“You got quiet,” Michael spoke as he eased Nikita into his arms later that evening after everyone else had left and Adam had gone to bed. Nikita sighed while in Michael’s arms, but did not respond. He turned his head slightly to look down at Nikita to make sure that she hadn’t drifted to sleep.

She had taken a nap in Michael’s arms for about forty minutes before Davenport had come over for lunch, but still, it had been a long day.

Nikita was awake and looking at the television where the end of White Christmas was starting. Michael kissed her head. “Kita, I just want to make sure that you are ok. You got quiet really quick today. Around dinner.”

Nikita turned to look at Michael as she smiled gently. “I love that you care.”

“Kita,” Michael whispered as he lifted his hand to trace her hairline. Nikita looked at him and Michael sighed. “This was too much.”

“No,” Nikita shook her head slightly. “I’m just… processing things.”

Michael didn’t know what he thought about that statement. He knew that it was a lot more than being ok. It meant that Nikita was thinking to herself and not letting others in with what she was thinking. He was about to speak to that when Nikita touched Michael’s chin. “I’ve had no bad memories, Michael. That’s the first thing, right?”

Michael wasn’t sure what the answer was. He wasn’t sure that he wanted Nikita to just not think about the bad memories, but he didn’t want to get her so lost in them that she couldn’t function. Michael swallowed against the lump in his throat. “So what are you thinking about?”

“How I can’t remember ever having a Christmas,” Nikita answered with a dull voice. She shifted her body and leaned against Michael. “I had to have some sort of Christmas. But I was on the streets with Roberta. There couldn’t have been much of a Christmas.”

“What brought on those thoughts?” Michael inquired and Nikita chuckled. “I never had cranberry sauce before.”

Michael couldn’t help but laugh. He shook his head from side and took a long deep breath to compose himself. “Walter made homemade cranberry sauce. It was nothing like I remember cranberry sauce. When I was a kid, it came out of a can and it had ridges on it.”

Nikita sat up and stared at Michael. He saw her eyebrows knit closer together as she was deep in thought. Finally, her face relaxed and she tossed her head from side to side. “No… no ridges thing…. I don’t think ever had cranberries… except cranberry juice.”

“I’ll have to get a can and show you,” Michael gently replied as he tilted his head to look at Nikita. There was a twinkle in her eye as she looked at him that he had missed for a long time. He couldn’t remember the last time he saw it and it absolutely warmed his heart.

“Kita…” Michael whispered as he touched her face and he felt a spark there. Nikita leaned into his touch, feeling the luxury of how it felt to have Michael touch her. Nikita’s eyes closed gently as she shifted and exhaled with a pleased little sigh that verged on being a purr.

When Nikita opened her eyes, Michael pulled his hand away from her cheek and lowered it to her shoulder. His mind knew that right now wasn’t the time for them to sink into lust, but he also knew that it was ok to kiss her like she deserved to be kiss and in a way that he ached to kiss her.

They drifted towards each other. It seemed slow to them, but it was fast in actuality. They paused for a second to stare into each other’s eyes as their noses rubbed barely against each other. Nikita tilted her head to the side and her eyes closed as her lips pressed against Michael’s.

The small barrier that had been there shattered as Michael’s lips eased Nikita’s lips open. His arms surrounded Nikita and held her to his body as his tongue slowly twisted into her mouth and then he tentatively pulled back to only find that Nikita was moving her tongue towards his.

Nikita arched her back as she felt the kiss deepen in a way that told her that she was alive and well. It excited her and allowed her to feel the love and passion that she only felt a few times in her life, and often it was by Michael like this that he showed her that she was a living being. She moaned into Michael’s mouth as she met him with the same pace that he was giving her. She felt his hands tangle in her hair and she knew that he loved her.

Just as frenzied as the kiss started, it ended as they parted and opened their eyes. Both of their bodies knew that it was just enough to give them a hint of what was to come for them but also knew that it wasn’t right. Nikita smiled gently as she realized that it wasn’t the right time in her mind. She turned her back and leaned into Michael’s embraced.

There were words that she wanted to say, but they were held for now. They weren’t words related to the past. They were words of thanks and words of love. Michael already knew them and she relaxed further into Michael’s arms, knowing that this was the perfect way to end this very special first Christmas.
