“Hey Rhoda… someone is here to see you,” Emily called out from the desk area of the clinic. Rhoda had just helped one of the doctors with a first time mother who had brought her daughter in for immunizations. It was hard on a mother to see that and Rhoda helped the mother more than the child who was probably one of the most behaved babies when it came to shots.

“If it’s Nat, he can go back to the lounge. I just want to get some samples for this patient…” Rhoda directed Emily, who was the front desk administrator of the very busy clinic. Emily pocked her head out of the door and shook her head. “Ah… it’s not your lover boy.”

Rhoda blinked her eyes and Emily laughed gently, knowing that Rhoda hated when she teased her about her friend, Nat. Emily knew what everyone else knew, Nat was more than a friend, but Rhoda still was trying to figure things out. Emily stepped out into the hallway. “Maybe you will want to use the free exam room for your friend… she looks really tired…”

Everything clicked in her mind, although Rhoda had never thought that it would happen. “Blonde female?”

“Yep,” Emily nodded her head up and down. Rhoda wasn’t sure if she was relieved or concerned. Michael had called her just as she woke up this morning to ask that if she saw Nikita to call him. Michael tried to leave it at that, but Rhoda worked out a story that told her that Nikita wasn’t in a really good place. To know that she had left Michael’s house in the very early morning hours and didn’t let Michael know where she was had been a bad sign. But Rhoda didn’t think that Nikita would come to the clinic.

“Do you remember those numbers I gave you this morning?” Rhoda inquired as she handed the chart over to Linda, who was another nurse at the clinic and pointed to the note that indicated the samples that were needed. Emily was nodded her head up and down. “Yeah… a Michael and a Dr. Hlad.”

“I need you to call both of them and tell that they should get here,” Rhoda spoke as she stood in the hallway and glanced out to the waiting room while still being slightly hidden. Nikita was in the back corner and Rhoda had seen her a lot better.

If it meant anything, Rhoda had also seen her worse.

“For her?” Emily asked and Rhoda nodded her head. Later she would tell Emily that part of the reason why the clinic had a sudden influx of money was because of Nikita, but that didn’t matter right now. “Dr. Hlad is an expert in PTSD and knows her.”

Emily nodded her head again and moved towards the phone. Rhoda cleared her throat and Emily stopped. She realized that Rhoda wanted to get the woman into the examination room first. Rhoda opened the door and Nikita’s head jerked right up. “Hi Nikita.”

Nikita rubbed her hand along her jaw as she looked kind of short and curled up within her body. “I needed to see you… I can’t go to the convent any longer…”

“Sister Camille wouldn’t have turned you away,” Rhoda spoke and Nikita looked up at Rhoda. That look told her that Sister Camille had turned Nikita away. “New rules for the sisters’ safety.”

Rhoda reached her hand out and helped Nikita up. “Come on… we’ll talk back here.”

“I just need to know somewhere that I can go for a bit… I’m just tired and I don’t want to crash in a hotel or something,” Nikita spoke even as she moved with Rhoda. Rhoda knew that Nikita didn’t want to go to a hotel. She could have easily left the area but she was here for a reason. She was here because Rhoda was someone who had helped her in the past and she would continue to help her. Rhoda opened up the door and watched as Nikita entered with pain written across her face. “Are you ok, Nikita?”

“Just some tired muscles…” Nikita answered as she was guided into the room and Nikita turned around. “I don’t know Rhoda… maybe I should just go to a hotel…”

“Michael called,” Rhoda spoke as she shut the door and leaned against the door. “You locked him in the lab?”

Nikita jerked as she turned her head away. It was as if Rhoda’s words had shot her. Rhoda stood there as Nikita put herself on the table and she then covered her face with her hands as the tears were silently rolling down her face. “Why, Nikita?”

“I couldn’t stay…” Nikita whispered as she hung her head and then groaned. Rhoda stepped away from the door and got closer to Nikita. “He loves you so much… everyone is worried.”

“I could sense..” Nikita shook her head slightly and swallowed hard. “I thought I could… but I had more and more… being close…”

Rhoda reached out to touch Nikita, but she pulled away and Rhoda stepped back for a second. She wanted to help Nikita’s thoughts right now but she was a nurse first. “Are you in pain, Nikita?”

Nikita glanced up at her and slowly nodded her head up and down.

“Cramping and spasms?” Rhoda inquired and Nikita nodded her head up and down. Rhoda sighed and moved to drawers, thankful that they stashed a lot of their supplies in here that they had nowhere else to go. That was why she had some heating pads there. “Not your legs this time?”

“Back,” Nikita rasped and Rhoda nodded her head as she moved to the table and put the pads onto it. “Come on… lay back… the heat will help.”

Nikita did as instructed and she looked up at Rhoda as the she stroked the blonde hair off of Nikita’s face. “There is some blood… that was from the birth of my daughter… in Michael’s lab now.”

Rhoda blinked her eyes as she couldn’t image that it was easy for Nikita to be near that. “Maybe he can move it somewhere else… it’s not a reason for you to leave.”

“I had to get away,” Nikita whispered as she looked at Rhoda. “I was doing well for a while… several days after starting the medicine… I didn’t have any memories…”

“Medicine?” Rhoda tilted her head to the side. Nikita nodded her head up and down. “An antidepressant… I guess it is supposed to help me process things… and at first it worked… but they came back so quickly… maybe I need more.”

Rhoda wasn’t sure that more medicine was the key right now. “Well, why don’t you rest here for a while… I can turn the lights off… you can sleep some.”

Nikita grabbed Rhoda’s hand and Rhoda sighed. Nikita didn’t want to be left alone.

“I’ll stay…. I’ll stay,” Rhoda whispered as she bent over and brushed Nikita’s hair off of her face again. Nikita turned her head away but she squeezed Rhoda’s hand. It was the sign that it was what Nikita needed.
