“Nikita Wirth? You are finally calling me,” the man answered on the second ring. Michael hesitated as it was clear that this man at least knew Nikita Wirth.
“Who is this?” Michael questioned as he stood up and looked down to the room below. He got a chill as he realized it seemed so much like Section at night. He could not understand why Nikita would live like this.
The man chuckled. “I’m Everett D’Octavi… and you must be Michael Samuelle.”
Michael stopped his movement and he stood straight. He was ready for attack if it happened. “How do you know who I am?”
“I asked Ms. Wirth to have you call me also so I can establish some guidelines of how I can help you and her out now that Section has been terminated,” Everett answered as if Section was closed as part of a merger. He heard silence and he cleared his throat. “I take it since it has been almost nine months since I gave her my information that you did not hear this from her.”
“You are a master of stating the obvious Mr. D’Octavi,” Michael briefly replied.
“Look, Mr. Samuelle, I don’t know what has happened to Ms. Wirth. She had promised me that she would contact me as soon as she was in the clear from the closure of Section…”
“Closure? It is like Section disappeared. I don’t think that is just a closure,” Michael coolly interrupted as he moved forward and leaned on the ledge that overlooked below.
“There is no polite way to say that Section had run its course and was put out of commission, Mr. Samuelle. But Ms. Wirth went above and beyond her call of duty to ensure that all of the operatives were evaluated. And while we continue to talk, please call me Everett,” Everett rattled off quickly. “I have been concerned about Ms. Wirth’s activities. As I said, months have passed.”
“And you didn’t think to look for her?” Michael questioned as he was trying to find somewhere in this condo that did not look like Section. Michael also knew exactly why Everett didn’t look for Nikita. If she didn’t want to be found, she wouldn’t have been found.
And then he knew that in ways Nikita at arranged for him to find all of this.
“Things are becoming clear for you, Mr. Samuelle. Unfortunately, I’m quite behind in the events that have led to you calling me,” Everett pointed out with a steady voice. “I informed Ms.Wirth –“
“Call her Nikita,” Michael declared as he stood up and looked around. He didn’t know how Nikita had run Section for those years. And to created again in her own home? Maybe that was why she was staying at the convent.
“I informed Nikita that we knew that she had allowed you to leave and that we were 100% in agreement with that decision and that we wanted to continue to make sure that you were allowed to have the life that you were building. Only a few of us know of you…” Everett declared with a firm voice.
“You are her handler?” Michael finally asked the question that he needed to have the answer too.
“Liaison… between multiple organizations… for only two people… Nikita and yourself,” Everett explained with less force behind his voice. “I have another life to lead.”
“Then I guess I need you to step into the role of liaison for a while,” Michael spoke as he walked out of the room and sat on the stairs that led up to the room. He didn’t know if he would be able to ever get Nikita back after looking at this condo. “Nikita was partaking in some extra activities that I’m sure that would be less than sanctioned.”
“Oh,” Everett drew out his word. “I’m taking that she set up close to you and close to where I am. I’ve heard rumors of a so-called angel. On the surface I told everyone that it had to be a group of people. But I knew of a couple people that could pull the tasks off on their own…”
Michael knew that Everett was speaking of himself and Nikita. “I have not been involved.”
“But now you are,” Everett commented with short words.
Michael pushed his legs out and stared at his boots. “I’m involved because of Nikita. And it is too complicated to discuss over the phone.”
“This transmission is at least quadrupled encrypted, Mr. Samuelle,” Everett gloated and Michael closed his mouth to stop the first retort to come flying out of his mouth. He paused and then spoke. “Still too complicated and I need your help sooner than later with Nikita.”
“Surely she hasn’t been arrested,” Everett chuckled.
“The last act as the angel didn’t go as planned. She got quite severely injured… and now a Lieutenant has gotten a court order that will force Nikita to answer questions if she tries to leave the hospital,” Michael outlined the situation quickly.
“I guess I’m taking a trip to you,” Everett casually declared as if it was not unexpected.
“You’ll meet me at the hospital,” Michael outlined where he would meet this man. He needed to go there because Davenport could also watch things to make sure that no trap was being created.
“You aren’t watching over Nikita to stop her from trying to leave the hospital?” Everett coldly questioned. Michael stood up and moved down the steps. He pulled out his own cell phone and snapped a picture of the room. “She isn’t herself.”
“I can be there in ninety-minutes,” Everett spoke and then hung up. Michael looked at the phone as he had not even told this man which hospital. Michael wasn’t sure what to think about what was happening.
He had other things to worry about. He took several pictures and sent the email off before using his own phone to call Walter.
“So tell me what kind of bathtub my Sugar has in that place…” Walter answered and Michael was struck mute for a moment. “Michael?”
“I sent some pictures… they will explain what I’m seeing and why I’m scared…” Michael directed Walter as he did not have the ability to say it out loud. Walter wouldn’t believe him until he saw it with his own eyes. “I need you to come to the hospital.”
“Why? Did Nikita ask for me?”
“Her handler is coming to the hospital…” Michael lifted his head and then stopped. He got on the floor and looked up.
And finally something didn’t look like Section.
