Nikita was a bit shell-shocked as she had been opening gifts pretty steadily. Of course there was a lot of conversation and she got to hear more about this concept of Our Christmas. Michael had started it during a time that Adam was struggling with the loss of his mother and Michael did not know what else to do. Someone may have advised Michael to not do something like that, but Michael had been by himself and couldn’t think of anything else.

It turned out to be the right thing for Adam.

And it was the right thing for Nikita.

Nikita turned the box over and looked at Adam. “You want to play Monopoly against me?”

“I know,” Adam rolled his eyes. “My dad said it could be dangerous to play against him… so he never wanted to play.”

“I’ve never played,” Nikita admitted as she looked at the pile of gifts she had already been through. There were a lot of clothes, some slippers, and some bath supplies. Walter had gotten her a leather jacket, although she wasn’t sure when she would ever wear it.

“I would think that Nikita is harder to play against,” Walter shook his head. “I tried to tell Adam how we used to play chess Sugar until you had to go and start playing Go.”

“Next gift!” Adam declared as he was done talking about this game. He would show Nikita all about the game after dinner and he would make Nikita forget all the boring strategy games that his father tried to get him to play but Adam refused to play.

The smaller rectangle box was placed on Nikita’s lap and it was wrapped in a simple silver paper. Michael saw that Adam had written the tag on it and he tensed up. “Ah, Adam… where did you find my gifts?”

“In your room… underneath your bed…”

“Underneath a floor board,” Walter chimed in as he stared at Michael. “Did you really have to hide it that much?”

“That box wasn’t underneath the bed,” Michael commented as he then looked underneath the tree, slightly afraid. Unless Adam changed boxes, he didn’t have much to fear about this first gift.

“Is this ok to open?” Nikita inquired as she was now nervous. She didn’t like that Michael was confused by what was going on. It was probably the one thing that Adam had done that was going over the lines of what was right and appropriate.

“I don’t regret anything that I bought for you,” Michael replied as he smiled at Nikita. “Open it.”

Nikita pulled at the paper and then saw a plain box. As Nikita opened the box and saw what was inside, she started to laugh. Finally she pulled out the red-rimmed dark sunglasses and leaned back against the couch with some more laughter. “Sunglasses?”

“I found them that first Christmas,” Michael answered as he looked at the metal and smiled. “I was all the way across the mall… I still don’t really like the malls… but it was just a couple months after… well, I was catching up… and I had walked passed them easily four times… I just had to buy them…”

“Even though you weren’t supposed to ever see me again?” Nikita questioned as she studied the glasses. She could see a hint of who she was in them, but it seemed to be odd behavior for Michael.

“I guess I never believed that I would never see you again,” Michael rasped as he shrugged his shoulders lightly. He never was a man of much faith, but for some reason, he had denied how much he had truly knew that he would see Nikita again.

“How could you even think that would happen? It should have never happened….” Nikita whispered as she placed the glasses back in the box. Michael took them out and placed them tenderly on Nikita’s face. “You had already made the impossible happen for me… I was out of Section and I had my son… if you could make those impossible things happen… it was within some sliver of possibility that I’d see you again… I had to believe that.”

Nikita was blinking back tears behind the sunglasses and Walter cleared his throat. “The next gift is mine… and I just bought it yesterday!”
