~!~ The tiniest snap of a fallen twig cracks nearby, a shadow blurred across the still behind a tangle of woven vines and brush. Half silenced with a shiver, the slender, creeping mare inches from behind, soft tread betraying her at the sharp crack of the tiny stick, the unmistakable sound of a nervous snort in fear of being lapped in proof sharply curled from the uneven depths, patterned with broken light from above. Russet figure starting nervously, nearby the great steed and two others, the mare of skin and bone whimpers soundlessly, helplessly, dark eyes and tips of mane sparking, fire brandished across her thin side in desperate longing, bloodied hope. He was close by; she could see him as she could the others, she could taste his scent. Silent hooves pressed firmly into the wet, mossy turf, muffled breaths taking in the sweet scent of pine and moist air, she trembles uncontrollably, starved for a piece of anything to eat, a single blade of grass, the faintest wisp of him. Moisture clinging in transparent beads to her long forelock, slender cheek, a bejeweled veil of tangled entirely of glistening rain and stars, the tenderly red mare shivers uncontrollably, stiff with the chill of early morning still, dew soaking her as it did everything else in its wake, rolling muscles of fog in the form of waves drifting across each barren meadow, suddenly tearing everything to life. Tightened limbs stretching to motion, action tugging her forward, she slowly breaks through the tangled, snarling intricate pattern of meshwork veins of foliage, rolling vines tumbling and creaking as they snag on the jagged edges of her thin frame, snatching her mane, clawing the breathless strands of pallid tail. The tiniest stain of a tear trickles soundlessly down her copper cheek, tracing a line that had long been used for a river of endless tears, each further carving away her stony face until a canyon bled from her dark eyes to jowl, etching out an endless gorge, hardening her timid face with each further line. She had cried for him for a hundred, a thousand years, all in vain; salty tears choked, blending with rainwater, they show no contrast between them to the eye, but had one kissed her cheek, had relished the pain leaking cherry down the side of her face, they would have tasted the salt, known the difference. Shivering to a ragged halt, breath frayed around the corners, her thin sides flutter for want of air, each rib traced and visible through the thin drape of crimson hide cloaking the little remaining within. Parched lips cracked with dried passion, sweetened papaya of her voice chiseled to nothing, she remains farther from him than the others, one solitary ear pivoting atop her russet skull with nervous fear, tender voice plushed with loneliness and terror. ~!~ I didn’t mean to fall in love with you, Equi. ~!~ Voice rustled like paper, curling as brittle leaves blown across the lips of the dry wind, she trembles fearfully, fiery sight blazing with hope, mistrust, love, knowing she could rid herself of nothing – her heart snagged everything it could, starving for life as her weak figure starved for nourishment, neither of which could find what they were desparatly searching for. ~!~
