Michael was beside the recliner after checking on Adam, who prompting told his father to go to Nikita’s side. Michael had asked Davenport to check in on him as he dragged a chair from the dining room so he could be right there beside Nikita.

Ellie was on the computer and talking to Jason to get access to some further files. He didn’t know if it really would matter. Nikita often didn’t just follow traditions. Michael was just grateful that Ellie was giving him some more time to try to reach Nikita. But he had to agree, this couldn’t continue.

He heard Nikita groan as he looked right at her as her face was facing him. He watched as Nikita opened her blue eyes and immediately sensed the hole that she was in right then. It was as her eyes focused on him that he felt dread because he could see the shame that crossed her face. He wanted to tell Nikita not to feel that way, but he waited as he grasped her good hand and squeezed.

“I’m…” Nikita spoke and her eyes closed for a second and then opened back up. The same emotional sweep occurred and Michael saw the shame cross her eyes and then he also saw guilt. He shook his head and gently tried to stop Nikita from talking with a small “Shh.”

Nikita closed her eyes for a brief reprieve and then she opened them to look at Michael, more determined this time. “I’m.. I’m…”

“Kita… you don’t need to talk right now…” Michael stated as he saw her shift and she realized the acute pain that was being driven from her shoulder. “You just need to rest right now.”

Nikita focused on Michael and slowly licked her lips. He stopped any talking and looked right back at her. “I’m… I’m sorry.”

Michael watched as one tear rolled down the outside of her cheek. Michael used his finger and dried it away as he paused for a moment. Nikita did not need to hear that it was ok. That was a useless thing to say right now. “Thank you, Kita.”

His words had been a surprise to her and it was clear that she had anticipated that Michael was going to tell her something else. He wasn’t going to patronize her right now. “I already knew that you were sorry.”

Again Nikita was surprised to hear the words that Michael said but it did seem to take some weight off of her. Nikita licked her lips and she winced as she shifted again. “I really… am…sorry.”

“Nikita, I know this,” Michael nodded his head up and down as he leaned closer. “But no matter what you do, I’m going to love you.”

Her eyes opened and she exhaled which seemed to take some of the pain away. When she looked back at Michael, she was ready to say a lot more. “I didn’t mean not to tell you… but it’s hard enough to remember back to those times… and to then have to talk it out… when I just want to forget… but there is so much there, Michael. There were hardly any good times… ever.”

Michael was worried about what to say to this, but Nikita was talking and that was important. He swallowed and wiped at some more of the tears that were coursing down Nikita’s face. He didn’t tell her not to cry because he knew that she had to do that also. He kissed her head and pulled away slightly. “But there were some good times.”

Nikita looked like she was almost ready to panic until she felt Michael squeeze her hand. She glanced to her hand and then to Michael. “Only with you.”

Michael nodded his head and slightly chewed on his lip as he thought about it. “But I also am in a lot of the bad things.”

Nikita nodded her head despite the extra pain she had with that movement. “I don’t know how to make it stop. I don’t want to live in the past but it isn’t allowing me not too.”

“Kita… I’m not going to leave you… so if this is all we can ever have in our lives, then we’ll find a way to handle it. I tried to live without you and I wasn’t living,” Michael explained as he needed to let Nikita know that he was not going to leave her. That was too common of a theme in her life and she needed to learn to let that go. She had a new life now and he was going to make sure to be there for her.

Nikita blinked her eyes and there was some disbelief there. Michael was sure that it was going to take a long time for Nikita to truly believe his words. That was all the fault of Section and how they manipulated him and Nikita to cause the trust issues that both had to be even worse. Michael just had more time to realize that he had to start trusting again. He watched as Nikita tried to readjust again and she felt the splitting pain. She looked to her shoulder and then back to Michael. “What happened?”

“You passed out,” Michael stroked the hair out of Nikita’s face as he looked up and saw Ellie standing there. “I believe you have a broken collar bone. We really should get you to a hospital so we can get it x-rayed.”

“No,” Nikita shook her head as she winced through the movement. “No… no hospital.”

“We need to confirm that it isn’t a shattered bone, Nikita,” Ellie explained and Nikita jerked her head from side to side. “No… I’ve had a broken collar bone before… Had to run missions with it… Give me a day.”

“You don’t need to run missions with a broken collar bone now. You aren’t inside of Section,” Ellie commented as she stood there. “I may be able to get you into a private center that has an x-ray machine. But I’d like to see films on it.”

“No,” Nikita replied firmly again as she turned to look back at Michael. “I just want to go to bed.”

Michael stroked at Nikita’s head and nodded his head slightly. “You probably could use a nap.”

The door opened loudly and Michael looked towards the hallway. “Michael? I saw your car out there…”

Walter appeared as then Michael remembered that Walter was going to meet him at the lab. “I forgot Walter…”

“I was right,” Walter declared as he moved into the room. “What happened?”

“Later,” Michael rasped and Walter jerked at the tone. He knew that Michael didn’t want to talk about it right now but that there was a story. “Hey Sugar.”

“Walter,” Nikita pushed out a smile. “I had an accident of sorts.”

“Ah…” Walter nodded his head although he knew a lot better. “I left my bag in the hallway… I brought down a book for you, Sugar.”

Walter walked out into the hallway and Michael leaned over Nikita. “You are going to get through this Nikita. You have too many people on your side.”

Nikita thought about it and cracked a smile. “Madeline would have a way to solve all of this.”

He didn’t expect Nikita to ever mention Madeline, but now that she had said it, Nikita did have a point. Madeline would probably relish having a challenge like this to figure out how to make things better. “She would be interested in it.”

“I’d be miserably mean to her,” Nikita gently joked and Michael nodded his head up and down. It was a good sign if Nikita could joke slightly like this.

Walter walked back into the room and lifted up the delivery envelope Nikita had left there when she had gone to get Adam. “What’s this?”
