Nikita placed the envelope down on the table near the front door and pushed her hands against her chest to will the thoughts away. She couldn’t even get to the bathroom if she couldn’t move away from that front door. Taking several deep breathes, Nikita gathered control enough to start moving down the hallway. Before she could start up the stairs, the house phone rang.

Nikita looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Adam’s school. “Hello?”

“Is Mr. Pomeroy in?” the woman asked on the other end.

“Ah, no. He isn’t in right now. Is this about Adam?” Nikita inquired as she thought back to how pale Adam looked when he was at the table this morning.

“Ah yes… your son…”

Nikita stood in front of the long dressing mirror to study her reflection. The pale dress was unlike anything that she ever wore in her life. The pink sash made her look prim and proper, probably what most little girls wish to look like when they grow up. Nikita gazed to see Helen standing there, admiring the image of Nikita and in love already with this person she believed Nikita to be.

“You like it?” Helen asked nervously as she wanted her daughter to like everything.

“I feel very different in these clothes,” Nikita replied as she was easily telling the truth. It was like the few times that Madeline had her try on various clothes. It just didn’t feel right to be dressed up like this. It wasn’t her at all.

“You are different. You have a mother now,” Helen gently smiled as she was so happy with her daughter. Nikita felt a pang inside of multiple reasons.

“Helen, you’re a very nice woman, but I’m just not able to…” Nikita shook her head gently. Helen looked hurt and sighed, “You can’t call me ‘mother’?”

“No,” Nikita apologized as she did not want to hurt this woman’s feelings over this. “Not yet. As I was trying to say, I’m not quite as ready for this as you are.”

“Ah… what did you say again?” Nikita stammered as she clutched onto the phone, still taken back by the fact that this woman thought that she was Adam’s mother. Yet Nikita couldn’t even correct that statement right now.

“I’m the nurse at the school and Adam has developed a fever and he is throwing up,” the woman repeated as if there was nothing unusual about Nikita needing something repeated. Nikita could see Adam looking pale in her mind and she swallowed hard. “And you need me to do?”

“Pick him up,” the nurse replied with a gentle chuckle. “He can’t stay here.”

“He looked pate this morning,” Nikita commented as she started to pace slightly from side to side.
Michael was walking towards the MedLab bed that she was trying to get comfortable in. Her entire body hurts and although Michael was the one that inflected the damage, she didn’t shout out at him for what he had done. Instead, Nikita tried to lift a hand to her face. It hurt to try and she finally dropped her hand while turning to look at Michael.

“I’m sorry it had to come to that,” Michael apologized as he looked down at Nikita. He was a hard man to read and Nikita wasn’t sure if he was really sorry about what he had done.

“Don’t be,” Nikita exhaled. “I’m getting used to how things are.”

Michael now looked sad. He looked like he regretted his actions but also knew that he could not have changed the situation in order to protect Nikita. It just was difficult for any trainer to do that to their material.

“Is Helen still alive?” Nikita asked as she didn’t want to have Michael looking at her in that way any longer.

“For now.”

“Does she know… that I’m not her daughter?” Nikita inquired as she wasn’t sure what she thought about that situation.

“We haven’t told her,” Michael answered.

With pain crossing her body, Nikita couldn’t help but open up in a way that Michael had tried to get her to do in the past while she was in training. “You know, my real mother would have let them keep beating me. She would have let me die.”

She couldn’t even stand to look at Michael once she had said the words. It was awful to admit to someone how little you meant to your own mother. She was shocked to feel Michael’s thumb gently tracing her brow in a way that brought no pain to her. “Get some rest.”

Nikita felt more alone as he moved towards the door. “Michael?”

She glanced at him as he stopped to look at her. “However long she’s got… let her believe.”

Nikita shook her head as she blinked back tears. “Ah… Yeah… I have to come get him… I should have known that he was sick…”

“The flu is going around the school right now. I’ve never had Adam in the nurse’s office before. The teachers all tell me that he is quite stubborn. I heard that he even fought with the teacher that found him sick in the bathroom. I guess he is supposed to take a test today,” the nurse reported as she was clearly impressed by Adam’s attitude.

Nikita winced as she realized that Adam was to make up the test that he had purposely failed because the teacher was being incredibly nice to Adam. Nikita rubbed her face as she stared up the stairs. She wouldn’t be able to take medicine until she retrieved Adam. It wouldn’t be safe to drive.

“I should have known…” Nikita hated the fact that she didn’t know that Adam was sick. Something was off but Nikita never thought that he was sick.

“Boys can be hard, Mrs. Pomeroy.”

The white door opened up as a petite raven haired woman stepped forward. She had a gentle smile on her face and goose bumps of fear trickled up and down Nikita’s spine. “Yes?” Elena spoke as she stood there with a young boy heading towards her.

“I’m looking for a friend of mine… I’m not sure this is the right address…” Nikita explained as she could swear that this was the address that she had successfully retrieved. She had taken a chance and double-checked her work and this was it.

“Who is it you’re looking for?” Elena inquired as the young boy came into focus. The hair was raven but there was something that struck Nikita to her core about the young boy.

“Mommy, come on. It’s your turn,” Adam commented as he lifted his eyes to look up at his mother with so much love.

“I’ll be right there, sweetheart,” Elena touched his head gently with that magical touch that told the child that she really meant it. For those seconds she had forgotten that Nikita was standing at the door. “I’m sorry. Who did you want?”

“No, I’m sorry. I have the wrong house. I’m sorry for bothering you,” Nikita replied as she almost wanted to run away. It was as if she knew exactly what was going to happen now. It was wrong and she couldn’t get out soon enough. Her body knew that it was going to kill part of her to see the truth in just a few seconds.

Adam turned towards the living room and jumped happily. “Daddy, can we go to the park now?”

“Later,” Michael’s familiar voice, yet on a softer tone, replied to his son. He had that same look that Elena had given Adam just seconds later. But he was not pulled entirely away as his green eyes just slightly looked at Nikita even while looking down to his son. “Let’s finish the game.”

“Michael,” Nikita spoke out loud and then she closed her mouth, wishing that she hadn’t said his name. If she could have just stayed quiet, she could have walked away. She could have somehow tried to tell herself that it was all a dream and that Michael didn’t have a wife and a child that clearly adored him.
Elena asked something to Michael and Nikita’s eyes darted from side to side. He adored them and he didn’t adore her. She was being targeted to be killed and Michael was playing house. But it was too late; she had to say something as she looked right at Michael. “Hello.”

Nikita had to get a hold of herself. She was almost sure that Elena was standing right in front of her. Elena would hate that Nikita had sent her son to school sick. “Ah… I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

“Just come to the main office. My office is right next door and we’ll get Adam home. He’ll probably need a few days at home with some tender loving care,” the nurse replied and hung up. Nikita stared at the phone and then placed it down overtop the envelope that she had brought in from her trip out.

That envelope was going to have to wait for now because Adam was sick. Michael was going to be so upset with her because she didn’t know that Adam was sick. She could have caused Adam to be sick. And Adam wasn’t going to be happy to know that the nurse thought that she was his mother. Nikita wondered if Adam was going to cause a scene because of that.

Nikita paused for a second to grab the keys to the car that was right outside the house. She stepped outside towards the car. She got in and took another break to get ready to drive again, especially since she really didn’t want to drive.

“What’s that?” Nikita inquired as she looked at the picture. She knew what it was but then she wasn’t sure if she ever had seen a real live one. Her mother never kept things like this about her life. “That’s me when I was a baby.”

Nikita nodded her head to Adam and reached for it slightly. “Oh, let me see. Yeah.”

Adam loved the attention and he pointed to another picture. “That’s me and daddy at Christmas.”

Nikita had been all alone on Christmas and now it made sense. She was captive with no life and while this wasn’t something that Michael claimed he wanted, he still had it. “That’s very sweet. Great picture. What’s this here?”

“That’s me!” Adam declared happily. Nikita smiled and nodded her head. “Happy birthday.”

“That’s me on my bike,” Adam spoke as Nikita tried to stop looking at details. “Was that your first bike?”

“Yeah,” Adam responded as he sounded slightly upset. Nikita knew things were going to change in his life and Nikita tried to keep Adam talking about something. But it was tearing her up inside to do this to a child – more specifically Michael’s child. “And, what’s this here with that big trophy?”

“That’s me at karate. I won the trophy and medal,” Adam responded as he pointed to the trophy and the medal.

“Did daddy teach you karate?” Nikita inquired as she could remember all the lessons with Michael. But Adam looked at her like she had grown another head. Clearly Michael didn’t let his son know a lot about himself. “No, I learned it all by myself at karate school.”

“That’s me, daddy and mommy,” Adam pointed to another picture and Nikita sighed. She couldn’t continue this. She couldn’t hear about daddy and mommy any longer. “Okay, come on. Bedtime.”

Nikita didn’t deserve to be back in Adam’s life. She couldn’t even get the simple things right. She started the car as she berated herself for not doing things prior to meeting Adam. If she had been brave enough to just end her life the first time Walter put a gun in her hands. If she would have just pulled the trigger on the assassination target they would have killed her. If she had just been able to end her pain before she got too tangled into thinking that there was a chance of having a life with Michael. But now she was on the road of ruining even more lives.

For now, Nikita had one mission. Retrieve Adam from school, get him home and get him better.
