“Hi, Dad,” Adam answered the phone with a cheerful voice that made Michael’s heart twinge with guilt. His son was happy and he wanted to find a way to allow Adam to continue to be happy.

“Hey Adam,” Michael gently replied as he sat down on the stool that Nikita had been on just a bit earlier. “Is Walter there?”

“Right behind me… he knew that you would call the house phone if he didn’t pick up his cell phone,” Adam giggled slightly.

“And why would you two plan to do that?”

“Because you didn’t let me tell you something earlier when you called from the airport to say that you had landed safely,” Adam plainly complained and Michael couldn’t help but break a smile. Adam was speaking the truth. “I’m sorry about that.”

“Will you stop for a moment and listen to me, dad?” Adam interjected and Michael could see his son rolling his eyes in his mind. Michael remained silent to honor Adam’s request.

“You did a really good job raising me… and helping me through really rough times without my mother… I’m good now and I can take care of myself because you made that happen… you really took care of me. I think you showed how great you are and you need to know that I can take a couple days with Walter and without you around…” Adam started to rapidly ramble. Michael winced as he was going to break his honor to be quiet, because he really did need to talk to Walter.

“Is this leading to a point or are you trying to butter me up so I buy you an iPad?” Michael interrupted with a firm voice.

There was no moan from Adam which made Michael drop his hand from his head. “Dad, it’s ok to take some time and help Nikita. She needs to be taken care of right now. You were able to do that for me… and I know that you can help her now.”

Michael was touched by what Adam was doing. Although he shouldn’t have needed to hear Adam giving him permission like this, Michael knew that it did help to hear Adam say these words. “Ok, Adam.”

“Promise me,” Adam spoke firmly and Michael exhaled. “I promise.”

“Here is Walter,” Adam quickly replied and Michael counted to five as he waited for the phone to be switched over to Walter.

“Sorry about that, Michael.”

“It was needed for Adam.”

“And for you,” Walter wisely pointed out with a gentle voice. “How is it going?”

“I called you,” Michael reminded firmly. “And it isn’t good.”

“Meaning?”

“She saved the afterbirth, Walter. Nikita is right… I can extract the baby’s DNA from it. But the fact that she took care of herself in that way… and saved it…” Michael rushed out as he dropped his head and tried to rub the knots out of his neck. The stress was just hitting him all at once.

“What?” Walter questioned and Michael knew that he had to slow down. “After a baby is born… the mother has to pass the placenta… I guess that Nikita… somehow held off until you were on the way out with our daughter…”

There was silence and Michael tried to figure out what to say next. “She planned it, Walter.”

“A way to find her daughter later on,” Walter spoke with a bit of wonder in his voice. It showed that Nikita’s mind had been working well beyond the aspect of having the baby and protecting the baby. It meant that she had the forethought that she may want to find the baby in the future. “Can you actually get DNA?”

“Yes,” Michael replied. “But it’s not likely a six year old child will be in DNA databases.”

“You never know,” Walter spoke softly. Michael swallowed hard. Unfortunately, he did know lots of ways that six year old children did get into DNA databases. If his daughter was, he hoped that it was because her parents had done it as a protection in case something would ever happen to her. “Not to stop this conversation… but I was wondering if you have talked to Davenport.”

“I’ve been busy,” Michael commented as he thought back to the six messages from Davenport that he had promptly ignored once they had landed. Davenport had called once more since they had landed and Michael ignored that also.

“You should have called him back…. Because I don’t want to be the one telling you this…” Walter stated although he knew that he had to tell Michael. He didn’t even wait for Michael to ask what was going on. “Jason found a picture of Mick Schtoppel.”

“Where?”

“Flickr,” Walter responded, although he knew that was not what Michael meant. “Jason is trying to track down the location, Michael. But from the sounds of it, the picture was taken as a going away party for him… but he was with children.”

“So he may not have done as Nikita wished,” Michael thought out loud.

“I had Jason send me the picture… he was with a team of boys, Michael. That doesn’t sound like a man who has a daughter,” Walter pointed out quickly as he did not think for a moment that Mick kept the baby. Not with Nikita’s direct orders. Not with the way that he loved Nikita and Walter did not hesitate to believe that Mick did exactly as Nikita wished. “All that matters is that Jason is still looking and Davenport may have to go out on the land if he gets anything.”

“We need to talk to Mick,” Michael declared firmly.

“So…” Walter drawled out. “You didn’t just call me about the DNA.”

“I’m getting a picture of what happened at the end… with her guards,” Michael commented as he stood up and paced slightly. “Walter… I think she had to make sure that there could never be a trace of them.”

“There are lots of ways to do that,” Walter retorted and Michael sighed. “I found a knife.”

“A knife? So what?” Walter sounded so calm and gentle about it. Michael walked to the wall and leaned his head against it. “It was still bloody.”

“Where is she now?”

“Nikita told me something along the lines that the knife was amongst the tools she used... you know… to dispose of Ethan... “ Michael continued as he did not answer Walter’s question. But Walter was very nervous right now. “Michael… where is Nikita now?”

“I think this Ethan was the last guard… but I don’t understand why she didn’t kill both at the same time… she even said that he had suggested using acid… so that must mean that he helped her with her first guard… and she said that she had to respect his body.”

“Michael!” Walter commanded with a loud sharp voice. “Where is Nikita now?”

“She was going to take a shower and go to bed,” Michael responded. Walter got slightly sick. “How long ago?”

Michael glanced at his watch and then shook his head. “About fifty minutes ago… I’ve been looking in other things here but nothing seems odd… some of your prototypes of safely stored here.”

“Get off of this phone and go to Nikita now,” Walter commanded as he knew that Michael should have figured this out on his own.

“Walter… she was tired.”

“Come on, Michael… do you remember how you were after the first kill you did? All cold operatives are the same… I believe your first kill was with a knife too… right? What did you do?” Walter questioned firmly.

Michael swallowed hard as he didn’t like to think of that mission. “I felt like I couldn’t get the blood off of me… I washed up for a long time… for a couple days afterwards.”

“Didn’t Nikita do something like that too?” Walter pointed out as he couldn’t believe that Michael hadn’t hung up the phone yet.

“Several times I had to pull her – SHIT!”

Walter knew that Michael had dropped the phone. He was doing what he needed to do. Walter could only hope that Nikita wasn’t as bad as he worried that she was. But given that she was not herself at all, Walter feared that this was too much for Nikita. That knife was probably not meant to be found right now and it was a blow that Nikita probably couldn’t handle.

Walter called out Michael’s name a few times, but he didn’t hear anything more. He disconnected and then started to wait.
