Nikita walked with Rhoda as they walked from the restaurant where they had lunch to the bridal store. Nikita could see how happy Rhoda was and she was happy for her. Yet Rhoda didn’t know how difficult it had been for Nikita to agree to come shopping with her. Nikita had suggested that maybe she was better off with her friend Ze-Ze, but Rhoda said that she wanted a real wedding dress and not a home-crafted dress. Nikita was almost sure that Rhoda was afraid that Ze-Ze would make the dress too sexy.

“I hope that we have no problems… I have heard horror stories about brides trying to get dresses on short notice… and this is really short notice,” Rhoda explained and Nikita laughed. “You are going to find the right dress, Rhoda. I just know it.”

“I hope so,” Rhoda spoke as she rubbed her hands together. “But I don’t want to spend a lot… and I have a budget… like $500… I mean it.”

Nikita nodded her head up and down, but Nikita wasn’t going to listen to Rhoda. She had done a lot for Nikita and Nikita wasn’t going to let the perfect dress pass Rhoda by because it was beyond what she thought her budget was.

“Maybe we should have just gone to the mall… I told you that I saw a white dress at Macy’s…. it had snowflakes on it… but it was white,” Rhoda stopped as she saw the door of the store. Nikita pushed at Rhoda’s shoulders. “You are getting a wedding dress… not a Christmas dress.”

Finally they were at the door and Nikita opened it up. Rhoda walked in first and then Nikita. The girl standing at the desk smiled and stepped around the desk, looking at Nikita. “You must be Rhoda…”

Turning to Rhoda, the girl took Rhoda’s hand. “And you must be the mother of the bride.”

“Ah… my name is Nikita,” Nikita spoke as she looked around the room and all the wedding dresses. Her stomach churned and Nikita tried to put mental blinkers on in her mind. “And this is Rhoda.”

“Oh… I’m sorry!” The girl declared as she blushed brightly. “Our head sales woman, Nancy, is going to assist you… I’ll go get her… she was just finishing up with another appointment…”

“See,” Rhoda turned around and looked at Nikita. “This isn’t right… this is crazy!”

“You are going to get a real wedding dress, Rhoda,” Nikita declared as she rubbed her friend’s shoulders again. Nikita turned her around the store. “Look at all the possibilities.”

Nikita focused on the fact that they were looking for Rhoda. A white dress, a wedding dress, was not in her future. It was Rhoda’s dream that they were here for and that made it easier for Nikita to stand there in this store.

Nikita walked with Rhoda as she made comments about the dresses were too young for her and Nikita touched the delicate materials as they walked. Rhoda abruptly stopped and looked at Nikita. “This place has dresses for you… not for me.”

“Darling, you can wear whatever you want to wear on your wedding day,” an older woman with vivid gray hair spoke as she walked over. Nikita knew that this must be Nancy and Nikita nodded her head in agreement. “Whatever you want Rhoda. A wedding dress is timeless and ageless.”

“A girl who is after my own heart. Maybe you need a job?” Nancy questioned as she placed her hand up towards her neck. She extended her hand and smiled at Rhoda. “My name is Nancy… and I’m here to help you find your dream wedding dress.”

“Rhoda,” Rhoda stammered as Nikita stepped back, giving Rhoda the space that she needed with this expert. “And I’m not looking for a dream dress… I just need a dress for a New Year’s Eve wedding…”

“This year?” Nancy questioned without looking a bit surprised.

“Ah… yeah…” Rhoda nodded her head up and down. “I know that it is short notice… so if you can’t…”

“We can handle anything,” Nancy replied as she patted Rhoda’s hand. “Now… what kind of style…”

“Under $500,” Rhoda replied and Nancy chuckled. “That isn’t a style. That’s a budget.”

“I’ll wear any style for that budget,” Rhoda replied and Nancy laughed again. “Oh… you are going to be a spitfire my darling…”

Nancy started to walk around with Rhoda and watched what she looked at but didn’t dare touch. Nikita followed around and pulled up a dress. “This is pretty Rhoda…”

“With that neckline!” Rhoda explained as she shook her head. “I’m… I’m… no.”

“I’m sure that they can help cover up the neckline…” Nikita tried and Rhoda turned away and Nancy shrugged her shoulders. Nikita touched Nancy’s arm and looked at her. “I’m paying for her dress… please don’t let her look at the price tags.”

“She is going to know.”

“I don’t care,” Nikita replied as she smiled at Nancy.

“Look,” Rhoda spoke as she pulled out a dress that had very long sleeves and a neckline that looked more like a pre-school child than a bridge. “This is along the lines.”

“It gives me a starting point,” Nancy replied as she winked at Nikita as she saw the horror on Nikita’s face. Rhoda wasn’t old and she was getting married. She didn’t need to still look like a nun. But Nikita was almost sure that Nancy was her key to making that point.

In a few minutes, Nikita was ushered to a large white couch to wait for Rhoda to try on a few dresses that Nancy had pulled for her. After sitting down and looking at a wedding magazine, Nikita closed her eyes to push her thoughts away. The door opened and Nancy walked out with Rhoda.

But Rhoda was not happy.

“It looks…” Nikita sputtered and shook her head. “You might as well be wearing a suit. You are more covered up now than when you were a nun, Rhoda!”

Rhoda nodded her head up and down. “I know… I’m trying… but it is in the price range… and I don’t care how I look when I marry Nat… I just want to marry him.”

“I think he might care how you look,” Nikita shook her head at Nancy. “There are other options, right?”

“Dress one of four that I pulled to start with. I thought to get the most modest on her to prove that she doesn’t want to be that,” Nancy announced and Nikita nodded her head as Rhoda turned back to the dressing room. Nikita looked to her side and saw a dress. It reminded her a lot of the dress that she wore when she was marrying Helmut for the mission. Nikita pushed those thoughts away and stood up.

Winding her way not far, Nikita came across a dress that was modest but yet sweet. It had layers of delicate lace but it wasn’t making the dress look wider. It had a scoop neck and sleeves that just covered the shoulders. There was a bow just below the breast line and it was sweet.

It was Rhoda.

Nikita then saw that it was a gown that was labeled as an eternity gown. That had to be the dress for Rhoda. Nikita pulled it off of the rack and then carried it with her as Rhoda came out again, this time, still covered with too much unflattering lace. Nikita pushed the dress towards Nancy. “Try this one.”

“Nikita… I can’t afford a dress like that…”

“Try it on,” Nikita spoke as she smiled at Rhoda.

And it was perfect.

Rhoda was grinning as she was walking down to Nikita. But she sighed as she stood up on the platform. “But Nikita… I just can’t…”

“I’m buying your dress,” Nikita announced and the tears started to come out of Rhoda’s eyes. “You can’t… you are going to be buying your own dress sometime soon… and I can’t.”

“I’m not meant to get married, Rhoda,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “You know that it won’t be a wedding for me that matters… but this is for you… and you look stunning… and you look like you are my younger sister in that dress.”

“You weren’t sisters?” Nancy inquired with a grin. Nikita looked at Rhoda and it was clear that Rhoda realized that Nikita meant what she had said. Nikita smiled again. “It fits you perfectly. It doesn’t even need fitted, Rhoda. It means that it was meant to be.”

Rhoda nodded her head and Nikita sat down on the couch to wait. It was as Rhoda was coming out of the room that the previous sales girl came over to talk to Rhoda about shoes and other accessories. Nikita stayed there as Nancy came to the side of the couch. “Call me when you are ready for your own dress.”

“I won’t be calling,” Nikita whispered and Nancy gently smiled. “You’ll be wrong.”
