Whitney Huwe was nothing like Nikita expected. Nikita gazed at the terrain that was in front of her and held the camera up once more and took another picture.

“Come on Buffy…. Your time is up,” Whitney hollered out from the bench where she had pulled out a laptop. Nikita turned and walked over to Whitney, not sure what she felt about the whirl-a-wind that had happened and she wondered why Davenport hadn’t warned her more.

“Give me the memory card and we’ll see if you have anything on here…” Whitney extended her hand as Nikita sat down on the other end of the bench. Nikita handed over the memory car and thought back to when she had just met Whitney probably only an hour ago.

”You must be Mrs. Huwe,” Nikita smiled as she walked down the street of the small memorial park that she had agreed to meet Whitney Huwe at, although Nikita had thought she would meet at their house or a coffee shop to talk about what Nikita wanted to learn.

“Oh no… no formality with me… It’s Whitney,” the woman with long gray hair that was braided in a very elaborate pattern smiled. She was tiny but she had a large back with her. She sat it on the ground and looked up at Nikita. “I would call you Tia… but I had a student that I called Tia… so that isn’t going to work. Amazon is too strong for.”

“Tia? Amazon?” Nikita questioned and Whitney nodded her head. “I give all of my students or protégés nicknames. Didn’t your friend tell you what I call him?”

“Davenport? Ah… no,” Nikita shook her head and Whitney laughed. “I think he grew his hair because of me… because when I met him, he was a bald dome… so I call him Buddha.”

Nikita chuckled and blinked her eyes. Whitney took her hands and placed them on her hips. “Ah… You are strong… a warrior… but not like Zena. You were an accidental warrior…”

With a snap, Whitney stood up as tall as she could and clearly proud of herself. “Buffy.”

Nikita blinked her blue eyes and Whitney shook her head. “My mind is made up and you are Buffy. Some come along Buffy and we’ll see if you have any talent at all.”

“If I have talent?” Nikita questioned and Whitney turned around and looked at Nikita. Whitney sighed and shook her head. “Damn that Buddha. He told you nothing. I don’t teach. I see if the potential student has talent. Someone can like photography but not be any good at it. I can teach that person tips and pointers to take better photographs, but they will be snapshots and nothing more than that.”

“And if they are good?” Nikita questioned while Whitney picked up the bag and motioned for Nikita to walk with her. “If someone has talent, it will become art and they will begin to love things. What things do you love?”

Nikita’s heart raced for a moment and then she cleared her throat. “I don’t love things. I love people. Michael. Adam… my friends like Davenport and Walter. That’s what I love.”

“Oh, a philosopher too…” Whitney stated as she chuckled. “I hope you have some talent because it would be interesting.”

“And what was Davenport?” Nikita asked and Whitney stared at her before Nikita corrected herself. “What was Buddha?”

“Half and half,” Whitney shrugged her shoulders slightly. “But he had good business sense but he didn’t have the passion. If anything, I think he liked the camera to look at things far away…. Right?”

“Something like that,” Nikita nodded her head and Whitney stopped and placed her bag down. “Ok… so, get your camera out and start taking pictures. I want to see what you can do.”

“But I don’t know what to do with it,” Nikita looked at the camera that she held in her hands. Quickly, Whitney had it out of her hands and made a few adjustments before turning it back. “You had it fully charged which is nice for a change. I put it in standard mode for now. I want to see what you do on your own without me. And without people. People are hard to take pictures.”

“I want to take pictures of people. That’s what Adam wants me to do.”

“Your son?” Whitney asked and Nikita pressed her lips together as she didn’t know how to answer. Whitney waited and waved her hand away after some time. “Buddha said you could be quiet… so just go take pictures. You aren’t going to have a long time… so go… I’ll tell you when it’s time to see the evidence…”

Nikita was nervous as Whitney opened up the memory card and started to flip through the pictures. She stopped at one of a tree with the sky above. Whitney cocked her head to the side and turned the laptop more towards Nikita. “What do you think of this one?”

“What about it?” Nikita asked and Whitney sighed heavily. “If you saw this hanging up somewhere… what would you say about it?”

“Is it good enough to hang up somewhere?” Nikita questioned and Whitney groaned. “Wow… answering a question with a question. That’s a lot like Buddha too… can you just answer my question?”

Nikita twisted her hands together as she licked her lips. She shrugged her shoulders but saw that Whitney was not going to take a shrug for an answer. “The contrast of colors is nice. It’s a bit blurry on the sky… the wind is moving the leaves.”

“And how does it make you feel?” Whitney inquired. Nikita blinked her eyes and swallowed. “I took it because I thought it made me feel like it was a sign of freedom.”

“I didn’t ask why you took the picture. I wanted to know how it makes you feel.” Whitney corrected. Nikita pressed her hands against her knees and swallowed. “Melancholy.”

“Of course,” Whitney commented as she didn’t say anything else and went a couple more pictures and went through the same process with Nikita. Nikita continued to look at Whitney with anticipation of some sort of verdict when she started to pack up the laptop. “Well?”

“You had some good composition. You have a sense of light. I think we could have some fun,” Whitney declared as she pushed the laptop back into the bag. Nikita blinked again. “What’s next?”

“You are going to live with that camera. You were awkward with holding it. It was heavy in your hands. So you need to take it all over the place with you and take pictures even of the most mundane things,” Whitney directed. “And we’ll meet next week. Maybe at the mall or maybe we’ll take that son of yours somewhere.”

“He isn’t my son,” Nikita corrected and Whitney shook her head slightly. “You love him so he might as well be your son.”

Nikita rubbed her neck and looked at Whitney. “That’s it?”

“Isn’t that enough?” Whitney inquired and Nikita wasn’t sure. Whitney chuckled. “Buffy, you have to ease into this. You aren’t going to be able to cram photography into your head. You have to grow into it and have it come part of your life. That’s the only way you will get good.”

“But Davenport… I mean, Buddha… he is a photographer.”

“When was the last time you saw him with a camera?”Whitney inquired and Nikita tensed up. She had never seen him with a camera. Whitney tapped Nikita’s knee. “Buffy, he is running the business well. Because he doesn’t have to take the pictures to does the business work. He likes being a detective more.”

“Oh… okay…” Nikita stood up as she held onto her camera. She turned her head and saw Michael standing on the sidewalk. He waved and Nikita felt happy knowing that he was there for her.

“Is that your boyfriend?” Whitney asked as she stood up. Nikita nodded her head and Whitney whistled. “Buffy, if you don’t come back with some pictures of him next week…. And I don’t mean adult pictures… but regular pictures of that gorgeous man… there is something wrong with you.”

“So take pictures of Michael,” Nikita spoke and then she grinned as she saw that she had caught Whitney taken back by the statement. “Glad I can take pictures of people this week.”

“You could have taken pictures of me. You limited yourself with the assignment,” Whitney shook her head slightly as she looked over at Michael again and sighed. “If I only was thirty years younger…”
