...but in the situation you're referring to, yes, you should have been treated to a free lunch. If you're spending some of your own time to meet with someone about a project, even if they're paying you for said project, you should get paid for lunch at the very least.

If you don't get treated, I'm not sure that translates into a situation where you shouldn't trust the guy, but you should look for ways to charge him more for the project you're doing.

I recall the time I was going to ask The Guth to do me a favor. I took him out to lunch and paid. And that was potentially a dangerous situation since I've seen The Guth eat four chicken sandwiches in one sitting. But, it was the proper thing to. And The Guth was merciful and didn't order large quantities of food.
