Adam sat between them in the trailer that was pulling them up the dirt road to where they would be allowed to pick a Christmas tree. Nikita looked at Michael and then adjusted her gloves again as the silence was unreal.
Adam hadn’t heard them. But he could tell when he walked into the kitchen. Nikita felt guilty in some regards and in other ways she felt like she was misunderstood. Adam didn’t know how it felt and he had years until he should know.
“So…” Michael spoke as he tried to get Adam to talk. Adam looked at his dad and shook his head. “We were to do stuff today…”
“And we are,” Michael pointed out as he looked at his son. “We are trying, Adam.”
“It didn’t even last for twenty-four hours,” Adam retorted as Nikita turned her head to the side. She didn’t like when Michael and Adam fought. She knew that she was the cause of the issues. It was a reminder that she wasn’t in that family and she was still apart from Michael and Adam.
She gazed at the trees as they passed and knew of the numerous other times that she spent starting out to the world that was passing her. There were missions to the Alps that she stared out the window for hours as the other operatives would play cards. There were limo rides in Aspen for one mission where she was dressed to the nines but still felt out of the loop even though the target was showering attention on her.
“Nikita… Earth to Nikita….” Adam called out as he shook her elbow. Nikita turned her head and wiped her face while looking at him. “Ah… what Adam? I didn’t hear you?”
“I asked if you ever had a Christmas tree.” Adam inquired and it felt like another blow to her right now. Nikita shook her head from side to side. “No.”
“No?” Adam asked as he blinked. “That’s all you are going to say?”
“You asked a yes or no question,” Nikita defensively spoke as she looked at Michael and then looked away. “You know that I didn’t have a childhood Adam…”
“But… there had to be something…”
“Adam,” Michael spoke gently as he wished that he was beside Nikita. They all were knocked off balance as the trailer bounced over a large rock. “Kita?”
“I think we are there…” Nikita broke the attention from her to point her hand forward to where there were people pulling trees to a waiting area. Adam stood up and nodded his head. “There are some nice ones left… not everyone took the good ones yet…”
Michael pulled Adam back down to wait for the trailer to stop. Once they were stopped they got down out of the hay covered trailer and started to walk. Adam didn’t take off. Instead, he walked in-between his father and Nikita. “I think we should go over that way… those look like Blue Spruce…”
“Blue Spruce?” Nikita questioned as she looked around. “They are trees.”
“Seriously? Did you not listen to me?” Adam questioned and Nikita blinked her eyes. She stopped walking and Adam turned which caused Michael to look at Nikita. “I’m sorry I ruined your day, Adam… And maybe I broke your rules… but I’m trying here and this is really hard for me.”
Michael stood there as he didn’t say anything. Adam deserved this and Michael wasn’t going to interrupt this interaction at all. Adam could read Nikita well enough and he was a wise boy. He knew that Nikita would have trouble with this and today he was just being unrelenting with his teenage angst that they were against his happiness.
“Nikita… I’m here to get a Christmas tree. Maybe we can just focus on that and not on you,” Adam snapped as he turned and started to walk. Nikita looked at Michael and shook her head. “You deal with him.”
“Kita…” Michael called out but she turned back to go towards the road where no one was right now. There were benches there and Nikita sat down.
Michael jogged in the snow to catch up to Adam. He grabbed his son and whirled him around. “That was inexcusable, Adam.”
“Please…”
“No,” Michael shouted as he leaned slightly down, realizing that Adam was growing again quickly. “Are you the same boy that made an Our Christmas for Nikita knowing that this Christmas was going to be hard for her?”
Adam tapped his foot and looked passed his father. “There is a nice White Pine over there.”
“Don’t change the subject,” Michael firmly warned as he shook his head as he stood up tall. “I’m not going to take this, Adam.”
“You are just letting everything go with the timeframe that Nikita wants,” Adam complained. “You should be looking for my half-sister… and instead it’s like Animal House or something like that with the two of you all over each other… and you don’t seem to care about what you want.”
“Adam, you are not the parent and you will not continue to talk to me, or Nikita, like this,” Michael spoke firmly. But Adam rolled his eyes and turned his body on his father. Michael was stunned with Adam’s blatantly disregard of what Michael had said. Adam thought he knew everything, but he didn’t.
Michael waited and then moved towards his son and dragged him down to the ground quickly. Adam started to struggle and Michael leaned on his son’s chest and pushed him into the snow. “Stay down, Adam.”
Adam was worried as he slowly started to nod his head. Michael leaned back on his heels and pushed his gloved hands through his hair. “Give us a break, Adam. I never thought I’d have Nikita back in my life… and I don’t think that Nikita thought that she would be in our lives… that in itself, is hard enough to process.”
Adam thought about rolling his eyes but he looked at his father and saw that he was ready to pounce on him if he did the thing that his father didn’t want to see. Adam just looked back at his father and waited, because he knew that there was more.
“Nikita isn’t going to tell you this… and I don’t want you mentioning it to her… but this about the time last year that she had to close down Section. Even though she did what she had to do… there is a lot of guilt on her conscious about that… and if I can help that not hurt so much by showing her love… and that is what I show Nikita when you think we are only have sex…. I will continue to show her that in whatever manner I see fit.”
Adam nodded his head as he leaned up some. “I’m sorry… it’s just different... having a woman… having your attention.”
“You used to say that you thought I was half dead,” Michael pointed out and Adam winced. “Yeah… you were… cut off… workaholic.”
“But you don’t like me this way?” Michael inquired and Adam sighed. “It’s different.”
“Life is always going to be different,” Michael shrugged his shoulders as he stood up and dusted the snow off of his pants. “You have to learn how to handle with things being different. I can’t teach you that.”
Adam sat there for a long time and then Michael reached his hand down. He helped his son up and looked back towards the road. “You blindsided her with asking questions about Christmas… it wasn’t fair to her.”
“I know,” Adam admitted as he hit the snow off of his body. “I’ll be better…”
“You’ll be a boy that you are,” Michael replied as he shook his head. “And I shouldn’t expect you to be anything more than a boy that isn’t quite a teenager.”
Adam stood by his father for a while. He had a feeling that this wasn’t all quite done. “Let me go get Nikita and we’ll find the tree.”
Michael nodded his head as he allowed Adam the opportunity to apologize to Nikita. He watched from a distance as Adam approached Nikita. Nikita simply lifted her hand and pointed across the road. Michael tilted his head as Adam sat down and spoke for some time. He hugged Nikita and then Nikita pointed again. Michael started to walk towards them as Adam got on top of the bench and then jumped down. “Dad… Nikita has found the perfect tree… while sitting here…”
Michael walked up to Nikita as she stood up. She smiled and pointed. “Do you see it… its right over there?”
Michael saw the tree and it was like it was lit up by some sort of special glow. Michael took Nikita’s hand and she looked at him as Adam ran ahead. “Everything ok, Michael?”
“Had to be a father for a bit,” Michael replied as he turned and stopped to face Nikita. “This has been hard for you today.”
“I don’t really like long drives,” Nikita spoke as she looked at Michael and touched his face. “I’m getting better, Michael.”
“You are part of our family, Kita. I don’t want you to think that it is me and Adam first… we have to be a unit… the three of us together,” Michael spoke but Nikita turned her head to the side. “I forgot the saw… let me go get it so you and Adam can cut the tree.”
Michael watched as Nikita jogged back to the bench. He felt like he had just taken steps backwards with Nikita.
