Rhoda had left a message for Nat about Michael Pomeroy’s visit and how it seemed that he knew Joe. It bothered her, but for some reason it seemed to make sense. Now she was outside of Joe’s door, pausing and knowing that she had to enter. “Joe…”

Nikita looked carefully with her eyes as she saw Rhoda walking into her room. She had been in the room trying to stop her mind and to stop the thoughts. It was best when she did not have to think about anything. To do that Nikita would often do work that was repetitive, but she was hurt as Michael had mentioned earlier.

She had never been able to stop thinking about Michael since that day that she made the decision for him. He had no way to stop with her. Nikita had ensured that he would go with Adam and leave her as she needed to be left. She could make sure that Adam had a father and that was good. There wasn’t a day that Nikita had wished that he would have found a way around her perfectly laid plans.

“I wanted to check in on you, Joe,” Rhoda spoke as she entered the room and closed the door. She saw that Joe was propped up against the wall as she held her elbow tenderly. “You knew Michael Pomeroy.”

Pomeroy.

Nikita batted her eyes with that name. She knew the second he first used that name. Nikita wanted to pretend that she did not know how Michael was living his life on the outside and she refused to talk to anyone about him. But Nikita knew what Michael was doing, but made all attempts to have all indications of where he was erased from anything that she read.

Rhoda was looking at her and Nikita slowly nodded her head slightly up and down. There was no reason to let Rhoda worry about Michael. He wasn’t going to stop coming around now that he had approached once. Nikita wasn’t sure how she would make Michael stop, but it would take some time.

“He wasn’t the one that hurt you, correct?” Sister Rhoda asked as she sat on the foot of her bed. Nikita felt her head pound with conflict on how to answer that question. But Nikita was wise enough to know that Rhoda was concerned about the bruises that Nikita had. She wasn’t worried about the other types of pain that Nikita often associated with Michael. “No.”

Rhoda was relieved to hear that Michael Pomeroy had nothing to do with what was going on with Nikita now. He had to hold some keys to what was going on with Joe, but both were so closed off to everyone else that Rhoda wasn’t sure how to approach Joe or Mr. Pomeroy at this point. “Have you been running from him?”

Nikita never meant to settle in somewhere near Michael. That had been the last desire she had. She wanted to be far away from him. She did not want to interfere with the life that he had on the outside. As soon as she had spotted Davenport, she knew that things along those desires had unraveled. Her mind knew that it had to have started with Walter. Walter had learned of her long ago desire to have a family, a white picket fence, and a dog. He was probably still working to make that dream happen for her.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Joe spoke as Rhoda had been about ready to ask another question. For some reason Rhoda couldn’t handle the silence that Joe often lived in today. Rhoda looked at Joe and leaned back. “Is there anything that you need?”

Nikita blinked her eyes and nodded her head slightly. “Ice.”

Rhoda jumped to her feet, now realizing how Joe was holding onto her elbow. She knew better than to ask Joe if she could look at it, but Rhoda knew that if she asked for ice, then Joe must feel like she needed it. “I’ll be right back.”

Nikita watched as the Sister disappeared from the room. There were times that she wanted to lash out at Rhoda and make her face her reality like Rhoda had tried to make Nikita face. But often, Nikita simply kept her mind numb. Just to think now was hurting her right now and she knew that sleep was not going to easily happen for a long time.

The ice came too quickly and Nikita cradled it around her elbow. It was as she looked down at her arm as it held the ice against the elbow that a searing memory blazed into Nikita’s being.

The feeling of her daughter with Michael in her arms for those precious minutes after she was born. Nikita had held her arms much like she was holding her arms right now, propped against a wall in The Perch. The tiny baby that she had made with Michael nestled in her arms, looking so much like Michael as she slightly moved her arms and mewed gently. She didn’t know how hard it was going to be to turn her over to Walter and to put into action a plan that she had made for months, to ensure that she would not be known about.

Rhoda heard the gasp from Joe as she had closed her eyes. “Joe?”

Nikita jerked her head away and pulled her hand away with the ice. She didn’t even hear Rhoda calling out to her. She needed to forget that memory. Suddenly she felt a hand on her leg and Nikita jerked her body again.

“Joe? Are you ok? Tell me what you are thinking about…. Let me help out…” Rhoda rapidly tried to make it back inside of Joe. She seemed like she was ready to fall apart into thousands of little pieces and Rhoda wanted to help her. Rhoda then saw the moment that Joe pulled herself back together and erected the wall between her and the rest of the world.

“I’m fine,” Joe spoke as she shifted her legs and then cupped her arm again with the ice in her hand. It was clear that whatever had come to Joe’s memories just moments ago were gone. Rhoda had lost that opportunity and she stood up. “I am sure that Mr. Pomeroy is going to try to visit again. If you desire me to keep him away, please let me know.”

Joe didn’t react to the statement and Rhoda nodded her head as she slipped out of the room. She had even more questions now than she had when she entered the room. Sister Camilla walked down the hallway and paused. “Reverend Mother, I heard that she was inside the church.”

“That will be up to Joe to confirm or not to confirm,” Rhoda spoke bluntly as she turned Sister Camilla away from Joe’s room and started to walk. “She has had a rough day. Let’s give her space.”
