Subject: More on the Babson show
In reply to: Monique 's message, "Back from the Babson show!" on 19:36:00 09/21/02 Sat

Wow. Molle's report was really, really quite thorough. I'm impressed. Some of it is just a blur for me. A few of my own personal highlights, though:

Before the show:

The show started about 20-25 minutes late. The natives started getting restless at about a quarter after... so they started clapping, then chanting. My favorite chant? "Col-in, Col-in..."

The start of the show:

The new Babson President gets up to speak, and jokes about how the bad news is, he's the entertainment. A voice from the back calls out, "Take it off!"

Chip and Colin are finally introduced:

Chip and Colin rush to the stage. Chip is in the lead, but then stops short, holds both arms out and defers to Colin.

The two explain what they're about to, and stress that the audience's suggestions will help determine the success of the show:

Colin: So if you love something, it's because we're gifted improv artists, and we're just that good. If you hated it, it's because your suggestions sucked. [pause to laughter] And if it doesn't seem that good, well, then it just might be art.

Chip and Colin take some questions before Chip's first song:

Chip: The question is, 'Can you call Colin "Captain Hair"?' Yes, yes you can.

Before Sentences:

(Colin had passed around pieces of papers and pens for people to write down their Sentence suggestions. Chip goes into the audience to retrieve the suggestions.)

Chip: I notice I'm not getting the pens back... interesting...

During Sentences:

Colin to Chip [reading from paper]: You may not be a balding Canadian, but looks aren't everything.
[pause for wild applause]
Colin: Why did they have to say I was Canadian?

During Moving/Dead People:

The guy Colin had picked out from the audience had to be a Whoser, or else he was just a huge fan of the show. He was totally into the game, and was quite good when moving Colin about.

When the time came for Colin and Chip to move the audience participants about, they stressed that they were to pretend to be dead... so the guy, who was playing the king in the Shakespearean skit, promptly gave up all muscle control over his body. When they went to stand him up from his "throne," he offered no help whatsoever. Chip and Colin ended up dragging him around... and at one point, when Chip was holding onto the guy, he delivers the line, then looks at Colin and asks "Could you give me a hand here?" Colin stops what he's doing and helps him take the guy back to his stool... which he proceeds to fall right off of about 15 seconds later.

Sound Effects:

Chip and Colin are picking two people to deliver the sound effects. While Colin goes into the audience, Chip stays on stage. This college student, about 6'1", and, well, with a robust presence, let's say, enthusiastically jumps up. To which Chip dramatically points to him and bellows, "I'm calling you out, big guy! Come on up here!" The kid goes up to the stage... and when he discovers he's doing Sound Effects, gives a look like he immediately wants to leave. "Just remember," Chip warns him, "You wanted this."

During Sound Effects, they're build up to something, I forget what... Chip explains what he's going to do, over and over. Colin looks at him and says, "You explain things too much."

But later, when they're building up to the big finale, Colin explains that Chip's going to shoot his gun, use his little whip, do the girl scream (because, as Chip says, "It worked for him"), then Colin's going to throw a barrel or something, it'll ricochet off the trees, etc., etc. (it was really elaborate). However, during the first run through, the girl doing the sound effects screams too early.

Chip: Oh, I'm sorry! My gun did the little girl scream... see! You said I explained things too much. Maybe not, huh? Maybe not!

I'm sure that all this doesn't read as funny as it was, but they had me laughing so hard all night long. My throat was sore later!
