The church was beautiful and Michael walked up the stairs slowly. Inside was Nikita and he could only hope that she would not fight him or run from him. He had seen Davenport across the street as he had pulled up. He got the nod from Davenport and he knew that Nikita was inside.
As the door opened, Michael saw the blonde hair of Nikita’s move into the church and down the aisle. He did not rush towards her. Instead, he turned to close the door silently and to notice that the Reverend Mother Rhoda was standing right there, looking in towards her.
The Sister was about to step in after Nikita and Michael touched her arm to stop her. Sister Rhoda looked up at Michael and saw his green eyes checking Joe’s movement as she eased to the side of the pew and sat down. “She has never gone in there, Mr. Pomeroy.”
Michael was a bit on his heels. He did not expect to see Sister Rhoda standing there. He knew that she had always been protective of the woman she called Joe. He shouldn’t have been surprised that she was there. But yet, it made it harder. “I need to talk to her.”
“She has never been inside of the church… never in the pews… I don’t think it’s the right time,” Sister Rhoda protested gently. Michael’s eyes flickered to look towards Nikita again. He knew that the Sister could see that he was looking at her. He turned his focus back to Rhoda. “You believe that the Lord works in mysterious ways, correct Sister?”
Rhoda felt a chill run down her spine. She was confused by what she was looking at, especially as she looked at Mr. Pomeroy. He was carefully studying Joe s if he knew her. Now that he spoke, she realized that somehow he did know this mysterious woman. It was at that point she regretted that she never had been able to get a photograph for him to view. “You know her.”
“I can’t explain how, Sister. But yes, after going thru some tests I realized that I had come across her in a different lifetime. I’m not sure if you believe in things like star-crossed lovers, true loves, soul mates… but believe me when I say that my life was never the same after I met her… and never the same after we parted,” Michael tried to explain. He realized that Sister Rhoda could be the one person who would stop Michael from seeing Nikita today.
Rhoda licked her lips as she shifted her weight and looked towards the back of Joe’s head. She was staring straight forward and Rhoda narrowed her eyes with the realization that Joe was waiting for someone. Rhoda looked at Michael Pomeroy and stepped to the side. “You better not hurt her.”
“Believe me, that is not what I want… I want to find out what happened… but I have to talk to her,” Michael spoke and Rhoda blinked her eyes. “Can you tell me her name? How you know each other? Where her family is?”
“That isn’t my story to tell,” Michael softly pointed out as he stepped forward. He pulled at the doors to separate the whole church and to give him some privacy. “Please understand… I did not know, Sister.”
“God be with you,” Sister Rhoda rasped as she took the other door and released it to close them together.
Michael walked down the aisle and slipped into the pew behind Nikita. He sat down off to the side of her and looked at her head as she continued to stare straight ahead. He inhaled and could just feel that presence that told him that it was Nikita. His body would only feel this way near his match. “Nikita.”
There was no response from her. Michael waited and looked forward at the details of the crucifix as he wanted to her to talk. There wasn’t even a fidget or any indication that he heard her. He parted his lips and sighed, “Kita.”
He watched as Nikita’s shoulders bounced ever so slightly up and then down. It was an indication that she knew that it was him. Michael ached to touch her, but stayed there for a long time before standing up and joining Nikita in the some pew, but with distance between them. “I know that you knew that I was here… I want to talk and find out what is going on.”
Nikita didn’t answer and Michael turned to look at her more. Her face was even more sullen and sunken than the pictures. She was holding her right elbow with her left hand in a way that probably indicated injury. Michael placed his hand up above his mouth as he took her in, feeling so guilty that she was like this because he had left her. He should have found a way to get her out too. He shouldn’t have just taken what Nikita had offered to do for him. He knew that what it was going to do to her soul. But he also wanted her to look at him. “Josephine.”
Nikita jerked her head to turn towards him. Her blue eyes were filled with pain, but not a tear in sight. She glared at him and then dropped her head slightly so that she was not looking at his face. He noticed that her right leg started to bounce nervously. He slid closer. “I’m here to help you… to find out what went on…”
“Leave,” Nikita spoke and Michael closed his eyes. “I just found you.”
“You have your life that you were meant to have,” Nikita declared as she turned her head to look forward again. Her leg was bouncing up and down, but there was no other indication of what was going on inside of her head.
“Kita…”
“Leave,” Nikita rasped as she closed her eyes and then stared forward.
“I cannot imagine how you did the things that you were forced to do…. How you had to figure out who got to live and who didn’t. I don’t know how you are out right now…. And how you got through those last couple months after you were able to get the rest of your support system out on the outside…” Michael spoke as he did not talk about their daughter. It was clear that Nikita was on an edge right now and he feared that speaking about their daughter would only cause her to bolt.
Nikita didn’t respond. She stared straight ahead. Michael waited and rubbed his hands on the wooden pew in front of him. “I think you wanted me to find you… you made sure that there were tools there for me to do it… You knew what I was doing… and you made sure that Jason had a copy of the information… maybe you didn’t plan it… but I think subconsciously, you had a plan in place for me to find you when things shook down… and I’m here to help you.”
“Stop talking,” Nikita demanded with a loud voice. She turned her head slowly and looked at Michael. “I don’t exist.”
“You weren’t supposed to make it out alive?” Michael questioned as he leaned towards Nikita, but Nikita turned her head forward again. She did not respond and Michael was left with the question unanswered. “You don’t need to be alone, Kita.”
Her leg stopped bouncing. All of Nikita’s defenses were up. She was locking herself off right now. Michael could only hope that she was still listening, even if she wasn’t responding. “I know that you are trying to make amends for those things you think you did… I know about all of the people that you have helped out…. How you have become the angel for this area.”
Michael saw Nikita’s fingers move against her elbow and Michael knew that she was hurt. “Please, Kita. You don’t need to do that. You have done enough. You are going to get hurt…”
It was like talking to thin air. He had known that this could happen. In fact, he had prepared for this to happen. But his heart had wanted to have that happy reunion that he knew that Adam had wanted. He wished that Nikita would just come with him right now. Instead, Michael palmed the cell phone that he had programmed to instantly call him and placed it on the wooden seat of the pew in the space between himself and Nikita. “I love you, Nikita.”
Michael stood up. He was going to have to make several short visits with Nikita over time. He knew that this wasn’t going to magically resolve anything. He could only hope that sometime in the future, she would start to open up and start giving some answers to what had happened. But for now, it was time to let Nikita process what had happened and that he was there for her.
Michael was about halfway to the exit when Nikita stood straight up. “Tell Davenport I spotted him before he even got in position the other more. He has gotten sloppy.”
Michael turned to look at Nikita. He couldn’t tell if she had taken the cell phone. He wanted to go back and hold her, but that wasn’t the right thing for right now. He would get slapped for that.
Michael didn’t say a word. He stepped out the doors and saw Sister Rhoda standing at the other doors before the exit. She looked at Michael and stepped forward to take his hands. “A baby must crawl before it walks, child.”
Michael nodded his head and exited outside, taking a deep breath. But yet, he was smiling slightly inside simply because Nikita was alive. Michael looked across the street to Davenport and grinned as he thought about what Nikita had said. Davenport had been much more elusive when he was first setting up surveillance on Nikita, but had become more relaxed as she had showed no initiative to be watching for people looking at her. Michael was going to have to let him know that Nikita had made him days ago.
But not quite yet.
