Michael had waited in the room with Nikita. He was sure that he had slept more this day than Nikita had. That was perhaps one of the first things he had learned how to identify Nikita doing when she became his material and by the first month of training, he knew it. He knew how to tell when Nikita was faking sleeping. That was what she had done all day today. He knew that it was an avoidance measure, but in ways, it was helping him keep her in the hospital because the doctor wanted to see her awake much more before she was released.
Not that Nikita would be stopped by doctor’s orders.
Before Michael could speak, he saw Lieutenant Nathaniel McCarty walking in. Michael knew that he arrived outside the room about ninety minutes ago and it was clear that he was waiting for Nikita to wake up. Michael’s defenses were on high gear right now and he knew that he had to keep things in check.
“Joe… Nikita… whatever your name is… you are officially listed as a Jane Doe in this document, but it does put you on notice that you are not to leave this hospital without speaking to me and my department about what is going on,” Nat spoke as he placed the official document on Nikita’s lap. Nikita looked at him and blinked her eyes. “It’s for your own well being and since you have made a decision to tell us to call you a different name, it also shows that you have the intelligence to hide things that we need to know.”
“Lieutenant, is this necessary?” Michael asked as he took the paper and looked at it. In the first couple rows Michael could tell that Nat meant business here. But Michael wasn’t sure if Nat was upset about what Nikita was doing, or if he was more upset that he was finding out that he did not know enough about the eccentric forensic scientist that he did work with often.
“I could drag you into the station for your involvement in this,” Nat pointed a finger as he shook his head. “Get her to tell us her involvement with the angel… give me answers why you suddenly appeared out of nowhere and maybe I won’t try to press charges against you.”
Michael folded the paper and handed it back to Nikita. Michael’s calm demeanor and the blank expression that Nikita held frustrated Nat. He had hoped that this move would get them to talk. Instead, they pulled back even more. “And cease all hacking activities on my computer.”
Nat slammed out of the room and Nikita extended her hand back with the paper. Michael didn’t take it and Nikita allowed it to drop to the floor. Michael went to the door and frowned as he saw that there were now officers in the hallway, obviously keeping track of what Nikita was doing.
“I need answers, Kita,” Michael spoke as he dimmed the lights a bit.
“Joe,” Nikita stubbornly spoke and Michael forced himself to count to ten before looking at Nikita. He was tired and he knew that his judgment could easily be impaired by being tired. He went to the bed and put his chair between Nikita and the door, blocking the view of her.
“Joe, I just need yes and no answers for a few questions. Are you willing to do that for me?” Michael inquired as he hoped that she did not say no. Nikita looked at Michael’s green eyes and she gasped as she felt the pain of looking at him. She slightly nodded her head up and down as she turned her head slightly away from Michael to lessen the pain that she was feeling right now.
“Section One… it is destroyed, correct?” Michael asked as he needed to hear it from Nikita.
“ Yes,” Nikita spoke as she closed her eyes slightly.
“Were you to die with Section One?” Michael inquired as he needed to know this.
“No,” Nikita slightly swung her head from side to side, but Michael paused as it was difficult without Nikita looking at him. “So you were to live?”
Nikita stopped and looked at him. Her blue eyes were filled with emotion for that split second that said everything even though not one word was said. Michael could tell that she was to live and that Nikita felt so much guilt. There was so much there that he needed to learn, but this was not the time or place. Now that Lieutenant McCarty was getting his department officially involved along with the courts, Michael had to worry about things much faster.
“Are you working for another agency?” Michael inquired as he leaned in a bit. He did fear this. He did fear that this could be a ruse to get to him, but his heart told him no.
“No,” Nikita whispered as she turned her head to look towards the window.
Michael saw Nikita’s arm starting to twitch and he slowly formulated the next question, knowing that he could get the answer. “Did they assign you a handler once Section was taking down?”
Nikita turned onto her shoulder and Michael stood up. He moved to the other side of the bed and squatted to look as close as possible Nikita in the eye. “They had to have assigned someone to help you get out…. Who is your handler Nikita? How do I get in contact with them?”
Nikita stiffened and turned onto her back. “Leave.”
Michael stood up and allowed his frustration to show by slapping his hands against his legs. “This is necessary, Nikita. Nat isn’t going to give up. He needs to have answers and I don’t have the time to produce the fake answers…. Your handler can help us.”
Nikita stayed quiet and she focused on a spot across the room. She swallowed back a groan and Michael thought that she swallowed back a cry. He rubbed his hands through his hair in aggravation. “Is this some sort of Post Traumatic Disorder, Nikita? Did they do something so you can’t talk about what is hurting you? Tell me how I can help… that’s what I want to do.”
“Help Adam,” Nikita stated without moving her eyes. She was in full shut down mode and Michael rolled head backwards. He needed space and he was going to have to find another way to see what kind of connections Nikita still had. He could not imagine that there wasn’t someone assigned to assist her once she took down Section.
“I’m going to go home for a while… and I know that you are going to think about leaving,” Michael directly addressed the issue. He learned that it was good to tell Adam the truth so he was going to do the same thing with Nikita right now. “Davenport is going to be in the area, watching for you trying to leave. He has three levels of men assisting. Davenport is the only one from Section… please don’t hurt them too badly if you do decide to leave – it will make things even worse.”
Nikita didn’t move and did not response. Michael blocked the doorway again and leaned over. “There are also officers out there… if you are going to hurt anyone… hurt Davenport’s men… but don’t hurt those officers, Kita.”
Michael bent over and rubbed his hand along her neck. He couldn’t imagine that Nikita did not find it yet, but he had planted a wafer tracker on her which was still there. Nikita was good so he had a feeling that the wafer tracker would end up on some poor nurse at some point soon. But it was just another way to try to counter what Nikita would be doing shortly.
Michael stopped at the door and looked at Nikita. “I love you, Nikita… that never stopped... In fact, it grew when you had me leave with Adam… I just want to help you... protect you right now… like I know that you have done for myself and Adam since we got out.”
Nikita turned her head slightly and looked directly at Michael. “Go back to Walter and Jason.”
