Unfortunately, the audience didn't find Greg hilarious.

I, too, attended both shows, although I prefer to watch the comedian's reaction to the second show rather than the audience--to see how (or if) they deal with the change in atmosphere). The late 10 p.m. show is always the hardest one to do, no matter where you are or WHO you are... even the esteemed Mr. Proops. By that time, the patrons are usually drunk or tired, especially at the end of the work week. Greg did acknowledge that, though-- "I know, while I sit around smoking weed and playing on the Internet, you people are out working..."

Wow. He smokes dope. What a revelation! Hell, I thought he should've brought some for the audience to loosen 'em up.

The first comedian of the evening, Eric, did what is called "hack." There's a great FAQ on hack comedy on the internet somewhere, if anyone is curious to look it up and learn how stereotypical the jokes are in hack. The comparison/contrast jokes, the blatantly obvious questions done just so the comedian can segue into his next bits... it's hack, and that's what Eric delivered. From start to finish. As a comedian myself, I have to say that it was a damned shame to watch somebody do that to their career.

The second guy, Gary, went for the "nice guy" cute comedy, with that "I like you! Will you like me back?" attitude that, while charming and a big relief from Eric's performance, resulted in some pretty poor banter with the audience. There were numerous times where he could've taken a joke one or two steps ahead, but just settled for the laughs and moved on. He was a 6'6" cutie, though, and his cookie material rocked!

And then... there was Greg. Come on, we know Greg. That's why we love him. But the early show was DEFINITELY the one to show up for, because the people were looser and more into the slams against Prez Bush, McCartney's wife, Iraq, etc. What, he would dare to insult the leader of the free world? Damn straight.

Show #2 was like (to use a cliche) Death Valley at high noon. I was next to the stage and had a good view of the audience for both performances, and I've got to tell you... his comment during the show about people looking at him like the RCA Victor dog was accurate.

Those people obviously didn't read the wall. "COMEDY" is clearly there in big purple letters. They must have mistaken Greg for someone giving a speech, because the majority of the audience sat there with a glazed TV-watching look like mindless dweebs who forgot to borrow some brain cells from the neighbors before they attended Greg's show.
