Jason looked around the house as he entered. He had been in briefly after Nikita had first come to Michael’s house, but that was actually weeks ago now. He hadn’t seen Nikita since that time and he did not expect Nikita to look as put together as she did right now. Jason knew that Michael got Nikita to go shopping the previous day but to see Nikita in a pair of dark slacks and a button down shirt; Jason saw a spark of the woman that she had been inside of Section.
Before she was in charge.
“Hello, Oper… Nikita,” Jason stumbled as he shook his head. Nikita looked at him straight on and that was when Jason saw the vacant look in Nikita’s eyes. It was then that Jason saw what Nikita looked like the first two months she had been in charge of Section, but this time it was more encompassing her whole being.
Nikita nodded her head. She turned to look at the coffee and then pointed. Jason shook his head back and forth. “Nah… I got off of that stuff once I was out.”
Nikita turned and with the other hand pointed to the fact that the coffee was decaffeinated. Jason moved forward and shook his head from side. “Really… the taste brings back… memories.”
Nikita nodded her head as she moved to the refrigerator and opened it up to pull out some Crystal Light ice tea. She poured some into the glass that she had out for herself and looked up at Jason. He was finding it odd that Nikita was still finding a way to communicate but without talking. It almost scared him, but this time he nodded his head, although he wasn’t really thirsty.
“Hi Jason,” Davenport spoke as he entered the room. Nikita left the pitcher on the counter and closed the refrigerator. She vanished in the next second and Jason turned around to look at Davenport. “Where did she go?”
“Too many people in the room,” Davenport shrugged his shoulders as if it was nothing. Jason leaned against the counter and watched as Davenport took some of the ice tea and replaced the pitcher. It was then that Davenport looked at Jason and realized that he was confused. “Well, the only time outside of a rare meal that Nikita is in a room with two people at the same time is with Michael and Adam. I guess too many people make her uncomfortable right now.”
“That’s really sad,” Jason whispered as he couldn’t hide his opinion. He never thought that getting out of Section could cause this to happen to someone. He shook his head as Davenport turned and sat at the table. He leaned back and groaned slightly. “At least you know so that you don’t take it personally.”
“Maybe she just knows that we are going to talk about her,” Jason shrugged his shoulders slightly.
“I told her that we were going to talk about her,” Michael’s voice commanded the room. Jason jumped as he felt his heart race. He did not work much with Michael, but he had always caused this kind of response inside of Jason. Michael looked at Davenport and then to Jason. “I don’t have secrets with Nikita.”
“But she has secrets,” Jason replied as he moved to table and sat down. He hated double standards. They were hypocritical and Jason was so careful to identify them now that he was out in the real world.
“She doesn’t have secrets,” Michael explained as he sat down at the table and placed his hands on the table. He was controlling everything and that had not changed even without Section. “She just can’t talk about things. You can tell in her eyes that what she can’t speak about is just too painful to talk about.”
Jason pressed his lips together and nodded his head silently.
“I’m not dictating here, Jason. We are working together,” Michael spoke up as he saw the younger man’s head drop. Jason looked at Michael and rubbed his hands along the glass he had taken. “Well, I hope that you know that I have been working hard on Nikita’s system.”
“I never doubted that,” Michael answered as he shifted in his seat and tried to look less in control. That was hard for Michael and it was something that he had struggled a lot with Adam. He guessed he hadn’t found the trick yet when working with others. It was probably why it was good that he worked alone for the most part.
“I’ve had to do some hacking… its how I pay my bills. I wasn’t in Section long enough to build up a fund for myself,” Jason commented as he rubbed his hand along the back of his neck, a sign of still being nervous. “But I’m not finding any clues to where Nikita’s other place may be… what identity she may have used… when she got the place… it’s not in that system at the pseudo-Section.”
Davenport winced and shook his head. “Can we stop calling Nikita’s condo the pseudo-Section? I know that it scary how much it looks like Section… but seriously, we give it more strength by calling it pseudo-Section. We should just call it Nikita’s condo.”
Michael looked at Jason even as his head was slightly nodding up and down with agreement. Jason cleared his throat. “Sorry about that.”
“I was just saying,” Davenport shrugged his shoulders slightly.
Jason exhaled and cleared his throat. “She kept records of every single wrong-doing that she got involved in to make right. It was almost as if she was trying to be Jared in that television show The Pretender… trying to undo the wrongs in the world by doing whatever was needed… either raising money, making a media splash for a place… or catching the bad guys.”
“And it’s only the facts,” Michael rubbed his forehead. He should have never thought that something would be seen in those files.
“And it’s pretty clear to identify that there were a couple small things that were contributed to the angel that was not caused by Nikita. They were safe actions and mostly about raising money… so a copycat did a few things… and there was a lot that didn’t get identified as the angel,” Jason reported as he stared down at the table. “It’s not what we wanted.”
“It helps the cases,” Michael tried to point out the positive. “That’s why she maintained the records. In case the cases could fall apart… it wasn’t for her to take credit. It was the security net in case the prosecutor had a problem or something got screwed up.”
“I haven’t been able to work on the other things, Michael. I have no where to start on where else she could own property. Flying means it could be anywhere in the world,” Jason complained as he had done some searches with the name that she had used for the condo and then realized that it was way too popular.
“The desire to fly may not be to go to that house,” Davenport looked towards Michael. “I have some extra guys by the airport… and some guys at popular hubs in case she would take a bus before flying out.”
“She won’t leave,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “She could have contacted Tom to get her identification figured out without me knowing if she wanted to run. Nikita isn’t going to run.”
“I can’t take that chance,” Davenport declared and Michael rolled his eyes. “I do know her.”
“You don’t know her,” Davenport countered as he shook his head. “We don’t know her at all. Not this version. I don’t know if she even knows herself like this.”
