Adam turned his head and blinked his eyes twice. “Nikita?”
Nikita nodded her head as she leaned forward from the chair that she was sitting on. “How are you feeling, Adam?”
“Better,” Adam spoke as he just registered that he was starting to feel better. He shifted and sat up some. “Yeah, I’m feeling better.”
“Me too,” Nikita smiled back as she leaned back in the chair and looked at Adam. She rubbed her hands up and down her legs, surprised with just how quickly her collar bone had healed. She had gotten home and slept for a good ten hours and then when she woke up, it was mended. But Nikita never wanted to go through that again in her life.
Nikita swallowed as she stared at Adam. “I know that you were worried about me… and I hate that you feel that you need to worry for me.”
“I worry for everyone,” Adam rolled his eyes. “It used to be more for my dad. But he is doing great now that you are around.”
“You are Michael’s son. You shouldn’t have to worry about us adults,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “And you were trying to point me in the right direction… to doing things other than trying to focus on what I have no control over.”
“What?” Adam shook his head as he was confused.
Nikita swallowed and rubbed her neck. “I know that you want to find your half-sister. I want to find her too. But I can’t let that be my entire life and my focus on that has probably caused a lot of what was going on.”
“I don’t think that’s…”
“Adam,” Nikita interrupted and he looked at Nikita. She smiled. “I won’t stop… but I have to do other things. So, I’m going to meet with Davenport’s photographer friend… try something new. Do more.”
“That’s what Dad made me do when he got me,” Adam commented and Nikita smiled. “I know. You’ve told me that plenty of times.”
“And maybe you’ll help me with my homework… I’m going to be behind,” Adam quipped and Nikita chuckled. “You must be feeling better.”
“I’m actually hungry,” Adam admitted and Nikita smiled as she pushed up from the chair. “I think I can get you something… a soft boiled egg and some toast.”
“I was hoping for a Subway Meatball sandwich with green peppers,” Adam declared even as he licked his lips. Nikita shook her head as she leaned over and rubbed Adam’s hair. “Just like your dad had last night.”
“Our favorite,” Adam nodded his head but Nikita shook her head from side to side negatively. “No Subway until we are sure that you are keeping food down.”
“Is Dr. Hlad still around?” Adam asked and Nikita tensed up slightly before exhaling. “Yeah… she is in the guest room sleeping. She was busy last night.”
“Is she going to be able to help you?” Adam asked and Nikita felt like she had been punched in the stomach. It was just wrong that Adam knew that.
“She fixed my arm,” Nikita tried to joke, but Adam tilted his head and blinked his eyes. He looked so much like Michael when he did that. Nikita pulled together her strength and exhaled. “She isn’t going to be able to just fix me, Adam. I have to play in role in it… and it’s hard because I had lots of practice of not letting people help me.”
“But I want to help!”
“It’s not that simple Adam,” Nikita sighed as she felt her throat get thick with emotion. Nikita cleared her throat and looked at the window before turning back to Adam. “I’m going to try really hard to let her help. It won’t be quick… and I’m sorry for that.”
Adam shrugged his shoulders. “Dad always said that if it is easy, it really isn’t worth it. So I guess this is going to be really worth it.”
