“You know that no one wants to tell you that this is freaking them out,” Ellie stated as she sipped some tea that Nikita had prepared when she arrived at the house to check on Nikita. Nikita turned and shook her head. “I wish they wouldn’t just talk about things behind my back and think that I don’t know about it.”

“So you knew this?” Ellie inquired and Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “I could tell.”

“Then why continue?” Ellie asked as she tilted her head to the side. Nikita rolled her eyes and then turned to face Ellie. “Stand up.”

“What?”

“You are judging what I’m doing without doing it… Stand up. You are going to help me,” Nikita announced as she turned and grabbed a bag of sugar. “You need to measure out three cups of sugar.”

“I don’t know how to bake!”

“I didn’t either,” Nikita replied as she went to the cupboard and pulled out chocolate chips and flour. Ellie stood up and shook her head. “You are hiding something, Nikita.”

“I’m trying to get through a lot of things in my head… and I do like to have time when I don’t think about it. Right now, I get that when I’m baking. It won’t last forever,” Nikita explained as she placed the ingredients down on the counter. “Three cups.”

“I didn’t come here to bake.”

“You should have thought about that before you came over here to check on me. I need help with baking and that’s what you are going to do,” Nikita declared and Ellie walked to the counter. “This doesn’t mean that I don’t find all of this odd.”

“I don’t care,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders as she pushed the bowl over and looked at Ellie. “Three cups, please.”

Ellie started to measure the sugar and she watched as Nikita explained the recipe and what she thought that they were going to look like when they were done. Nikita talked about how she got excited while she waited at the table for the cookies to finish and how it was always a surprise.

The two chatted about plans for Christmas Dinner, which Ellie was surprised to hear that Nikita was not planning to cook most of that Michael was going to do most of the cooking. Ellie had assumed that it was going to be Nikita doing most of it because of the baking.

Ellie laughed as Nikita pulled off one of the first cookies and instead of putting it on the cooling rack, handed it to her. “Don’t tell anyone that I’m letting you have the first cookie in this batch…”

“You haven’t made these before?” Ellie questioned and Nikita shook her head as she looked at the cookie in Ellie’s hand. “Try it?”

Ellie took a bite and smiled as she nodded her head. “These are good.”

“And you helped,” Nikita stated as she pulled another cookie up and tried it. Nikita licked her lips and smiled. “I got to keep these away from Adam…”

The door opened and Nikita walked to the doorway. “Michael?”

Michael stood there and he tilted his head to the side. Nikita turned to look at Ellie. “Ah… I think I’m done baking.”

“Why?” Ellie questioned as she walked to Nikita. She smiled. “Hi, Michael. Nikita let me help bake.”

Michael stood there and Ellie looked at Nikita whose body language had become more rigid. Ellie looked back and forth. “What’s going on?”

“Ellie, I think it is best that you leave,” Nikita spoke as she looked at Michael and didn’t even look towards Ellie.

Ellie exhaled again and looked at Michael. “What’s going on?”

“I concur with Nikita,” Michael jerked his head slightly to focus on Ellie. “It is best that you leave now.”

Ellie turned to look at Nikita. “I was wrong about the baking… I can see what it is giving you right now.”

“This isn’t about the baking,” Nikita commented and Ellie realized that right now Nikita saw something in Michael that was telling her something that Ellie didn’t understand. Ellie rolled her shoulders back. “If you ever need to talk…”

“I know where you are,” Nikita finished as she didn’t even look at Ellie. Ellie picked up her coat and her purse. She walked down the hallway where Michael just barely moved to the side. Ellie stopped. “It’s the holidays, Michael.”

“Have a good evening, Ellie,” Michael responded as he turned to look at Nikita. Ellie wasn’t sure what was going on but she knew one fact: It wasn’t good.
