Length of deal key for Belfour

By MIKE ZEISBERGER -- Toronto Sun
Hockey likely was not the top priority on the mind of goaltender Ed Belfour during his recent vacation in the tropics.

It is now.

Belfour, who was scheduled to return to Toronto yesterday from his siesta in the sunny south, becomes an unrestricted free agent at midnight on June 30 unless the Maple Leafs can come to an agreement with the veteran goaltender.

The clock certainly is ticking on the two sides, who have just a week to find a resolution.

And while Belfour's agent, Ron Salcer, said last night he is "hopeful" a deal can be worked out, there are several issues that remain unresolved.

"Term would be one of them,"Salcer said.

Belfour understandably is believed to be seeking the security of a multi-year pact -- one unconfirmed rumour making the rounds suggests he is asking for a three-year contract worth $6 million US per season -- but the uncertainty of the NHL's coming labour situation might make the Leafs gun shy at handing out a long-term deal to a 39-year-old goaltender. To date, the Leafs have 12 players under contract for 2004-05 for a total of just over $36 million.

Both Salcer and Leafs general manager John Ferguson confirmed discussions are ongoing.

"Eddie has very much enjoyed playing for the Leafs in front of the Toronto fans,"Salcer said. "And playing for Pat Quinn has been great. We remain hopeful."

Quinn will be Belfour's coach with Team Canada for the coming World Cup, but has no idea if the goalie will still be a Leaf come the September tournament.

"(The Team Canada) situation should not be a factor in his decision,"Quinn said yesterday. "Whatever happens happens."
