Subject: Brad Sherwood and Dave Bushnell in Cleveland

Ah, I forgot to do a little report on this past weekend's shows with Brad and Dave. They were in Cleveland, Ohio from Friday, September 19th to Sunday, September 21st doing shows at the Improvisation Comedy Club there. I only went to the Sunday night show, where they gave one performance; on Saturday, I understand that they did three! Talk about a busy evening.

There were three stand-up comedians that came on before Brad and Dave--the M.C. (a rather large man circumference-wise), another guy (somewhat smaller in size but overaverage in the waist), and a third comedian (a bit overweight but not bad). When Brad took the stage and introduced his partner, Dave, he also cracked a joke about how each comedian that came up on stage was progressively smaller. In case you don't know, Dave is both short and slim.

I didn't take notes and it's been almost a week, not to mention that I'd just been on a long-ass drive from Maine to the Midwest, so excuse the lack of details on the performance. They went and played Superheroes, Sound Effects, that game with a horn/bell where the improvisers act out the life of a married couple, a rap number with a middle-aged man from the audience ("M.C. Rob"), and a few other games.

They also did Translation, where Brad was translating an explanation of someone's job into sign language. This one gave them the most difficulty, as nobody seemed to have an interesting job. At one point Brad was standing in line with my table and was all but begging me to speak up (he knows that I'm a Navy photographer), but I couldn't do it; I was very exhausted and I didn't want to be a "ringer" in the audience. I also had no desire to be onstage that night; my time in the spotlight was Monday, when I attended the Improv's stand-up comedy auditions. Brad finally settled on two women who allegedly sold sex toys. Allegedly.

For those of you who've never seen Dave, he is a strong second banana in the act, and he unselfishly lets Brad take the announcing duties and prepare the games. He is a very solid improvisor, albeit a quiet one.

And of course, we all know what Brad can do with improv!
