Michael took his coffee cup and walked towards the spot where Nikita was standing. She was rocking slightly from foot to foot at the kitchen table. Her hair was still wet and Michael brushed it away and kissed her neck gently.
Nikita leaned forwards to place her tea cup down and to lean back into Michael’s arms. Michael had taken a sip of his coffee as Nikita had moved. He wrapped his arms around Nikita and leaned her forward so he could put his coffee cup down. Nikita giggled and Michael rubbed his nose against her shoulder.
The front door closed loudly and Nikita leaned into Michael’s embraced as the boxers and the black t-shirt of Michael’s that she was wearing did not protect her from the chilly air that ran down the hallway quicker than the feet that were heading towards them.
“Oh geez…” Adam groaned as he came to a halt. “Haven’t you two had enough of each other?”
Nikita tilted her head to the side before saying, “Adam, what are you talking about?”
“ You didn’t go to work, did you, Dad?” Adam questioned and Michael just stood there holding Nikita in his arms. Adam groaned. “So you stayed in bed all day with Nikita? Aren’t you done with the sex yet?”
“Adam,” Michael snapped and Adam rolled his eyes. “You signed the permission slip for me to take the sex education class… although I could have anything I want online…”
“Don’t remind me,” Michael warned and Adam shook his head. “Come on you two… you are just out of the shower like you both were this morning when I went to school… I know what that means!”
“Adam, you don’t know that,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders as she tried to play it off. Adam went to the table and pouted in the chair. “Look… I’m happy that you two are clicking on a chemical and a physical level… but it’s been like this for days now. .. and Christmas is in less than two weeks and there is nothing done but a ton of boxes in the spare rooms…”
Nikita looked at Michael with some shame on her face. She didn’t realize that they had been just floating in a haze of celebrating life. But she liked how she felt when she was doing this and she didn’t want to chance feeling anything else right now.
“Do you have a suggestion?” Michael questioned his son. Adam leaned forward and nodded his head. “First… we are going to have dinner… a home cooked dinner… not some random take out that you think that I want that is filled with cheese and grease… and you aren’t going to have Walter take me to the library… or have Jason come over to play videos in the game room… you are going to watch holiday movies with me tonight…”
Nikita pulled away from Michael and felt underdressed now standing in front of Adam. “I thought you liked that…”
“I’m glad I didn’t have to hear anything,” Adam retorted as he again rolled his eyes. He pulled back as he realized that his father would only take so much of this attitude. “But I’d like us to spend some time together as a family.”
Michael nodded his head as he reached out to wrap an arm around Nikita. He didn’t like her standing away from him. They did nothing wrong. They needed this time and it wasn’t that they weren’t looking out for Adam. “Ok… is that all?”
“No,” Adam lifted his head up strong. “Tomorrow is Saturday… and we are going to decorate… and go cut down a Christmas tree… maybe even string popcorn…”
“String popcorn?” Michael questioned but at the same time that Nikita asked, “Cut down a tree?”
Adam nodded his head. “Yes… to cutting down the tree… My dad has taken me every year for the real Christmas to cut down our tree… its fun.”
“And no,” Adam whispered as he looked at his dad. “I just said string the popcorn for effect.”
Michael nodded his head and sighed. “Is that all?”
“I’ll think of more… for the entire weekend...” Adam announced as he stood up. “And maybe for Christmas… you should convert the garage over so I can live there… give you two some privacy.”
“No dice, kiddo,” Michael retorted quickly as he forced a smile, but his son knew that he had pushed too hard. Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I had to try.”
“You wouldn’t have gotten that past me either,” Nikita declared and Adam nodded his head. He knew that it wouldn’t be acceptable for him, but it didn’t hurt trying. “You might want to find some warmer clothing, Nikita. It’s cold cutting a tree down.”
“Adam,” Michael spoke but his son was running down the hallway. Nikita looked at Michael swallowed hard. “Do we have anything to cook for dinner?”
