Adam looked over his shoulder as he walked into the living room where Nikita was sitting on the edge of the couch. He knew that his father was in the kitchen with Walter and Davenport talking about Nikita. He knew too much and he wished that he didn’t know. “Hi, Nikita.”
Nikita lifted a hand slightly and then dropped it. Adam found it difficult to stay with Nikita. It was odd since she really wasn’t talking, but Adam also knew that he had something to say to Nikita. His father would be so upset if he found Adam with Nikita alone right now, but Adam was willing to take the risk. “I’ve been meaning to tell you something…”
Nikita looked right at Adam as she tilted her head. Adam sighed as he moved to the couch and looked at Nikita. He swallowed hard. “Thank you for giving me my father… you didn’t have to do that… but I know that it was a decision that you think that you didn’t have a choice in… that you had to give him back to me… but I know that it was a sacrifice for you… and you gave me my father.”
With was a reaction in Nikita’s eyes. They turned slightly glassy and Nikita blinked her eyes. Adam shifted and leaned into Nikita. “I need you to hear something, Nikita… and I want you to know that I’m not the only one is afraid of this.”
Nikita looked right back at Adam. Adam was tempted to touch Nikita’s hand, but he didn’t. “I’m afraid that you are going to leave.”
Swinging her head from side to side negatively wasn’t enough from Nikita. Adam closed his eyes and tried to accept the gesture. But it didn’t feel right. “Nikita… I’ve heard them talk… about the identification so you can fly…”
Nikita pulled her legs up towards her chest and hugged them as she continued to shake her head. Finally her mouth parted. “No…”
“Nikita, if you can get on any plane… you could disappear without us knowing,” Adam’s voice choked up as he sat down on his hands and looked at Nikita. “I don’t want you to leave… I know that it hasn’t been easy for you here… but if you leave… it will get so much worse.”
“I’m not going to leave,” Nikita spoke and Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know that, Nikita.”
“Why?” Nikita whispered.
“Because you always look like you are so far away from here. You never talk about what is stuck in your mind… and I know that it isn’t easy… but if you would leave… my dad would be like you are right now… just not the man I know he is… you aren’t who you should be,” Adam’s voice cracked again.
He could see that his words were getting to Nikita and for one split second, Adam was afraid that he was going to cause Nikita to get angry again. But instead, Nikita reached for his shoulders and Adam moved away slightly so he could pull his hands out from underneath him. Nikita grabbed one hand with both of her hands and bowed her head down. “I promise you, Adam… I’m not going to run.”
That one word, the word run, which Adam was afraid to said, meant so much. It meant that Nikita heard him loud and clear. It was what Adam wanted to believe that Nikita would say, but it mattered that she spoke it.
“I’ll do anything to make it easier for you to stay,” Adam declared as he allowed Nikita to squeeze his hands. “I never want to put pressure on you… but I know that you didn’t get to be happy much in Section… but those are the things that my dad told me the most about… those stolen moments when you got to see a Brady Bunch marathon… or when you first tried Pop Rocks…”
Nikita shook her head slightly back and forth and swallowed hard. It was a couple moments here and there that Adam knew her about. “Adam…”
“No,” Adam interrupted as he shook his head. “If I have talked too much about my sister being out there… I’ll stop right now… because I need you to be better… so my dad can be even a better version than what he is… so I can have a family… and you can start to worry about if I’m getting good grades or about Sally May Joe who might have a crush on me… or worry about me getting my driver’s permit in a few years… I want that… and I’ll stop all other stuff… “
Nikita swallowed back a sob. She then dropped her hands to touch Adam’s face. She stared at him. “I promise you Adam… I am not going to run out of here. This is the place where the people I need are. I know this.”
Adam couldn’t help it. He hugged Nikita tightly and he felt her crying against his shoulder while he hugged her tighter. “You know… my dad has always told me that when I have a problem it is best to just start talking… even if it doesn’t make any sense… that just the process of talking, even if it isn’t about the problem, makes it easier to talk about the problem…”
Nikita squeezed her eyes shut as she heard the wise words that Adam was saying right now. She felt the words going right thru her entire body because it was something that she knew that she had to find a way to start to do but she had just been so afraid of finding the right place to start.
“And my dad is a great listener when I start rambling on about things that may be problems… and he said that he learned how to be a great listener because of you… and I think maybe if you can just start talking… even if it is just about the sheets on the bed… or the water being too hot… or telling him that you aren’t going to run either… you’ll be able to talk about the other things…” Adam continued to ramble. Nikita looked up at the ceiling and exhaled as she composed herself. Slowly she unraveled her arms and pulled away from Adam.
“You are a very smart boy,” Nikita declared and Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I just wanted to let you know what works for me.”
“You are smart because you listen to your father,” Nikita nudged Adam’s chin. “I’ll try, Adam.”
“I just want you to stay with us,” Adam declared as he leaned back slightly. Nikita looked at him and Adam smiled. “And thank you for promising to stay.”
Nikita nodded her head as she rubbed a finger down Adam’s arm.
Now she had to just do what was right.
