Stretching his arms over his head, Adam turned his head to where his iHome should be with the time and blinked when the bluish-green light was missing. He pushed his arms up as he remembered that it was Saturday morning and that the iHome had been taken out of his room. Just one small part of his punishment.

Adam almost fell back onto his pillows to sleep until his father got him up, punishing is father for taking his clock, when Adam stopped and saw Nikita standing inside of his room. He sat fully up and rubbed his eyes to be sure that he wasn’t dreaming. “Nikita… you are still here?”

Nikita nodded her head up and down slightly as she looked around the room and then back to Adam. “This is… home.”

“I didn’t mean…” Adam stammered as he shook his head. Last night he had been sure that Nikita had gone to bed in the guest room as a plot to leave the house and follow Davenport. Michael said that Nikita probably just needed to sleep, but Adam didn’t believe that one bit. “I mean… I thought…”

“I’m not going to London,” Nikita interrupted Adam’s stammering as she moved towards the bed and touched the bedspread. She smoothed it and then sat on the very edge. She opened her mouth and paused, stuck.

“I’m glad that you didn’t go,” Adam smiled as he was still shocked that Nikita didn’t go. He had placed something in front of Nikita’s door so that maybe it would slow her down, but Adam knew that she ran Section.

“I… I shouldn’t have said that about Fanning last night,” Nikita glanced at Adam and then looked towards the empty desk. She swallowed hard and Adam could see that it was a struggle for Nikita to say what she had. Adam pushed his blankets off of his body and moved closer to Nikita. “It’s ok…”

“You’re a child,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “And it was wrong what I said.”

“Nikita, my dad told me more about David Fanning last night,” Adam spoke as he shrugged his shoulders. He heard a lot about what his father thought about David Fanning and more details about what he had done to his wife Lisa and what he had done to Nikita after Michael had cleared out all of the electronics out of Adam’s bedroom as part of his punishment. “I get why you said that.”

Nikita sat still and then dropped her head to look at her hands as she pushed her fingers together. “Your father doesn’t always know everything, Adam.”

“But you were on that mission with him… he knows about what happened,” Adam pointed out and Nikita looked at the smaller version of Michael and swallowed pass the knot that was forming in her throat. Nikita told herself to calm down and to do this for Adam. He was a child and she had to put him first here. “Adam, he told you a story of the mission. It probably took twenty minutes… maybe more… but it wasn’t done quickly.”

“I know that it was a mission… but he told me about how Fanning beat you up the last time… and how you got away… he said you used a bullet in the chain…” Adam declared and Nikita pressed a hand out to stop Adam’s talking. She patted Adam’s hand and waited.

This was so scary for Nikita. But she had caused things last night to happen that shouldn’t have happened. Adam should have never heard that Nikita wanted to make sure that David Fanning was dead. That wasn’t something a child should ever hear, no matter how much they think they understand about Section.

“That last time… when David had me… You do know that it took a while for your father to get to Lisa, right?” Nikita inquired as she looked at Adam.

“He went to Birkoff…”

“Birkoff never got outside of Section very often. At the most it was once a week, Adam,” Nikita whispered as she could feel little fingers of thoughts that were going to plunge her deep into those memories again. She couldn’t allow that to happen. Nikita tilted her head and looked at Adam. “We were lucky… Birkoff got out of Section a couple days after… and then Michael had to find Lisa… and he got beat up…”

Adam nodded his head up and down. “My dad told me about Lisa’s bodyguards.”

“Adam,” Nikita spoke clearly. “I’m telling you that it was days until I was able to get loose… and days until your father could get Lisa to go along…”

Adam looked bewildered and Nikita squeezed his hands. “Your father doesn’t know everything that happened during that time to me.”

“That Fanning dude hurt you,” Adam declared and Nikita nodded her head. “But I was trained to handle the physical pain.”

Nikita shifted and sat back on the bed some in order to pull her legs up crossed-legged. She rolled her shoulders back and focused on the corner of the room. “Before I was brought into Section… I had seen my share of battered women… Roberta – my mom, she was a prime example of it. The men in her life did it to be dominate… and I thought that once I learned how to defend myself and once I was in Section, I wouldn’t have to see that again.”

Adam shifted and turned towards Nikita so she could continue. “But Section sometimes sanctioned battery of women if it got them what they wanted… that’s what happened to Lisa… and I had to allow it to happen to me so I could find the right time to get away from David… but the physical hurt was something I was expecting… practically from the moment that I saw David Fanning standing inside of Section.”

“So you weren’t hurt by the physical stuff?” Adam inquired and Nikita exhaled. “Oh… I hurt, but it was the things that David said about me. Your dad knows about how to taunted me like I was a dog… I told him that.”

“But you didn’t tell him other things?”

“He didn’t tell me much about what went on with Lisa,” Nikita pointed out as she rolled her shoulders back. Nikita cleared her throat. “He doesn’t know everything Adam and you can ask me things.”

“But you won’t tell me everything,” Adam stated as he knew that it was the truth. Nikita nodded her head up and down. “You are a child. You shouldn’t hear everything.”

“I want to kill that man, Nikita. It doesn’t bother me that you said it last night,” Adam firmly declared. Nikita grimaced and shook her head for a long time. Finally she stopped and turned towards Adam. She touched his cheek. He was a great boy.

“I shouldn’t have said that. I apologize for that. I also apologize for manipulating you to thinking that I was going to leave. I did that so you would tell your father about the test and I didn’t want to be the one that told him. I used your emotions to get you to react in a way that I desired. That was really wrong of me,” Nikita slowly spoke but her words were firm. Adam nodded his head as he looked around the room. “My dad said that I have to apologize to you too.”

“No,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. Nikita didn’t need to an apology from Adam. Adam jumped to his feet. “I can’t get anything back into my room until I apologize to you and to Davenport. I don’t know when Davenport might be back… so I am going to do this even if you don’t think you need to hear it.”

“So your dad took your computers and game… and even your iPod?” Nikita looked around the room as she really saw what she thought was missing.

“That’s not the bad part,” Adam cringed as he pulled out some clothes from the drawers, making sure that they were old. “Have you seen the shed in the back of the backyard?”

“Yeah… the wood is weathered… it looks like it has tools bursting all over the place,” Nikita nodded her head. Adam slapped his hands together. “I have to clean and paint it this weekend.”

“Oh, Adam,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “Not for what you did yesterday… I think it’s sort of funny that your dad and I even thought you were serious about Davenport having a crush on me.”

“Oh, that was what I had to apologize for and why I lost my iPod and iHome. The shed is my punishment for purposely failing a test… and doing it so badly,” Adam admitted as he pulled out jeans and turned to look at Nikita. “I can’t believe I actually wrote that the islands that Christopher Columbus was trying to discover were known as the Spice Girls.”

Nikita chuckled and smiled. “Yeah… that’s almost as bad as saying that the mouth of the Mississippi River was discovered by Dr. Drew.”

“Better than Dr. Phil,” Adam shrugged his shoulders. He looked outside and Nikita stood up. “You should have breakfast with your father first. He is downstairs.”

“Really?” Adam asked as he looked at Nikita. Finally he walked over to look at the watch on Nikita’s wrist and blinked that it was after ten. “Ah… how do you know that he is downstairs?”

“You booby trapped the guest room door last night,” Nikita pointed out as she rubbed her hands together and pulled at Adam’s bedspread to start making his bed. “But your father made sure that all of the outside indicator alarms were turned on to full volume, made sure that there were four men from the group that works with Davenport… and he slept outside the door.”

Adam sighed and shrugged his shoulders. “He doesn’t want you to leave.”

“I wasn’t,” Nikita spoke and Adam nodded his head. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Nikita for a second. He then pulled away and looked at Nikita. “How much haven’t you told my father about?”

Nikita licked her parched lips and pushed at Adam, not responding to his answer. She watched as Adam walked downstairs. He would be up to change shortly to work on the shed. She had been up making breakfast when Michael came downstairs and informed her that he had to run to the hardware store. He had returned with a lot of supplies that Nikita now knew where for Adam.

Nikita made Adam’s bed and sat back on the edge of it for a second, not sure if she had done any good at all. She had told Adam some, but she still didn’t tell him anything more.

”Hey Sugar, how are you feeling?” Walter asked as he caught up with Nikita as she was walking away from Section after being deemed healthy enough to protect herself by Medlab. Nikita stopped and looked at Walter. “Cleared.”

“Come on, Sugar… I know that there is what you are able to tell the powers that be… but you can tell me anything,” Walter wrapped his arm around Nikita. She pulled it off and continued to walk, trying to put distance between herself and Section. Walter then pulled to a halt and drew her to the same halt by holding onto her wrist. “Nikita?”

“Some things are best not talked about,” Nikita looked straight at Walter’s gentle face. She truly meant it. She wasn’t going to tell a soul about all of the details. Not for all the time that David Fanning at her.

“You have to tell someone,” Walter warned and Nikita removed her arm from Walter’s grasp to only fold it across her chest. “No reason too.”

“You have told Michael at least, right?”

Nikita blinked and Walter shook his head. “Come on, Sugar… he is one of the good ones… you know that.”

“I don’t know what I know,” Nikita stood there without moving her body at all. Walter eased closer to Nikita. “You can tell him anything. I think you have that kind of relationship, Nikita. I think you better because you don’t look right standing in front of me.”

“Then have them unclear me,” Nikita hitched her head to the side. “There is nothing to tell him.”

Walter shifted his weight from side to side, upset by Nikita’s words. “He is your trainer… he has put himself out on a limb a lot for you… and it might be ambiguous in there…”

Nikita watched were Walter pointed and cleared her throat so Walter dropped his hand. He touched Nikita’s nose. “You can trust him, Nikita.”

“I can’t,” Nikita shook her head from side to side as her throat grew tight. She knew that there was a glimmer of tears in her eyes. She curses that she couldn’t hide them from Walter.

“Why not?”

Nikita jerked her head to glance over her shoulder, although she could tell that they weren’t being watched. Then she looked back to Walter. “I don’t even trust myself.”

Nikita stood up from Adam’s bed and walked out of the room. She turned and quickly moved to the bathroom to pull that bottle out. She shook out that half pill of Ativan and placed it on her tongue. She had to get things right for Adam first.

Nikita sat on the edge of the tub while it dissolved. She didn’t feel any sort of deep calmness come over her body, but she felt a bit more able to breathe. Nikita knew that she could handle whatever she was going to face downstairs.
