Nikita pushed the door open and turned to watch Adam walk in. She wasn’t sure what to do next. He looked green now and she had to get her mind to think. She knew that she needed to get to her medicine and soon. “Go upstairs, Adam…”

“What’s wrong with you?” Adam asked as he looked at Nikita. Nikita closed the front door and pushed at Adam’s back. “Go… to your room and get into bed.”

“You were muttering in the car, Nikita,” Adam pointed out as he walked up the stairs. He felt awful, but now he was scared. He stopped at the door and licked his lips. “Can you call my father?”

“Get into your pajamas… and I’ll bring a can… a pan… a pail… so if you get sick you don’t have to…” Nikita spoke as she twisted her hands together, losing the fight completely.

”It is nice to have someone in the house while Michael is gone,” Elena spoke as she placed the tea down in front of Nikita. Nikita nodded her head gently. Elena smiled again. “But you have to talk more.”

“Talking wasn’t really encouraged in my life,” Nikita spoke and Elena patted Nikita’s hand. “That must run in Michael’s family. He is a man of very few words.”

“Must run in the family,” Nikita agreed as she took a sip of the tea and looked towards the baby monitor. “Tell me more about Adam.”

“Oh… he is a gem,” Elena glowed as she touched her hand to her chest. “He makes me know that I’m alive. I couldn’t imagine life without him now.”

“Michael loves him a lot,” Nikita struggle to speak and Elena nodded her head. “We’ve thought about having another child. Michael is just away so much… and after last year when Adam was sick…”

“Adam was sick?” Nikita inquired and Elena swallowed hard as she responded. “Yes… it wasn’t really anything that bad... ear infection that had him so miserable and he was having a bad reaction to the one medicine… and Michael was out of the country and he couldn’t get back.”

Nikita knew the time line and knew that it would have been about the time of their time in Lyons. Guilt washed over her. “When again?”

“Almost exactly a year ago,” Elena swirled her cup around and waved her hand gently. “He had some extra time when he came back… and then he broke his leg… so we had plenty of time to make up for the fact that he wasn’t here while Adam was sick.”

Nikita knew then exactly where Michael was when his son was sick. He never once had taken any phone calls and it burned her inside that for some reason she ranked more important in his life at that moment than his own sick son.

“It’s awful when your child is sick… you can’t really do anything to make them happy… and you just worry… You’ll figure that out when you have your own,” Elena stood up and Nikita shook her head. “I’m not going to have a child.”

“You’ll find the right man,” Elena grinned as she placed her tea cup into the sink and started to clean up as if it was just any other conversation she had just had.

Nikita heard Adam calling out to her, but she pushed the bathroom door and found that medicine. She found only one pill inside and she placed it on her tongue. She didn’t know what she was going to do when she needed more. She considered calling for a refill when she noticed that there were no refills available. She tossed the bottle against the tiled wall and sat down on the toilet.

She could only allow herself a moment or two. She had Adam who was sick and needed to get better. Michael would hate if she didn’t do the right thing for his son.

Nikita found the bucket in the bathroom and walked out into the hallway to see Adam standing there. “You are to be in bed.”

“My dad?” Adam inquired and Nikita pushed him into his room. “Into bed, Adam.”

“I think you need to call my dad,” Adam spoke as he got into the bed and under the covers. He swallowed hard and looked at Nikita. “You need him, Nikita.”

“I’m going to call a doctor,” Nikita informed Adam as she put the bucket on the floor. “You have this if you need to get sick.”

“Nikita…” Adam called out as Nikita walked out into the hallway. She moved into the bedroom and pulled up the phone. She dialed Michael’s cell phone but he didn’t pick up. She didn’t leave a message. Instead, she hung up and called Ellie.

“This is Dr. Hlad,” Ellie answered tentatively.

“It’s Nikita… and Adam is sick… he was sent home,” Nikita rattled out as she started to pace but then sat back down on the bed.

“It is probably just the flu, Nikita. That is going around pretty hard right now,” Ellie gently pointed out as she could tell that Nikita was nervous.

“No,” Nikita declared as she shook her head.

”Sugar, what if she gets sick?” Walter asked as he walked into the Perch. Nikita turned and glared at Walter. “What are you talking about?”

“You know who I am talking about,” Walter challenged Nikita with his clear eyes. He felt so guilty now doing what Nikita had asked him to do. “She could need you… and she’ll have no way to get in touch of you.”

“It would be too dangerous, Walter,” Nikita warned and Walter shook his head. “You would never forgive yourself if you have no way of helping her… what if she needs your blood? Or part of your kidney… or something that only you can give her?”

“Out,” Nikita pointed to the door as Walter stood there, shaking his head. “You have to think about this.”

“Don’t think that I don’t,” Nikita corrected Walter as she walked over to the door and pushed the button to open it. “Now leave.”

“How can you live with thinking about this? I don’t think you are living with it,” Walter challenged and Nikita swallowed hard. She waited until Walter left before she had to whisper it. “I haven’t lived in a long time."

“Nikita?” Ellie called out again as Nikita jerked her head. She gasped and felt the tears on her face. “He is Michael’s son, Ellie. He is sick. I want him looked at.”

“Ok,” Ellie relented quickly. Nikita stood up and looked out the window. “I have an opening this afternoon…. You can bring him by.”

“I can’t,” Nikita announced as she licked her lips. “I can’t drive.”

“Why can’t you drive?” Ellie inquired.

“I had to take the medicine,” Nikita bluntly answered as she rubbed her head. “It hasn’t been a good day.”

“You need to call Michael,” Ellie directed Nikita firmly.

“I tried,” Nikita rasped. “He didn’t pick up.”

”I am not available,” Michael’s voice spoke on his voicemail. Nikita pressed the button and then pressed redial. She had been calling several times for the past day, but now she needed him before she ended up dead. She could not believe he was not picking up – he always picked up.

“I am not available,” Michael’s voice spoke again the same way as it had easily twenty times previously.

“Nikita?” Ellie loudly spoke with some urgency.

“Yeah?” Nikita questioned.

“Are you having a PTSD flash right now?” Ellie questioned firmly.

“I wouldn’t be responding to you if I was having one,” Nikita fired back firmly. “Adam is sick. That is what matters.”

“Ok, Nikita,” Ellie said with a gentle voice. “I just have to talk to my nurse here and I’ll be right over.”

“Good… because Adam looked bad. I should have never let him go to school… I didn’t know that he was going to throw up…” Nikita rambled as she thought back to this morning, knowing that she had known that Adam was sick and she let him still go to school.

“Kids get sick real fast and they get better real fast. You couldn’t have known that he was going to get sicker. But I’ll be over there shortly. Maybe you want to sit down with Adam… and try calling Michael. He’d want to know that Adam is sick,” Ellie tried to calm down Nikita and to get her to do what she needed to do, which was to get in touch with Michael.

“He isn’t there, Ellie,” Nikita rasped as she felt a stab in her heart. “He isn’t here for me, Ellie. I wish he was.”

“Ok, Nikita…” Ellie replied again as she cleared her throat. “You can be fine without him… ok… so, what I want you to do is go sit with Adam.”

“I can be fine without him,” Nikita fired out as she tossed the phone away. She didn’t need Michael. She had done plenty of things without Michael before and now she would do it again.

“Nikita? Nikita? Nikita?” Ellie shouted through the phone, knowing quickly that she needed to get to that house because she wasn’t primarily concerned about Adam at all.
