I regret to say this, but I found a source on the web that had an interview with JKR. She mentions that she really did kill him. She mentions that she cried and told her husband that. I should also mention that I found another source, this time being an interview with either the publisher or JKR. Technically, Sirius death was to make Harry Potter's realization of his power stronger. Not only that, but it was to make Harry Potter more capable of killing (how else is he going to get Voldemort?). The second source also mentioned that Sirius won't be coming back. I would have liked the fatherly figure to have Harry live with him instead!
