Pittsburgh Media Scoops and Gossip

Nuttings strike again -- Honus, 19:38:53 09/26/11 Mon [38]
Nuttings started Pirates Report a few years ago to generate positive coverage about their perennial loser baseball team. They hired John Perrotto, kicked him out after one season. Too negative. They hired Paul Ladewski from Chicago to replace him. Ladewski lasted almost two seasons. They told him on Monday that's he done. Not positive enough.

Maybe the coverage would be more positive if the team didn't lose all the damn time?

As a straight up question, does anybody proof TV news scripts before they're used? I've heard several really odd things lately that a print outlet would seem to have fixed before deadline - one ( Not a direct quote, but the context is right) " a description of " a tragic event that could have been terrible" and another about a dog receiving " a million and a half injections in each (foot)pad" Is this local copy, someone localizing wire feeds, or interns on the loose?

I like to read Dejan K's columns just for that moment where he promotes himself. He doesn't disappoint. This was in Wednesday's column about Sidney Crosby.

By the time Crosby finally got around to unlacing those skates, after his formal session with the media, I mentioned to him that it looked like he was having fun out there.

"Yeah," he said, looking up. "I missed it."

See, he talked to him alone AFTER the "formal" session with the media. Just him. One on one. All alone. Nobody else. Exclusive access. How else could he come up with that pedestrian quote. Oh, he's something -- and I'm not talking about Crosby.

I stare at the four books on the stool by my reading chair. The one on top calls to me to finish it, but I have laundry to do, a tomato stake to right, a pond to dredge, a dog to walk, a dishwasher to unload until, finally, my reward is some hammock time with Marcel Proust's "Within a Budding Grove."

This was the intro text on the P-G's Web site a few hours after the quake...

The earthquake struck at 1:51 p.m. near Richmond, Va., and felt as far north as Vermont. Some buildings in and around Pittsburgh were evacuated. Allegheny County's 911 center was swamped with calls, and a number of buildings were evacuated. On the South Side, Steelers players were outside practicing and were unaware that anything had happened.

Yes, I know there was very little damage, so we don't have to go overboard on the coverage. But really, do we REALLY have to know that our much-beloved Steelers are safe and sound?
This obsession with all things Steelers must stop.

Is the Post-Gazette closed for the day?

It's almost 10 a.m., and there's not a word about Sidney Crosby. (Late last night, the team released a statement about his health.)

For the record, I do not work in journalism, and I have very little regard for the Trib.

More than anything, I'm just disappointed in the undeniable decline of the Post-Gazette as Pittsburgh's paper of record.

Steelers Practice Report Policy

The Pittsburgh Steelers' PR department would like to remind all media of the following policies regarding covering the team's practices.

-- Media members are prohibited at any time from reporting which players take repetitions with the first, second or third team, etc., as well as how many repetitions players take during practice.

-- Media members are prohibited from blogging or tweeting during practice.

-- Media members are prohibited from reporting anything that takes place at practice while practice is ongoing. This includes a reporter calling, texting or instant messaging his or her place of employment or another media outlet, or posting information on any website.

-- Media does have the right to report what they are told by coaches or players.

-- Media members are prohibited from socializing with players or coaches at any time during practice.

-- While we understand the importance of breaking news, our expectation is that all media that cover the team will respect club policies that close walk-thru's and offseason workouts to the media, and that media will not resort to alternate means of recording those sessions even from a remote location.

-- All media must remain in the areas designated for media access by the Steelers' PR department while attending practice.

-- Only local media may attend Steelers practices that are closed to the public. National and out of town media may request access to open locker room media sessions and press conferences, but will not have access to practices.

-- Interns working for media organizations may only access the Steelers locker room during open locker room media sessions if they have an active working function. Interns are prohibited from entering the Steelers' locker room for the purpose of observing or "assisting" full-time media employees.

-- While guests at Steelers headquarters, media may only interview Steelers players, coaches and staff in areas designated by the club's PR department. At no time will media be permitted to interview members of the Steelers' organization in the lobby area or parking lots without prior consent from Steelers PR.

-- Electronic media must follow the NFL's Non-Game Day Online Content Policy that was distributed prior to the season and is posted in the Steelers' media workroom.

-- Once the portion of practice that photographers may shoot has been shut down, no cameras will be permitted filming anything but interviews on the field (coordinators/assistant coaches) or in the locker room (players). No video footage or photographs of players or coaches leaving the practice field is permitted.

-- Only video of interviews is permissible inside the Steelers' locker room. Still photography is prohibited inside the Steelers' locker room.

-- The Steelers reserve the right to adjust and amend all club media policies without prior notice.

Media that continue to violate club policies may have their access to the team's practice facility or on game days subject to review.

The above media policies are designed to make sure that while covering the Steelers, no media outlet gains an advantage over others, while also protecting information that could compromise the club's competitive advantage. Access to Steelers practices that are closed to the public is a privilege, but with that privilege come certain expectations.

The Steelers' PR department would be happy to further explain our media policies to all media with questions. We look forward to continuing to work with you in the future so that the Steelers and media covering the team can continue to enjoy a mutually beneficial working relationship.

Their breaking news summary of the Heinz Field filming mentioned that Rock Star, sorry, I meant Mayor Luke was booed because he can't kick, which was why he was there. However, Sunday's full story! Everything from the Saturday story was in there except Rock Star getting booed. Hmmmm wonder if one of Luke's roadies called to complain.

With resources shrinking, why does the Post-Gazette continue to feel it's necessary to cover the local club pro in their seemingly never-ending string of summer tournaments?

The prize money is minimal and the same guys seem to always win. I began to lose interest in Gerry Dulac's coverage of the latest tournament in Farmington this morning as soon as I read John Aber won. John Aber, Bob Ford, or a short list of 2-3 other local pros, always win.

Is this a case of Dulac coming up with a reason to get out of the office during the Steelers' off season, or does Jerry Micco actually think anyone other than next of kin cares about this stuff?

I'll add that I am not an anti-golfer. I play (not very well), enjoy watching golf on tv and reading about events that amount to something. But, reading about John Aber winning another tornament, complete with quotes such as "He's good." (no kidding!) doesn't make the cut anymore.

It's a nice drive to Nemacolin this time of year, but as far as readers' interest, I'm not sure it's worth the price of a tank of gasoline.

Dave Molinari and Shelly Anderson were assigned to do the game story and sidebar.

Ron Cook showed up to write a column.

Clerk/fan Seth Rorabaugh was there to do his usual in-game blog.

Dejan Kovacevic ("DK"), who does whatever he wants to do, also showed up and did a blog.

That's two blogs on the same regular season hockey game.

That's FIVE people covering the same regular season hockey game for the same company.

With a short staff, that's an incredible waste of resources.

Was Jerry Micco unaware of this? Or did Jerry Micco approve this?

Either way, Jerry Micco should be fired. He is utterly incompetent.

With newsrooms shrinking but editors demanding reporters still cover the same amount, and even more than before in most cases, the inevitable has been happening. Just take a look at this from Friday's PG online. This is astounding.

Correction published 6/23/2011: South Xtra: The Elizabeth Forward High School boys swimming team won four WPIAL Class AA swimming championships from 1993 through 1996.Those years were incorrect in a story in last week's South Xtra sports section about the Warriors baseball team, which won a WPIAL title this year

Correction published 6/23/2011: Arts & Entertainment: Melissa Hiller's talk at the Andy Warhol Museum about the work of artist Helene Aylon took place last week. A story Wednesday gave an incorrect date.

Correction published 6/23/2011: Business: A chart that accompanied Wednesday's story on changing wages in the Pittsburgh region should have shown dollars per hour. For example, where the chart listed $10,000, it should have been $10 per hour.

Correction published 6/23/2011: Sports: Retired NFL player Joe DeLamielleure has never had surgery and does not walk with a limp. The Associated Press reported erroneous information in a story Tuesday.

Correction published 6/23/2011: North Xtra: The name of North Hills School District school board member Ed Wielgus was misspelled in a story about the district's 2011-12 budget in last week's PG North Xtra.

Correction published 6/22/2011: Local News: City Calendar. The Schenley Heights Community Festival will begin at noon Saturday at Robert E. Williams Memorial Park. The time was incorrect in an item yesterday.

Correction published 6/22/2011: Local News: Gregory J. Podlucky left Jones Brewing Co. in 1989 and has had no affiliation with the company since then. Jones Brewing has had no business relationship with Le-Nature's Inc. An article Tuesday on Mr. Podlucky's guilty plea to charges stemming from his role at Le-Nature's mischaracterized his past relationship with Jones Brewing.

Correction published 6/22/2011: Arts & Entertainment: U.S. Navy Adm. David Farragut's victory at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864 occurred after the Union capture of New Orleans in the Civil War. David McCullough's "The Greater Journey" incorrectly linked those events and the error was repeated in Sunday's review of his book.

Correction published 6/22/2011: Business: A brief about Hobby Lobby Stores coming to Robinson had incorrect information on the site the chain is moving into. It is a former Giant Eagle.

Correction published 6/22/2011: Health and Science: Joel Stiles, the late director of the National Resource for Biomedical Supercomputing, was a neurobiologist. He was misidentified in a headline Monday.

Correction published 6/22/2011: Portfolio: The "Biography" submission by entertainer Jimmy Sapienza on June 10 about broadcaster John Cigna contained an incorrect email address for Mr. Sapienza. He can be reached at jimmy.sapienza@verizon.net.

That online radio station is already cutting back. They fired Chris Mack and eliminated four hours of daily programming. At their best, they're getting 1,000 listeners per hour and generating little or no revenue.

The Trib kicked their butts on this story. Gorman had a relevant column. P-G column was a sleepy effort from Collier on the Boston-Vancouver hockey series.

Solid win for the Trib and Kovacevic had nothing to do with it.

Keith Briscoe, exiled executive editor at the Beaver County Times, has set up a Web site touting all his *cough cough* accomplishments.
One of the gems he writes: "A media organization is best, I believe, when it genuinely reflects its markets � the diversity and divisions, the follies and frolics of the people we serve."
He and Buncher turned up their noses at Beaver County residents and tried to tell them what they wanted. The dynamic duo NEVER understood the Beaver County market and didn't care to.
Go to www.kbriscoe13.com for a good laugh. Take a look at the special sections he takes credit for. Those sections were planned and executed by the talented staff that he and Buncher laid off.
He takes credit for a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo...I'm sure the photographer would have something to say about that.
He touts the national awards that The Times won, but ignores the dozens of state and western PA awards won, because they were beneath his notice, to the point where he banned the staff from entering the state competitions. They weren't good enough.
Finally, isn't it interesting that Briscoe has to list Lisa Reese, CONTROLLER of The Times, as a reference...what about Buncher?

This is incredible. Do they think this is funny? This isn't some celebrity issue or the same as poking fun at Ed Rendell's girth. It's unbelievable that someone thought this should be the lead item.

We know it's not uncommon to pack on a few pounds during the long, gray winter months in Pittsburgh.

But we would think someone such as accused cop killer Richard Poplawski -- with endless time on his hands and access to weights and a recreation yard as he whiles away the hours at the Allegheny County Jail -- wouldn't be sporting such an expanded midsection these days.

Poplawski, 24, is expected to go on trial this month for the April 4, 2009, slayings of Pittsburgh police Officers Eric G. Kelly, Stephen J. Mayhle and Paul J. Sciullo II. He appeared last week at jury selection in Dauphin County with a noticeably substantial gut practically bursting from his white dress shirt. He appears to weigh a good bit more than he did at an Oct. 21, 2009, court hearing.

Back then, Poplawski sported a quite full beard, which has since been shaved off, revealing an additional chin or two.

In both instances, Poplawski was escorted by Allegheny County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Piscitelli - who, unlike Poplawski, appears to be avoiding a future audition for NBC's "The Biggest Loser."

Pennsylvania law dictates only that jail food must be "nutritionally adequate" and "well balanced." It doesn't say whether the meals -- delivered on plastic, partitioned trays -- must be healthful or tasty.

So most inmates supplement their diets with fare from the jail commissary. Think candy bars, Moon Pies and Ho Hos.

Makes you wonder just how many trans fats and complex carbs Poplawski is consuming. If his trial drags on longer than the predicted four weeks, we might all want to buy stock in Hostess and Frito Lay.

Paul Zeise, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beat writer had the following headline to his article about Saturday nights game:

PIRATES 3, METS 2

Pirates improve to 31-32 with Saturday win

The Pirates rallied in the second and used a two-run double by Andrew McCutchen in the third to take an insurmountable lead.

Here is the definition of a word he used. If Paul was correct in the using this word, I'm surprised the Mets didn't throw in the towel knowing they could not possibly win the game!!
