Subject: The Abandoned World v.1.5: What We Lost (dragonriders of pern)

AVIAS succeeded. Thread was no longer a threat to Pern, and so dragons and their riders were no longer needed. The Weyrs were disbanded, the Riders and Dragons dispersing throughout Pern to live normal lives. At first, they were almost worshipped by the normal people of Pern, but it was soon discovered that the dragonriders were unable to hold normal jobs, because they only specialized in protecting Pern from thread. They were either unemployed and dependant on charity, or doing jobs on an inconsistent basis, hardly earning enough to live on. It did not take long for the people of Pern to forget that these people they now held in contempt had once risked their lives to keep them safe from a worldwide threat.

Soon, the dragons and their riders were widely hated and looked down upon as lazy, incompetent, cursed. They were turned away at inns and Holds, sneered at and loathed for being useless. There came a day when the Gold Farameth flew, and Bronzes and their riders came from miles and miles to fly her, for it was the first time a Gold had risen to fly for almost two Turns. Farameth killed two Wherrys from a nearby farm. That was the proverbial last straw, as far as the villagers were concerned. The keeper came at a hurried pace, and proceeded to do the worst thing he could have done. He flung a stone at Farameth. Never mind that it missed widely - the fact was that it had been meant to hit.

Dragon riders across Pern found out about it within minutes, and they called a meeting, and had a vote. It was decided then that they would leave. All the dragonriders of Pern would leave the Holds and holders and so-called common folk, and they would start a new Weyr where they would begin anew, without any of those who had turned on their saviors so easily.

They left the Northern continent, and flew South, until they had passed beyond what even the most extensive maps contained, and then even further. They crossed another continent, and an ocean, and found in the far, far South, a new continent, smaller than Northern or Southern, but still big, big enough. They found a place to set up a Weyr, in the deep, deep bowl of an extinct volcano which towered miles into the air. This was to be their new home, and they named their new home Teilan, and the Weyr, naturally, was Teilan Weyr.

That was over 400 Turns ago, and Pern has been peaceful ever since. Thread, dragonriders, and dragons are myths, bedtime stories told to children. The old Weyrs are ruins, and flits are rarely seen in the modern Pern, having died out or followed their larger cousins to Teilan. It was so, and the world existed, blithely unaware of the flaw in AVIAS' plan; the Red Star was knocked off orbit, yes, but the powerful pull of the galaxy's huge star was more than strong enough to pull the Red Star back in orbit - but this time, it was an orbit that would take it closer to Pern, more often.

A day came when the Red Star's malevolent gleam washed over the world, and Thread fell not long after. The modern world was unprepared for the ancient threat, having long ago spread beyond the protective stone Holds and Halls. The people were decimated, cities and towns destroyed. Thread swept over Pern, destroying and killing all in its' path, but being devoured by grub once in the ground.

It reached Teilan Weyr, and the dragons were ready. Wings flew and fought the thread, they fought for hours, tiring, but the Thread kept falling. Fatigued dragons were unable to move as quickly as they had been able, and were scored by the Thread. Eventually, even the Weyrlings had to join in the fight, for the older dragons and riders were exhausted, their numbers depleted, and all but five of the new Weyrlings were killed by the end of the Fall, including the one Queen of the clutch.

Time passed, and the senior Queen clutched, and the Weyr moved on. The Red Star never left the horizon for long, falling week after week for many turns, before having a Long Interval of three hundred Turns. When it returned, the dragonriders were prepared, and the Red Star stayed near Pern for another three hundred Turns, and people and dragons adapted and flourished under the harsh conditions.

Now, 1600 years after leaving Pern, the Red Star looms on the horizon again, and Teilan Weyr and the newer one that had only just been created, because Teilan was overcrowded, a Weyr called Serun Weyr, have to rush to get ready for Threadfall, and can only hope that the Clutches are hatched, and Weyrlings trained before the next Fall, for both are at half their usual numbers, due to the splitting. There is hope, however, in the new clutches, for evolution has been occurring, and new colors are appearing with each new generation of dragons.
