There was silence for a moment and suddenly the air exploded as Adam and Walter both advanced with different motives.

“Sugar, just calm down now… you aren’t alone now,” Walter stepped down the hallway firmly. But he didn’t get there first.

Adam did.

“Get off of my dad you bully!” Adam hollered as he pushed at Nikita’s hips, barely jarring her body as she pushed up against Michael’s neck. Michael knew the difference. He wasn’t being choked. She was pushing hard, but she wasn’t hurting him but it was clear that Adam couldn’t tell that.

Nikita did stagger though a moment later when her mind registered what had just happened and what Adam had just said. The silence sucked up the space again as the men didn’t know how Nikita was going to respond.

Walter reached for Nikita as if he was afraid that she was going to push Adam back. Michael was helpless but had faith in Nikita.

And as he knew she would do, Nikita dropped her hands from Michael and moved to the other side of the hallway. She looked at Adam and didn’t try to hide her feelings. She couldn’t hide them right now. Nikita was ripped wide open in front of them all. “Do you remember how you felt when you didn’t have your mother and your father, Adam?”

Adam nodded his head up and down as he was shocked back into the reality of what he had done.

“That was my life… day in and day out as a child… and it got worse in Section… And then I thought I wasn’t…” Nikita looked over at Michael. “I thought I knew you so well…. I thought you would be there… I thought that my bad decisions that caused me to be in that position would be saved by you being there… to rescue me again…”

“Kita…” Michael whispered but Nikita shook her head from side to side as she turned and slammed her hands into the wall. “I thought I knew you! You should have been there!”

“Adam, go upstairs…” Michael directed but he watched as Adam shook his head from side to side. “No. You let her hurt you.”

“She didn’t hurt me, Adam,” Michael corrected as he pushed away from the wall. “Kita… just talk to us…”

Nikita turned while she was mauling on her lip. Then she dropped her hands again. “When I was out… I took walks ever y single day and for some reason I thought about you… and we hadn’t even made love at that point… but I walked every day because I couldn’t get you out of my head… and once you left Section and I was stuck in there… I walked every day…”

“God,” Walter rasped as he shook his head. “I thought you were doing rounds, Sugar…”

“It was the only time I could think about Michael,” Nikita turned to look at Walter. “Any time that I got to myself was not spent thinking about Section.”

Nikita turned to look at Michael and shook her head. “But you didn’t need that…. You weren’t there… you went to the mall… and then I felt so guilty for being a day late… because I could have given you a daughter to love and to have and to raise and to make into a wonderful woman that I wouldn’t ever be… so I had to find another way and that meant getting as far out of her life as possible… you weren’t there. You probably weren’t even thinking about me.”

“But he was!” Adam interjected before Michael could speak. Michael turned to his son. “Adam… no.”

“But that as to be the day that you went to the mall to buy her the ring you said that you had to buy… the one that you were afraid that I put underneath the tree for her!” Adam rapidly countered as he didn’t catch on that Michael didn’t want Nikita to find out about that ring.

The silence crashed into the hallway again and Nikita rubbed her face and then she leaned against the wall. “What?”

“Adam, now isn’t the time,” Michael warned and Adam groaned. “It’s already too late, Dad! You should have told her… hell, you should have given it to her!”

No one corrected Adam’s swearing as he dashed upstairs. Michael shook his head and finally found his voice. “Adam, don’t!”

“It won’t change anything,” Nikita rasped as she rubbed her arms. “It only makes… it worse… because I gave up first…”

“You were in an impossible situation, Nikita,” Michael spoke but she flinched and shook her head. “I had to be alone. That’s what I do in my life.”

“Sugar… you are so upset right now that you need to just sit down and take a breath…” Walter stepped forward and tried to touch her. Nikita wrenched away and shook her head. “No… I tried to do that… that is why we walk!”

Michael leaned his head back as he was back to the walk. He wished he would have just taken the walk right now. It was important to hear all of these things that were stuck in Nikita’s head, but there had to be a better way to hear all of this. There was a big chasm growing in this hallway and it scared Michael that it was going to be a permanent divide.

“Here is the box with the ring,” Adam jumped down the last three steps and thrust his hands out towards Nikita. Michael reached for it. But Adam turned and glared at his father. “You were wrong. You should have given it to her. She would have realized what it meant.”

“That ring was for that time and that Nikita, Adam,” Michael whispered as he wanted to explain it but it was hard to even start. “She doesn’t need an old ring for a woman that she used to be. There will be something else that is right for her.”

“There isn’t anything right for me. I’ve been good at being wrong my entire life… wrong mother… being in the wrong place at the wrong time… wrong lover… wrong trainee… wrong Operations… wrong…” Nikita stepped towards the door and she jumped up and slammed down. “I just wanted to go for a walk. And someone that was wrong and I don’t understand!”

“You weren’t wrong…” Michael and Walter both spoke but Nikita raised her hands. “This is the wrong place for me.”

“NO!” everyone protested, but Nikita was out the door. Walter was the first one out the door. Michael turned to look at Adam. “You stay here!”

“I want to go,” Adam protested. Michael pointed down the hallway. “We have company.”

Michael slammed the door as he raced after Nikita and Walter. Adam looked down the hallway and Mick raised a hand in the air with a half wave. “I’m Mick.”

“Adam,” Adam walked towards him and swallowed. “You were the one that Nikita gave my sister too…”

“Look Mr. Little Man… if we are going to talk about that, I need something hard to drink…” Mick turned to look into the kitchen. “Where does your father hide it?”
