The room was so cozy and the recliner was not a bed. Nikita leaned her head back and looked at the caramel colored walls and saw the framed pictures of Adam. She rubbed her hands against the recliner and turned her head as Michael was standing in the doorway.

He had instinctively known not to take her right to a bedroom. Days in the hospital made Nikita crave to be out of a bed. She didn’t have to ask Michael to not take her to a bedroom. She could walk, but it was a tough process.

“You can stay here for however long you need, Kita,” Michael spoke as he entered the room. He knew that it was too soon to tell Nikita that he never wanted her to leave. He was sure that Nikita couldn’t hear that right now. He knew that everything was a tentative agreement.

Nikita nodded her head slightly up and down as he pulled a chair over towards her and sat down. He waited and then took her hand. Nikita didn’t look at his hand touching hers. It felt nice but on many levels it was a feeling she wasn’t sure if she could allow herself to enjoy.

“Adam will be home soon… and you’ll see how big he has grown…” Michael explained as he couldn’t stand the silence. Nikita had always been the one who would talk more in their relationship and now it was basically onto him for any sort of conversation to be made. “And you don’t need to worry about him and what he thinks about you… He adores you… he was the one that wanted me to find you once that Walter told us about Section…”

Nikita closed her eyes. She was conflicted about Adam knowing about Section.

“He has picked up on so many things… and it is scary. I know that I felt that I had to teach him things in case something happened… in case something had happened to you and others were after us… but now I want to make sure that he has a childhood… but he is going to fight me on that,” Michael continued to talk as his fingers moved in Nikita’s hand. She wasn’t pulling her hand away and Michael was going to stay with what he was doing.

“He idolizes Jason… who has grown into a good man, Kita,” Michael spoke and he watched as Nikita turned her head to look at him. She settled her head as she looked at Michael’s face. She was not looking away and Michael held her eye contact for such a long time. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again, Kita.”

Nikita blinked her eyes and nodded her head slightly. She never thought she would see Michael again. She knew where he was. She always had. But that wasn’t why she settled in this area. She had meant to stay away and to only be in this area for a month before moving on. But things didn’t go as planned at the end.

As Nikita’s eyes closed, Michael could see the change in her face. He reached over and stroked her healing face and shook his head from side to side. “Please… don’t think about the past right now. I can see that it is too hard. I didn’t mean to bring this on.”

“Dad?” Adam called out as soon as he opened the door. Nikita’s head rose immediately as she looked to the doorway. Michael stood up and bent down. “Is it ok for Adam to come in here?”

Nikita nodded her head up and down. She wanted to see Michael’s son. She needed to see him.

Michael moved to the doorway and stepped out into the hallway. Adam skidded to a stop and he smiled. “Is Nikita here?”

“We got back from the hospital just a while ago, Adam. But she really is still recovering,” Michael warned and Adam nodded his head and down. “I get it, Dad.”

“She is already dealing with a lot of things, Adam. She doesn’t need to be stared at. She doesn’t look her best,” Michael spoke again as he stepped to the side to stop Adam from forwarding into the room. Michael was rewarded by Adam rolling his eyes. “I talked to Walter outside. I already heard all of this.”

Michael was stunned and that moment was all that Adam needed to slip passed his father and into the room. It was when Michael heard Adam say, “Hi, Nikita. I hope that you are going to stay with us,” that Michael moved into the room also.

Nikita lifted her hand and sort of waved to Adam. Adam tilted his head to the side. “You know, Walter made it sound like you looked like a Halloween mask…. But your face doesn’t look that bad at all. Maybe a bit of the raccoon eyes… but Jimmy Gilbert had that look the other week and that was because he walked into a classroom door… not because he was being brave like you were being.”

“Adam!” Michael sharply spoke as it was that kind of comment that Michael did not want Nikita to have to hear right now.

“What? You always told me the truth and I’m just doing the same,” Adam shrugged his shoulders. He looked at his dad and smiled. “Plus, you always told me and Walter reminded me, Nikita hates lies and hates when people sugar-coat things. Truth is always the best policy.”

Michael was stunned as he couldn’t believe that his son was lecturing him right now. “There is the truth and then there is just talking without a censor, Adam.”

“It’s ok,” Nikita spoke up as she turned her head to look at Michael. “You taught him well, Michael.”

Michael looked at Nikita and knew that part of the reason why he told Adam the truth from that first day was because of how much Nikita hated the lies. Maybe that was why Adam had grown up to seem so much like Nikita. “Kita…”

“I’m fine,” Nikita looked at Michael and then half smiled at Adam. “But you could speak with a softer voice.”

“I’m sorry,” Adam blushed as he pushed one leg in front of another. “I got excited. I know that you are here now because you were meant to be with my father… because now I can thank you for the best gift ever.”

Adam now sat down on the chair that Michael had put over there just moments ago to talk to Nikita. He launched into how he knew that the angel was real and it was so neat that it was Nikita. Then he rambled into things happening at school about kids that Michael had never heard about.

And somehow, within minutes of Nikita meeting Adam again, Michael was learning more about his son.
