Nikita pulled out some more ornaments from the store that they had stopped in after they had selected the tree. It had been Nikita’s suggestion that they get new ornaments and decorations to make the tree all of theirs and not just Michael’s and Adam’s. They even took the tree home before returning to the store as they didn’t want to risk anything happening to the perfect tree.
Nikita looked at the tree and smiled as she inhaled the pine scent. Something seemed some comfortable with the tree in the house, with it not even decorated without a single decoration.
But they had plenty of decorations.
Michael and Adam had gone in separate directions in the store at different times. Nikita was sure that they may have been running to get Christmas gifts or something along those lines, but she gleefully went down the aisle with all of the animated animals that sang Christmas carols. She was so intrigued by the donkey that sang an odd carol named “Dominique the Donkey” that she had to buy it. That was the first thing that she put up, right in the middle of the mantel.
“What’s that?” Adam asked as he walked into the living room having changed from the heavier clothing he had been complaining about being too warm in the car. Nikita looked at the mantel and smiled. “My donkey.”
“The nativity set goes there,” Adam blinked as Michael walked into the room and tilted his head to the side. “That’s different.”
“A nativity? We didn’t have one up there for Our Christmas,” Nikita responded and Michael ruffled Adam’s hair. “Some change is good, right Adam?”
“Ah… sure,” Adam tentatively nodded his head. He looked around the room and pointed to a shelf. “The nativity can go on the shelf.”
Nikita looked and wasn’t sure why they would change things on the shelf, but she was happy that her donkey was on the top of the mantel. “Sure.”
“Come on… let’s start with the tinsel…” Michael changed the topic quickly as he reached into the fluffy bag and laughed. “I think we got enough.”
“Adam wanted this multi-color thick tinsel,” Nikita spoke as she took the tinsel out of Michael’s hand and then took the next kind out of the bag. “You liked this silver and white snowflake type…”
“It will be shiny,” Michael chuckled and then Nikita went into another bag and pulled out a beaded garland. “And I liked this gold and pink flower beaded garland.”
“We can’t put that all up,” Adam protested and Michael shrugged his shoulders. “We haven’t done that before… but this year we will.”
“We also have icicles,” Adam pointed out as Michael started with the thickest garland first, which was Adam’s selection. He walked behind the tree and Nikita started to hand him the garland. Nikita laughed at how Michael just disappeared behind the tree and for some amount of time, they all worked on the tinsel.
“I’m glad we already put the lights on,” Michael commented as he bent down and turned the lights on, both clear and colored. Michael stepped back and had to admit that they probably didn’t need to put any ornaments on at all, but Nikita was soon into the bags. “I have some ornaments… they were cute…”
Nikita pulled out ornaments that featured mice in caroling outfits. Adam looked at his father and rolled his eyes. “I got those crystal ones, Nikita…. Didn’t you like them?”
“I like them all,” Nikita announced as she reached into the bag and delighted with the colorful stars that Michael had selected. Then Nikita felt the need to get all of the ornaments out that ran the gambit from glass to plastic and everything in between. She pulled out hooks and started to pass them along. “Let’s get started… lots to get on.”
“We don’t have to put them all up,” Adam pointed out as he ignored his father’s shaking head. But Nikita did not seem to hear Adam’s protest. She started to hum a song, the Twist actually, and putting up ornaments. She stepped back and walked to the bags. “I got a tree skirt too…”
Nikita opened up this white snow skirt that had lights in it and got underneath the tree to arrange it as Michael and Adam continued to put ornaments up. Nikita stepped back and rubbed her hands together. “Looks good…”
“I have one more…” Adam spoke as he walked to the side of the couch and pulled it out. “I think you should look at it, Nikita.”
“I’m going to go make some hot chocolate… and afterwards we can play a game to figure out who is going to put the tree topper on…” Michael spoke and Nikita laughed. “Did you see the one I found? It was an LED one that changes colors…”
Michael walked out of the room and peaked back in to see Adam handing Nikita the tiny box. Michael knew what it was but it had been Adam’s idea.
Nikita pulled the lid off and saw the metal ornament that was engraved. It had a banner that said “Our Family” and then all of their names appeared underneath the fireplace. Nikita sat down on the coffee table as she held it. “You like it, right?”
“Yes,” Nikita rasped as she nodded her head. “I wasn’t sure if we were… a family…”
“Families have fights,” Adam stated as he stood by Nikita. He sighed. He hadn’t apologized when he went to Nikita at the tree farm. He should have, but he didn’t. “I didn’t mean to snap at you earlier… I just said stupid things.”
Nikita reached for Adam and hugged him. “I needed to hear that… because… I guess I wasn’t sure… if I’d be a part… ever… I still feel separate, Adam… I know that you and your father have a great relationship and I worry that I’m making things worse…maybe you act out… and ruining your father-son relationship… and I don’t want to make that happen.”
Adam stepped back and swallowed hard. “I have to admit… it’s hard seeing him with you sometimes. But I see him smile more now than I ever remember seeing.”
Adam took the ornament out and handed it to Nikita. “There is a spot left towards the top.”
Nikita hung the ornament up and she exhaled as she again hugged Adam. “You know… you are very smart… a lot like your father… But you have to learn some things.”
“Like?” Adam questioned as he was wondering what Nikita was thinking about right now.
“Tact,” Nikita announced as she nodded her head up and down. Adam looked at her quizzically and Nikita shoved her hands into her pockets. “You may know what is going on and you may guess from our body language what has happened… but it doesn’t mean you have to point it out to us.”
“You mean…” Adam caught on and Nikita nodded her head. “We are trying to respect what you want, Adam… but we both were away from each other for years. It doesn’t excuse it, but we are trying not to be blatant about it… and I do know how it feels to have a mother who would just… well, let’s say I was exposed to a lot when I was young. We aren’t doing that to you… so you should respect behind those doors is a subject that is just between me and your dad.”
Adam nodded his head as Michael came into the living room. “Hot chocolate for all.”
“Did you make it your way?” Adam asked as he licked his lips. Michael nodded his head and Adam clapped his hands. “It’s been a long time.”
“It’s hot chocolate,” Nikita stated and Adam shook his head. “When my dad really wants to make it… he puts marshmallow fluff in it.”
“Fluff?”
“Try it,” Adam spoke as he took a mug off of the tray and handed it to Nikita. Nikita looked at the white mushy goop on the top and then took a tentative sip as Michael put the tray down. Nikita felt the sugary taste dance on her taste buds and she then felt the white marshmallow fluff coat the outside of her lips.
“I’ll clean it off for you,” Michael stepped over and kissed the white line off. Adam groaned and shook his head. “Don’t say a word, Adam…” Michael spoke.
“I won’t,” Adam lifted his hands. “But I’ll remember this… for when I have a girlfriend… just remember that dad…”
