around.”
“Chasing after her now isn’t going to do any good,” Michael sighed as he looked up the stairs and rubbed his hands thru his hair. “Why? Why couldn’t she just stay?”
“You know this part of Nikita. This part of her didn’t change,” Walter shook his head from side to side before disappearing to the darkness. Michael stood there for and wondered if Walter was just saying this to get him to worry.
But as Michael approached the door the bedroom, the cracked door indicated that Walter was telling the truth. He entered the door and for a moment he had hoped that Nikita had left a note, but the bed was empty, even neatly made.
Michael sat down on the edge and exhaled.
It was like he was at the beginning of this journey after Walter told him that Nikita was alive and on the outside.
