Nikita hummed no particular tune as Michael came downstairs after chasing Adam upstairs well after the Late Show started. He had hoped that Nikita would follow him upstairs, but now after getting Adam to bed, he was downstairs to try to get Nikita to come to bed. “Kita? Why didn’t you come up?”
“I was working on a shopping list for the morning,” Nikita announced as she showed the papers at the table. “I was just combining things because I had them listed several times.”
“Shopping?” Michael inquired and Nikita nodded her head up and down. “Walter said that the stores aren’t as bad in the morning on Sundays because people are at church. I need things to bake.”
“You are going to bake?” Michael asked as he sat down catty-corner from Nikita. She nodded her head and pulled a large book off of her lap and placed it on the table. There were all kinds of tabs sticking out of it and Michael swallowed. “Didn’t you see me buy this book earlier? It’s amazing.”
“What are you all going to bake?” Michael questioned as he started to have visions of the kitchen becoming completely destroyed.
“Oh…. Look,” Nikita declared as she opened up the book. “I thought that I could make the Gingerbread cookies first with Adam tomorrow… and you too of course. You two can decorate...”
Michael blinked as Nikita flipped the pages again and smiled even brighter. “Then I saw these Rum Balls… I mean, I know that they have alcohol in them… but the recipe says that the alcohol stays in them so I decided not to make them.”
Nikita was rambling and Michael held back his comments as Nikita flipped to another set of pages. “So I saw these thumbprint cookies are a lot like the peanut butter blossoms…. So those can be almost done together…”
“That sounds like a lot,” Michael commented and Nikita laughed. “It’s Christmas! There are to be lots of cookies… Look at what else I found…”
Michael saw the picture of the next one and chuckled. “Peppermint Whoopie Pies?”
“Don’t they look yummy?” Nikita nodded her head as she continued to move her hands. “And of course I have to get some of these Chocolate Crinkles, S’more Granola Bars, Coconut Macaroons, Nanaimo Bars, and Mincemeat Bars…”
“That’s a lot to make, Nikita,” Michael commented and Nikita laughed. “I’m not making multiple batches of all of them. And I can freeze some.”
Michael forced out a smile. “Of course… so make sure that you get some containers,” Michael stated and Nikita laughed. “I have more that I’m making, Michael.”
“There are Cranberry White Chocolate Shortbreads, Chocolate Mint Fudge Squares, Speculaas, and several kinds of Biscotti,” Nikita declared as she pulled out her paper and pointed. “I’m going to make Cappuccino, Cranberry Pistachio, Almond Chocolate, and Chocolate Hazelnut.”
“Where are these all going to go? That’s a lot!”
“Davenport lives here and Walter is here a lot. We won’t have too many,” Nikita countered and Michael pulled out the newspaper. Nikita looked at him. “Did I miss a recipe that you want?”
“No,” Michael shook his head and Nikita frowned. “I missed something.”
Michael looked at Nikita. “Let me take care of the Lemon Madeleines, Kita,” Michael declared and she nodded her head. “I’d love to bake them with you.”
Michael continued to look at the paper and Nikita frowned. “I already got coupons. What are you looking for?”
“A sale on a freezer… because your cookies will take up every space in the freezer right now…”
Nikita’s face dropped. “Do you want me to cut some out? I mean… I guess I can narrow down some…” Nikita rubbed her forehead. “But I also wanted to make the cereal treat cookies that Adam said that he loves… and they make that rice cereal in Christmas colors… and he wanted to make M&M cookies too.”
Michael could see the disappointment in Nikita’s face and shook his head. “You go shopping. I’ll buy the freezer.”
