The only thing I don't get is it seems like most of
the people commenting are in my age range, too young
to remember much of the early and mid 70s.

I've read an article or two about the show, and it discussed that very fact. Many of the funniest commentators from "I Love the 80s" are back for "I Love the 70s." Michelle, you're right that some of them are around your age, and a bit young to be commenting on all of the 70s. For example, Hal Sparks said in an interview that he was a baby for some of the time that they are talking about, but they wanted him to be in the show anyway, because he's funny. I think VH1 appreciates the humorous comments they get from people like him, Michael Ian Black, Mo Rocca, etc. so much that they keep them on, even if they have no idea what they're talking about. ;)

I also like Hal Spark's comments on the 70's shows - he and Michael Ian Black are very deadpan!! I wonder if VH1 tells them what they'll be talking about on the show, then the person can think of some comments. Otherwise they might be doing what I am when I watch the show: 'Oooohhh, I remember THAT....'

Those are my two favorites, too! The show is not scripted, it's just the people making it up as they go along (improvising, if you will). :) In the article I read, they said that there was a special appearance in Borders in NYC with Hal Sparks, Michael Ian Black, and Mo Rocca to kick off "I Love the 70s," and that they did some commentary live for the audience there. For example, they would play a piece of video about something from the 70s, and then stop the tape, and the guys would just start talking. It was apparently hilarious...wish I could have been there!
