Subject: Two Steps Back

I know it was
Astonishingly odd
For me to back out
Of your embrace;
The surprised questions
Blinking in your eyes
Marked your amazement--
But it was I
Who acted ill
This eve past,
Not you.
In the whirl
of the fleeing moments,
I had forgotten
Your expressed desire
For us to remain
As two,
Rather than come together
As one.
It was the all-too-sudden
Realization that I
Had broken my vow
To honor your disecting wishes
Which caused the
Controled retreat,
The two-step escape
From your all-too-pleasant embrace.
