Michael pulled at the tape and finished pushing it on the box as there was a knock on the door. He turned and twisted the knob to unlock the door. He had almost expected Nikita but instead he saw Adam standing there. “Hey…”

“Wrapping a gift for Nikita?” Adam inquired and Michael nodded his head as he picked it up and showed it to Adam before slipping it underneath the bed. Adam rolled his eyes. “You could put it in the spare room. She wouldn’t notice an addition there.”

“Adam,” Michael spoke and firmly and his son lifted his hands in the air in surrender. “I didn’t mean it to come out that meanly.”

“It was.”

“Sorry,” Adam sighed as he looked over his shoulder and shut the door. “Did you buy something else for Nikita?”

“I got her some things…” Michael drifted as he looked at Adam. “Not as much as I fear that she got me.”

“The ring?”

“That ring that I got back then was for a different Nikita. She won’t get that ring ever, Adam,” Michael explained gently as he knew that back when Adam found out that Michael had bought Nikita a ring, he thought the world of his father. Michael wasn’t proud of what he had felt the need to do, but it was all different now. That purchase had somehow given Adam hope that Michael wasn’t providing for his son right off the bat. They were both so different back at the beginning.

“Did you get a ring?” Adam asked and Michael shook his head. “No, Adam. I didn’t.”

“You should marry her,” Adam bluntly spoke and Michael sat down on his bed to study his son. “Where is this coming from?”

“Did you know that she went dress shopping for Rhoda today?” Adam questioned as he expected that Michael didn’t know this. Michael started to nod his head up and down. Nikita had explained to him how she was going to buy Rhoda the dress that she wasn’t going to buy. “Nikita told me that.”

“Well, you saw her at dinner. It made her sad…” Adam commented as he continued to stand there. He blinked his eyes and looked so impatient, a lot like Nikita used to look like while he was training her. Michael could never explain to Adam how much it confused him to see features of Nikita in him.

“It’s ok to be sad every now and then, Adam.”

“She doesn’t believe that she can marry you,” Adam pointed out as he folded his hands over his waist and stared at his father, wanting him to react.

But this wasn’t a surprise to Michael.

“It’s too soon, Adam.”

“Oh no,” Adam swung his head from side to side. “I don’t care if you two can have fake identifications made… you need to get married.”

Michael watched and Adam huffed. “You are living in sin!”

“Adam,” Michael gently spoke and Adam frowned. “Come on, Dad…. You know that a part of her wants to marry you… and I think another part of her might run if you find my half-sister and she thinks she is better off with us because she isn’t the mother type.”

Michael stood up and rubbed at Adam’s shoulders. “This isn’t your thing to worry about.”

“I don’t care,” Adam raised his eyes to look at Michael. “You both are my family. And I’m going to tell you when you are being blind.”

Michael pulled his hands away and calmly stood there while his mind wanted to shout at his son. Michael saw Adam squirm and he sighed. “I’m sorry about that.”

“Again, you should be,” Michael nodded his head up and down. Michael looked to the bed and Adam slumped as he sat down. “I just think I’m right… I think you should give her a ring now… so what if you don’t get married until next winter… but I think she needs something real.”

“She won’t say yes,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “I’ve mentioned it to Kita…”

“Mentioning it is different than getting down on one knee and asking,” Adam retorted as he swayed his head from side to side. Then he looked at his father and saw them turning dark again. “Come on, Dad… Walter could say the same thing to you and not get you all snitty.”

“Walter is my friend,” Michael pointed. “He is an adult… Not my son.”

Adam’s lower lip pushed out as he pouted and Michael was not going to change his mind on Adam’s attitude right now. “I know that it can be confusing for you, Adam.”

“I’m not confused,” Adam exclaimed as he got excited quickly with that statement. “It’s Nikita that is confused. I don’t want her to think that this can just disappear.”

“Adam,” Michael sighed as he rubbed the side of his face. “Nikita has had most of her life spent with people disappearing from it. She never really had permanent… ring or no ring… that feeling that she gets isn’t going to go away so easily.”

Adam folded his hands and looked at them in his lap.

“And not talking to me isn’t going to get me to change my mind,” Michael added. Adam stood up and went to the door. “You got her clothes.”

“Some,” Michael nodded his head up and down.

“Great,” Adam rolled his eyes as he slipped out of the room. Michael paused and thought about Adam’s quiet retreat. Then he got back onto his feet and walked right into Adam’s room to find Adam with the phone to his ear. “Put it down.”

“What?” Adam asked as he didn’t do as directed. Until he saw the look in his father’s eye indicate that he knew exactly what he was trying to do. “I just thought maybe an adult can help you.”

“Leave Walter and Jason out of this,” Michael warned and Adam shrugged his shoulders. Michael knew that it was worthless. Adam was going to try to get them on his side but Michael wasn’t sure who was going to get more frustrated. Either they were going to agree with Adam or the trio would push at Michael. Or Adam was going to get upset when the adults take Michael’s side.
