Michael opened the door and instantly there were feet and a feeling that engulfed the house. He stepped to the side, allowing Nikita to enter the house that had been transformed into a warm Christmas wonderland. Decorations had transformed every inch of the house. Even the carpet runner on the wooden floor hallway had been switched from a light gray to a deep burgundy with green stitching.

“Merry Christmas, Nikita!” Adam called out as he jumped out from the living room with a red Santa hat on his head while he was wearing a green sweater that looked like it was just a bit too small. Nikita stepped back as Michael entered the house and closed the door. He saw Walter stepped out into the hallway and Michael shook his head slightly from side to side.

Michael did not think that this was a good idea.

“It’s not Christmas,” Nikita spoke as she stood there, shaking her head. “We haven’t even had Halloween yet, Adam.”

“Your right, it’s not the real Christmas, but it is Our Christmas,” Adam declared and Michael dropped his head with a groan. “Adam…”

“Come on, Dad… it’s a perfect time to have Our Christmas. We haven’t had one in years… and you always gave me this special Christmas when I needed to know how special I was and how much you loved me…. I wanted to give Nikita that also. So she can know how much we love her and care about her,” Adam exclaimed as he stepped forward and took Nikita’s hand. “Come on… come see the Christmas tree and I’ll tell you all about Our Christmas.”

“The boy had a good story to tell… and I could see that it really mattered to him,” Walter explained as he looked directly at Michael while Nikita was still looking at Adam and trying to figure out what was going on.

“A tree?” Nikita inquired and Adam nodded his head up and down. “And presents for you… and we’ll have dinner later. Can you smell the turkey and the ham cooking? Walter has been cooking all day!”

Nikita stepped forward more out of shock and wonder than because she understood what was going on. She felt her heart beating faster until she looked into the living room and saw what had to be a perfect Christmas card. There was a tree, a real tree no less, along with pine swags all over the mantel. She looked under the tree and looked at Adam. “I didn’t buy any gifts, Adam…. Those can’t be all for me.”

“Of course they are for you!” Adam exclaimed as he smiled brightly at Nikita. “My dad would be the only one buying me gifts on Our Christmas… but he always said that my gift back to him was him seeing me happy… So I hope that this makes you happy.”

“Adam…” Nikita whispered as she sat on the couch and touched the Christmas blanket that was there.

Michael had to admit, Adam had gone all out. He didn’t know how they managed to find a real tree at this time of year, but Michael would find out later. It was obvious that Walter had done a lot to make this happen. As Michael got out of the shock he began to hear things that he had told Adam about Our Christmas and realized that maybe it was something that Nikita needed.

“But it’s better than when it was just my dad buying me gifts…. Walter bought you some things. Davenport dropped something off. Jason said he emailed you a gift…. And I even found some gifts that my dad bought you each Christmas,” Adam gushed as he got down by the tree and pulled out a gift.

“What?” Michael inquired as he sat down next to Nikita.

“Don’t worry… Walter got you a gift too… and I may have gotten you a thing or two,” Adam winked to his father as he placed a box on Nikita’s lap. Michael touched the gift and narrowed his eyes at his son. “No, Adam… the other thing you said…. You found what?”

“Come on, Dad,” Adam rolled his eyes as he shook his head slightly. “Every year at some point… we’d be in a store… or a mall and you would drag me to something that was obviously for Nikita… I can’t say what any of those things are because then it will ruin the surprise for Nikita… but you never had anyone to buy them for and I knew that you hid them in your cupboard.”

“Adam…. Those weren’t for you to decide…”

“Michael,” Nikita spoke as she placed her hands on his hands. Then gently she moved Michael’s hands off of the gifts. “I’ve never really had a Christmas.”

“That’s why my dad said that Our Christmas was more important than the real Christmas… because we could have it whenever it was needed…. And because it was a holiday of our own making,” Adam added and Nikita touched Michael’s cheek. He took her hand and squeezed it. “Kita… those gifts…”

Nikita could see that Michael never intended for Nikita to get the gifts that were under the tree and with his name on them. It scared him to see what Nikita’s reaction would be. It was possible it could bring back a memory that she might not want to have right now. She also could see how much it meant to Adam to do this for her. He had been a trooper with everything that she had brought into this house and he deserved to be happy about doing this for her. “I used to buy you gifts too, Michael. Not for Christmas… but because they reminded me of you… I didn’t get to take any of them.”

“Kita, you don’t need to do this if this is too much,” Michael whispered as he took Nikita’s hand from his face and kissed it gently. Then he saw Nikita giggle. “Give up my own personal holiday that is all for me? I think this is better than my birthday because I don’t even turn older!”
