Houston Motorsports Park opens for racing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, February 03, 2004

Houston Motorsports Park started a new racing tradition in NE Houston as it opened its 1/8th mile concrete dragstrip up to racecars for the first time on January 31, 2004. The track which is located just south of Beltway 8 on N. Lake Houston Parkway opened to rave reviews from the over 5000 spectators and 344 racers. Graham and David Baker owners of the track were all smiles as the day long racing went off without a hitch. Racers were treated to good side by side racing, excellent food, and t-shirts commemorating the event.

The day was also filled with a huge surprise as Jesse James and members of West Coast Chopper's and Monster Garage along with camera crews from AOL came to the track so Jesse could try his hand at mastering the new facility. James signed numerous autographs and then crawled inside a 41 Willy's to test his skills on the new racing surface. Race fans lined the fences 6 deep to get a glimpse of the famous motorcycle fabricator as he tried to master the Willy's. In the end it was smiles for everyone as James entertained the fans with a large smoking burnout and an exciting pass down the 1/8th mile.

Another important organization that was in attendance at the inagural event were 6 race cars from the Beat the Heat organization. Beat the Heat is made up of law enforcement officers who also enjoy racing and they make numerous visits to local schools and communities to encourage our youth to take their racing to the strip and off of the street.

As the hours wound down, the diehard racers were still in attendance working out all of the bugs and gremlins in their cars in preparation for the upcoming season. Should drag racing be in your blood then check with the track to get their race schedule for this year and bring your car out for some fun.
