First of all we know for a fact that Severus Snape, if you move the letters around, is an anagram of Perseus Evans, and that Evans was Lily's maiden name. I wondered if they were related. This is my theory on Snape's family: Let's assume Snape's father's name was Perseus Evans, and that he was distantly related to Muggles (Lily's family). Snape's mother was probably a Pure-blood. Snape was originally named after his father, so his name was Perseus Evans II. Maybe after he was born, his mother found out about the Muggle Evanses and wanted no connection, however distantly. So the family took on her maiden name, Snape. We also saw thru the Pensieve that his father was kind of an abusive man, so maybe when Snape went to Hogwarts he enrolled as Severus, maybe after an uncle or his grandfather or something. The relation with Muggles would also explain why Snape was so hostile towards Lily when she tried to help him in OotP. Also, it could be the reason Snape joined Voldemort. He was ashamed of being related to Muggles, and also he wanted accepetance whereas his father had only shown him abuse.
