Subject: Well, it was a combination of Jay steering & what Drew was advertising ...
In reply to: pat 's message, "So what DID he talk about?" on 07/29/03 5:20am

Drew wasn't there to advertise Whose Line, his show, etc.
He was there due to him being part of that Pepsi 'win a billion' thing.

That was what they showed in the little commercial clip before he came on, and that's what they talked about in the latter half of the interview. And I've noticed that most people, when there for one project, they deal with one project.

In this case it was even more pronounced because although Jay normally will start off with some questions of 'what are you doing now?' he'd been dwelling on the Bob Hope thing all night (he did a long talk about how wonderful Bob was for half the time he usually does that 'headlines' thing). Drew was from the same town as Bob Hope. Drew is also a standup comedian - which is what Jay was going on about Bob being so nice to other standups. So that ended up taking up the part where he usually asks ' what you've been up to'.

Then the bugging him about his girlfriend - well, the whole questions about personal life etc. are always part of that interview. And as a regular watcher of Jay *L* the first half of the interview is nearly always nothing to do with what they're doing, or what they're here to tell the world about. The first half of the interview is always about their personal life, what's big in the news, them joking around. Then the second half is advertising whatever they were there to advertise.

That's about how it is every night with him, especially with that first interview. First bit is all about their personal life, what's going on, general chatter. Then they go to commercial, and when they come back they talk about whatever movie, tv show, etc. they're involved with. In this case, the Pepsi billion dollar thingy cause that's what Drew was there to advertise.

So all in all? It was a pretty standard interview on the Tonight show. Even with the incursion of the Bob Hope thing - not surprised that Drew didn't have something to come snappily off of that, it was only a recent thing & therefore still a shock in many people's mind in the industry I'm sure.

But really? That is what the tonight show is about. Look at entertainment mags and how much they focus on 'ooh what are the stars doing' - that's part of what Jay does as much as help promote shows *L* So it is a real topic.

I know what you mean though - it sometimes makes Jay look like a bad interviewer. But then he seems to get people to open up a lot more than they normally would sometimes - so it might just all be a cunning plan ;)
