Michael opened his eyes slowly, feeling his hands on his chest. With a startle, Michael looked down to his chest where he had last seen Nikita sleeping while listening to his heartbeat. He had Nikita there all night from when she arrived in his room. She had not said a word, but Michael didn’t care. She had made the decision to come to him.

Turning his head, he saw that the bed was empty. He knew that it wasn’t a dream that Nikita came to him, but he couldn’t believe that she was already up. He fretted that she had a nightmare and left because he didn’t wake up. She needed to rest still. Michael turned his head and saw that the clock read that it was after eleven and that the alarm had been turned off.

Jumping to his feet, Michael rushed down the hallway to find Adam’s room empty. Michael wasn’t sure, but he hoped that Adam had gotten to school on time. Michael had always been waking him up. Michael heard the quiet in the house and moved down the stairs quickly.

There was no television on and no sign of Adam’s backpack. He moved into the kitchen where there was a pot of coffee on and it was missing about half of the contents. Michael poured a cup and turned to see that his lab door was open.

Michael wondered if Davenport had come in and gotten Adam ready for school. Going into the lab, he saw Nikita sitting there on his stool. “Kita?”

Nikita pulled her hands away from the keyboard and looked at Michael. She looked like she had been up for a while and she had taken a shower. Nikita nodded her head towards Michael but did not say a word. Michael turned to see that she had some of his cases up on the board and that there was some processing of machines working right now. Nikita had the ability to do this work, but it surprised him that Nikita just started in on the work. “Did you get Adam ready for school?”

Nikita nodded her head up and down before giving a tentative thumbs up sign. Michael placed his mug down on the desk that Nikita was at and touched her shoulder. “You didn’t need to do that…. But I appreciate it.”

Nikita stood up from the stool and stepped away. Michael looked at her and pulled her back. “You don’t need to do any of this, Kita. This is my work.”

Looking down to the floor, Michael felt as if he had just physically hurt Nikita by his words. He trusted her to do this work, but he did not want Nikita to feel like she had to do this. There were times that when Michael was doing this work that it felt too close to being like in Section One. That wasn’t what Nikita needed right now. He stepped forward and tipped her chin to look at him. “If you want, you can help. But I don’t need you to do this.”

Nikita nodded her head up and down as she took his hand and squeezed it. Nikita dropped both of their hands and Michael exhaled as he looked around the room before looking back to Nikita. “My priority right now is you… and that is all you need to work on, Kita.”

Nikita swallowed hard and moved to his laptop across the room. She turned it on and started to type. Michael wasn’t sure what she was doing, but Michael allowed her to work as he picked up his mug and took a sip of the strong coffee. It was waking up his mind and he hated to admit it, it felt good to sleep in some. He watched as Nikita worked quickly and typed at a speed that he had never seen from Nikita before. His interest was reaching a peak of having to go over to look at the laptop when Nikita stepped back.

He wondered if Nikita had decided to type him a message or if she had decided to start communicating via typed word. Michael knew that it would be a great advantage if that was what had happened. He started to cross the room when he heard his cell phone ringing. He hadn’t grabbed it from the room and he watched as Nikita pulled it out of her jeans. She extended her hand towards Michael.

Michael took it and opened it as he walked around to look at the laptop, his eyes finding it hard to process what he was seeing.

“Michael, what just happened?” Jason practically shouted before Michael could even say hello into the phone. Michael jerked his attention away from the screen and blinked as he heard Jason’s question. “What?”

“I’ve been working practically nonstop trying to get into Nikita’s pseudo-Section system… and I just hit one key that should have done absolutely nothing…” Jason started to explain as Michael leaned forward and looked at the screen.

He glanced back at Nikita as he realized what he was seeing. Nikita nodded her head up and down before walking out of the lab without another sound.

“I got full access to everything. There was no way that I should have gotten that access at all. Did you get into her system yourself?” Jason finished his rambling report about what had happened.

“Nikita opened the access,” Michael muttered as he pulled a chair over and sat down in front of the screen. He started to click and saw all of the records of everything that she had done since she got in the area. “Jason…”

“This is amazing… Look at these intercepts that she got from some of these places… I don’t know how well any of this would stand up in court, but if we use your friend Tom to legitimize these records, there is no way anyone could say that they were innocent of their crimes…” Jason rattled off quickly as he was excited about what he had seen in front of him.

“Don’t worry about the cases… see if you can find anything about what happened in Section at the end… anything about Nikita,” Michael directed as he pulled his hands off of the laptop and swallowed hard. He didn’t think that there would be anything there from Nikita. She was giving access to things that they all wanted, but she was controlling what. “Be careful for additional security, Jason. Knowing Nikita it could be laced with traps…”

“I’ve been given administrator rights, Michael,” Jason gushed as he was sure that this was all good. “I’ve worked with Nikita long enough to know how she runs…”

“But yet you needed her to give you access,” Michael retorted as he swallowed hard and rubbed his face. He needed a shower, breakfast and to spend time with Nikita. “Get some sleep too, Jason. Working nonstop on this isn’t necessary.”

“We all need answers, Michael,” Jason fired back as he groaned. “But I’ll take that under advisement.”

Michael didn’t say anything further. He closed his phone and placed it on the desk beside the laptop. Michael stepped out of the lab and saw Nikita at the stove, cooking eggs. Nikita looked up at Michael and gently nodded her head. Michael strode towards her and took her face in his hands. He stared at her eyes as she looked back at him. Michael placed a kiss to her forehead and then dropped his hands. “Thank you.”

Nikita motioned with her head back to the eggs and Michael stepped away. He wished he could tell what was going on in Nikita’s head. He hated that he had no ability to do anything right now. It was all on Nikita and what she was willing to deal with and reveal. He sat down at the counter and watched Nikita finish the eggs, grab two pieces of toast and retrieve some Morningstar Farms sausage from the microwave. He looked at the plate and then to Nikita. “You did eat, right?”

Nikita nodded her head up and down as she started a tea kettle. She glanced at her watch and moved into the lab to only reappear with a print out. Michael looked at the results and grabbed her hand. “Thank you, Kita.”

Nikita didn’t respond. She turned back to her tea and Michael knew that for now, this was her way of saying thank you for him last night.
