It has a lot to do with contracts. It doesn't matter when an episode was taped - it's when it was aired that determines which season it falls in. From Season 2 on Wayne was contracted to appear in every episode. Since I believe they receive royalty payments when a episode airs that would violate the contract with Wayne since he's receive no payment for that episode.
