“Who is on call tonight for Neuro?” Rhoda asked as she walked in with Michael as he cradled Nikita in his arms. She did not even wait for the doors to open. She walked into the ER as she had when she worked there. Most of the nurses were the same and they all started to move seeing their old friend who someone who was obviously injured.
“Dr. Burton,” the one nurse spoke and Rhoda groaned. “Is Dr. Bonoras around?”
“Probably finishing up his paperwork,” the nurse answered as Michael had to ease Nikita to the bed. She had thrown up again in the car but she had not gained consciousness. Michael didn’t leave her side as they all started to put monitors onto her.
“Have you called the police?” someone asked Michael. Michael looked at them and then to Nikita. He wasn’t sure what to say and what could happen if the wrong people found out about this. He took Nikita’s hand and swallowed hard. “I had to get her here…”
“I was going to call Lieutenant McCarty. He was helping me try to find who she was… It’s a long story,” Rhoda spoke as she covered the phone and told the nurse enough information to stop them from calling someone else in. She turned to her phone call, securing the Neurosurgeon that she wanted to look at Nikita.
Rhoda moved to Michael and touched his elbow. “She is in the right hands. Joe will be fine.”
“It’s Nikita,” Michael whispered as he looked at Rhoda. Rhoda nodded her head and swallowed hard. She had a sense that right now wasn’t the time to get involved with things. “Is that the name you want her to be known as on the record?”
Michael tilted his head in slight shock, but also some relief. He wasn’t sure. “I have to talk to her, Sister Rhoda…”
“Oh, don’t call her Sister when she is back here ordering us around,” a nurse spoke as she shook her head at Michael. “This is Nurse Rhoda… Or better yet, we called her Nurse Oda…”
“Hello Patrice,” Rhoda gently smiled as she felt a bit more at ease that her old friend was in the room now. “I know Joe here… it’s a long story…”
“As long as this man had nothing to do with what happened to her, I’m fine with keeping this between us right now… but you know…” Patrice warned and Rhoda nodded her head. Michael was aware of it to. They wouldn’t be able to keep the police away from this forever. “I’m calling Nat in.”
Michael heard the reference to Nathaniel McCarty and knew that he still had to have answers. Nat McCarty knew that something wasn’t exactly right with Michael’s story and this was probably going to make it more important to figure out what to tell him. But with Nikita unconscious right now, Michael didn’t have the answers.
Michael rubbed his face as he saw Nikita move her head to the side. She opened her eyes and he swore she looked right at him. She whispered something and then her eyes closed again. Patrice turned and looked at Michael. “I take it that your name is Michael.”
“Yes,” Michael nodded his head and Patrice smiled again. “She remembers you… so things are good.”
Michael rubbed his hands against his pockets and felt the cell phone that Nikita had used to call him. He hadn’t even been sure that Nikita had taken it but now he was relieved that he had left it for her. Michael blinked back tears as he thought about what could have happened if she didn’t have the cell phone.
“Everyone who does not work for this hospital, out of the room,” a doctor spoke as he walked in. He pointed to Rhoda. “You too… you aren’t here for spiritual rites so leave this room.”
“Thank you Dr. Bonoras,” Rhoda took Michael’s arm and moved him out to the hallway. Michael looked down the hallway towards the waiting room and then to the door that they had shut between him and Nikita. Michael rubbed his neck. “I just found her….”
“Maybe you should work on some answers to give for when Nat arrives… and when the nurses need answers,” Rhoda offered as she stood there. She had no plans on leaving. Her friends would give her more information about Joe which she could share with Michael Pomeroy.
Then Rhoda reminded herself that the woman’s name was Nikita.
“I’ll find you when I find out more,” Rhoda declared and Michael nodded his head. He had to move into action. He stepped out into the waiting room and to the area that they had indicated was ok for cell phones. He started to dial and knew that he was going to make directives that had to be followed.
But he kept staring at the door, wanting to be there with Nikita.
