Michael pulled his head up as the door to Nikita’s private room opened up and he was relieved to see Walter slipping into the room. Michael knew that he wasn’t counting his blessing that the police hadn’t been involved yet. He knew that it was because of Sister Rhoda.

“I can get some identifications made, Michael…. Jason is trying to take care of other things,” Walter whispered as he looked at the bed and then went to the foot of it. “How is she?”

“The concussion is the most dangerous thing,” Michael answered as he rubbed his arms. When the doctors, from multiple specialties, had reported how lucky Nikita was, Michael realized how close it had been for her. Somehow even with the beating that she took, the concussion was the only serious injury. She had lots of bruises and they said that she would hurt for a long time. “They said it’s pretty severe but that there is no bleeding or other indications of other types of brain injuries…”

“That’s good, right?” Walter asked and Michael shrugged his shoulders. “How are they going to tell? She was telling people that her name was Joe.”

Walter went to the window and sat down on the window sill while he considered Michael’s question. He didn’t have an answer. “I guess you won’t know until she wakes up.”

“And because she was tired before whatever happened happened, she could be asleep for a while,” Michael advised Walter as he shook his head. “I can’t think about these things… I need you to work with Jason on something.”

“On what?” Walter asked as he was ready to do something. He hated not being able to do anything for Nikita right now. But it was clear that the doctors felt that she needed rest.

“Rhoda said that Nikita would disappear for days… but often the work of the angel happened at night and quickly… she had to be somewhere when she wasn’t being the angel,” Michael explained as he looked directly at Nikita. She may not have been talking and she may have been hiding. She was hurt, but she was also smart. “I think she has an apartment… a safe house… somewhere that she would stage herself for what she was going to do as the angel… and someplace that she would go to switch back to being Joe.”

“That is going to be impossible to find out, Michael,” Walter warned and Michael shook his head. “You have a defined space that she has worked…”

“Of hundreds of miles… heavily populated miles, Michael,” Walter pointed out with a heavy sigh. Jason would probably thrive on this type of task. In fact, Walter did have something to reveal. “She hadn’t used any of her known aliases or anything that was used on a mission… Jason tried all of those.”

Michael stood up and moved to the bed. Nikita was getting restless and he stroked her neck gently. It was the one part of her body that did not seem to be bruises with the ugly dark purple marks that seemed to be spreading across her body. “How is Adam?”

“Worried,” Walter responded as he walked to the foot of the bed. “But it is probably for the best that he didn’t see her.”

“She won’t stay here long,” Michael glanced at Walter. That was all that was needed to be said. Walter would take care of arrangements. “Do you want me to get Adam out of the house for a while?”

Michael considered that and shook his head. “No.”

“No?” Walter asked as he was confused. “But Michael, she doesn’t need someone to see her like this…”

“Nikita didn’t want Adam’s life to be negatively impacted by her being back in my life. If I send him away with you, she’ll see that as the first sign of taking something away from Adam,” Michael explained as he placed his hands on the railing, knowing that he couldn’t touch her more. “I’ll explain it to Adam.”

“I was thinking that it might be hard for Nikita,” Walter shrugged his shoulders slightly. “She got beaten up by a man that was beating his daughter… that had to be a motherly response…”

“Nikita always was an advocate for children,” Michael snapped as he blinked his eyes. He wasn’t sure when he would be ready to talk about his daughter with Nikita, but he did not believe that she was ready for that any time soon. “First thing is first… we need to her to come with me… and not back o the convent.”

“She wouldn’t do that now,” Walter stated and Michael turned his entire body to look at Walter. Michael wasn’t sure about what Walter was saying. The convent was a sanctuary of sorts for Nikita. There wasn’t a reminder of the life that she could have had or the life that maybe she could still have. She didn’t have to face everything that she was running from.

But now, it could be dangerous for Nikita and the convent if she did go back.

“Go work with Jason, please,” Michael directed Walter as he knew that the answers had to be there, even if Nikita wasn’t willing to give them to him when she woke up.

Walter stopped at the door and then returned. “You are afraid of what is going to happen when she wakes up.”

“I was afraid of what was going to happen when I saw her the next time. We all know that there was something seriously wrong,” Michael rasped as he looked infinitely more tired than just moments ago. Walter imagined that Michael was probably outline all the ways that Nikita could try to leave the hospital by herself and plotting the ways to counter any measures that Nikita could take.

Walter looked at Nikita’s battered body and sighed. “I’ve seen her in a bad way before, Michael. We all have stayed outside of MedLab rooms at one point or another while she was hurt. She didn’t like it, but she never left before she could take care of herself.”

Michael looked at Nikita and rubbed his arms across his body. “I don’t think she cares about herself in that way any longer.”

“She called you,” Walter answered as he did not need to stay any longer. He slipped out of the room and allowed Michael to continue his silent guard at Nikita’s bedside.

There was no way that Michael wasn’t going to be there when she woke up.
