But Nikita’s touch kept him where he was. He slowly turned to look at Nikita and he came closer. He touched her cheek even though she wasn’t able to look at him. “I’m not going anywhere.” Nikita slowly moved her head and opened her blue eyes. Michael touched the circles underneath her eyes and pressed his lips together as he realized how tired she was right now. “You haven’t been sleeping, have you?” Nikita shook her head slightly from side to side. Michael rubbed his hand away from her cheek and down to her shoulder. “You need to sleep to heal.” Nikita closed her eyes and then trembled. She opened her eyes and looked directly back at Michael. “Memories.” Michael nodded his head. He could tell that she was haunted. He wanted to tell Nikita to talk about it, but she wasn’t ready for that. Michael wasn’t even sure that Nikita was really ready for her to hold onto him. It was clear that she was completely overwhelmed and had found that living in a world of solitude was easier than anything else. “Do you trust your handler? His card said that his name was Everett… he is Tom to Walter.” Nikita moved her head up and down slightly. “Why didn’t you call him?” Michael inquired as he stood there, feeling Nikita’s body twitching. Nikita turned her head away. “Memories.” It was like a riddle but Michael knew that he was missing too many parts. Nikita closed her eyes again and her body gasped. She moved and groaned. She opened her eyes as she was panting hard. “Stop them… Please.” Michael looked to the door and then pulled down the railing. Nikita moved over with pain of moving her body. He got onto the edge and leaned back on the bed to look at Nikita. “I’m here for you… however you need me, Kita.” Nikita took her hand and placed it on Michael’s leaving lots of space between them. She squeezed it and parted her lips. “I can’t stay here.” “I was surprised that you were still here,” Michael admitted as he did not want to push Nikita. He looked at Nikita as she regulated her breathing. Michael wondered if it would be better for Nikita to just break down. “I can take you to my house when we leave… I don’t want you to go to the convent… and especially not your penthouse.” “It was safe,” Nikita spoke and Michael wasn’t sure if Nikita was talking about the convent or if she was talking about the penthouse. He did not want to touch that right now. “I can protect you, Kita.” “Nothing after me,” Nikita rasped. “I can help you deal with the past that is haunting you,” Michael pointed out and Nikita closed her eyes as the tears started to roll. Michael used his other hand to stroke Nikita’s hair out of her face. She was being chased by those memories and Michael wanted to help her. And this was the beginning.
