“Kita? Nikita?” Michael called out as he heard her rasping breathing and then the heavy rain. She didn’t disconnect the line, but Michael doubted that right now she could hear him. He fought against the urge to fly into action, but that was simply because he was already in the car, heading towards the address that it appeared that the angel had just been at. It had been a long shot that he would find Nikita still in the area, but when he heard the call on the police scanner, Michael moved as he had been trying to move since earlier in the day when he changed his clothes.

The other cell phone rang and Michael switched over to it as he noticed the rain hitting the car heavier now. To know that Nikita was hurt and out in the pounding rain was starting to make Michael push the gas a bit more than he knew he should be. “Talk to me.”

“You got a call… I’m tracing it right now… Is she talking to you?” Jason started right into the business. Michael had told Davenport, Jason and Walter that he couldn’t stand by passively waiting for them to somehow find Nikita several hours ago. They almost all seemed relieved when he had declared that and Michael knew that they were all wishing for Michael to find her quickly.

But not like this.

“I can hear the rain…” Michael replied as he slowed down as he came to an intersection and paused. “Is she closed to the apartment complex that she was at earlier?”

“Not now… you need to turn left right now… It looks like she is in a small alley that is between buildings… no real name to it,” Jason directed Michael as Michael could even hear his fingers pounding away at the keyboards. “Do you want me to call the police and medics?”

“I need to get to her, Jason,” Michael declared as he placed that phone down and pulled up the other phone. “Kita? Nikita, can you hear me?”

Michael heard the squawk from the other phone and he quickly switched without moving his eyes from the street in front of him. “Stop, Michael…. You need to go back a couple buildings…”

“This is almost two miles from the scene,” Michael started to spin the wheel of his car around and then he stopped. It was so dark, but he saw a small glow in the distance. “I see her…”

Michael disconnected all of the phones and shoved them into his pocket as he jumped out of the car, leaving it running in the heavy rain. He moved down the darkness and saw the light from the cell phone that Nikita had dropped beside her body.

“Nikita…” Michael whispered as he squatted down beside her, looking at her battered body.

Nikita parted her lips and her eyes opened slightly. She saw Michael and then winced as she felt him touch her. “Ouch.”

“Let me get you to a hospital,” Michael spoke and Nikita shook her head from side to side slightly. “No… no hospital… I’m fine.”

“You aren’t fine,” Michael spoke as he looked at her face that looked like both eyes were swollen along with her lip. She looked like a rag doll lying in the rain. The rain was only getting heavier and Michael had to make a decision.

“Michael…” Nikita rasped with a slight cough. Michael scooped Nikita up in his arms and started to move back to the car. He could hear Nikita’s groans of pain as he moved, but he did not slow down. He got Nikita in the passenger seat and shut the door.

Dashing around the front of his car, Michael turned the heater on full blast as he saw how Nikita was shivering. He should drive right to the hospital, but there were so many things to worry about. There would be so many questions to answer and Michael wasn’t sure what to do about those questions. “Kita, let me take you to the doctors… you need it…”

Nikita weakly moved her head from side to side. “Dangerous.”

Michael frowned and he pulled out his cell phone, a plan forming in his head. “Jason… have Walter go get the Reverend Mother.”

“You have Nikita?” Jason inquired and Michael started to drive. “I’m taking her to my house… she is hurt but refuses to go to the hospital.”

“And how is a nun going to help you? Pray?” Jason demanded and Michael looked to Nikita as he stopped at a red light. When he was sure that no one was coming, Michael went through the light and continued on. “The Reverend Mother used to be a nurse… a trauma nurse… She can let me know if I have to get Nikita to doctors… she looks bruised…”

Michael heard Jason make the phone call and Michael stopped at the next light, unable to pull through the intersection this time. “Jason, we need to start a cover. I don’t know if Nikita got a handler or anything… her prints will match all those scenes… and the police will find out… In case we have to take her in.”

“I’ve been digging through all of the agencies since we knew that she was alive… I haven’t found anything like a handler… it was as if everyone wrote Section off. They may have just let her go… or…” Jason drifted off. Michael swallowed hard.

They could have thought Nikita died with the rest of those left behind in Section.

The rest of the ride was silent even though Michael had Jason on the line. A couple times Nikita coughed and groaned with so much pain Michael was sure that he was just going to pass his house and go to the hospital. But Nikita would moan out his name and his resolve to take her to the hospital would stop. He followed her wishes right now, but Michael was worried.

The door to his house opened and he saw Walter standing there. He stepped out as Michael cradled Nikita in his arms. “I have Adam upstairs… I don’t think right now is the time…”

“Rhoda?” Michael asked and Walter pointed his head towards the living room. The Reverend Mother stood there and moved as Michael eased Nikita down on the couch. She covered her mouth and shook her head. “I’ve been afraid of this…”

“She didn’t want to go to the hospital,” Michael stated as he did not move away even though he was soaking wet also. Rhoda shook her head and moved towards Nikita, taking her hand first to feel for the pulse, which was strong and that was good. “I don’t like this, Mr. Pomeroy… she has been beaten very badly and at the least needs x-rays.”

“We can probably take care of that in the morning. We need to try to keep things, if possible, off the record,” Michael explained. Rhoda looked at him with a careful eye and then covered her hands in latex gloves. She touched Nikita’s face and shook her head from side to side. “This isn’t good…”

Nikita turned her head and her body started to spasm. Rhoda turned Nikita to the side as she threw up. “She needs to go to the hospital, Mr. Pomeroy. This can be a serious sign of a concussion…”

Michael knew that and nodded his head.

“I’ll stay here with Adam,” Walter spoke and Michael looked at Rhoda and then to Nikita. He wasn’t sure what kind of mess it was going to cause taking Nikita in, but he had too. She may hate him for this, but it was the right thing to do.

“I’ll come with you…” Rhoda indicated as she held Nikita on her side and she threw up once more. “I would say call an ambulance.”

“I’m faster,” Michael announced as he bent down and swept Nikita in his arms again. He didn’t care if Nikita was going to despise him for this; she needed to be ok to be upset about his decision.
