Subject: Summary of Tuesday's San Jose show

awesome show... i was curious to see what bob'd bring -- josh? fitz? drummer? no band at all? he's opening for a legit band, so he's gotta have a band, right? when he strolled out on stage, he was flanked by a woman named Elise (i assume that's the spelling) on a capoed baritone guitar and on the bass - to my extreme pleasure and surprise - mr. eric avery! for those who don't know, eric was the original bass player for jane's addiction. i thought it was kind of weird that martyn lenoble (who went from thelonious to porno to the current Relapse bass slot) played on the last BT tour and now eric has made the same journey in reverse, going from jane's to deconstruction to polar bear, and now to the bicycle thief.

according to a story bob told mid-set, bob went to the silverlake lounge one night and heard elise singing. he thought... "now THERE'S someone who needs to be in the bicycle thief". and i think she's a good fit. a good guitarist (played no lead lines, mostly sparkly chords) and has a really beautiful voice which she really unleashed on the closing tune, singing a back-and-forth type deal with bob as he repeated "...and it's my fault". if you get out to the shows, you'll like her.

bob never got his Martin acoustic to work properly, and Elise's guitar was mixed fairly low so if anybody gets boots of this show, you'll mostly hear bob singing over eric's awesome bass work. which isn't all bad... it was really nice. eric's playing wasn't as spartan as some of his jane's lines, and it actually wasn't as empty a sound as bass and vocals might seem.

i don't know the setlist, and don't know the names of some of the songs because whenever i spin the cd to listen or play along with, i never note the titles. there were a couple of new tunes that i hadn't heard... one about new orleans, and another about how one isn't alone in this crappy world.

bob talked quite a bit... told stories about going to high school in san jose...er... actually milpitas. hinted that he may have broken up with max due to infidelity on her part (he said "i wrote this song 3 years ago, but it's funny because it actually happened to me a few days ago", and then played "offstreet parking". and later he asked "has anyone had to go through someone cheating on them?" eric raised his hand. bob: "well, it's very painful". and then before "max, jill called", bob was looking at the setlist on the ground by eric's feet and was complaining "awww! who wrote that name there? who wrote that NAAAAAME!??")

it was really intimate. the trio were seated on chair in a semi-circle at the front of the stage. i intercepted eric coming off the stage and blustered something stupid about really respecting him for not going with Jane's... i think he thought i was an idiot. but i really do respect him. i wouldn't have had the balls to drop a big-time act like jane's and play with a real living music group like BT. bob has really been like a father to me in terms of telling me about life, about how to respond, about living in general. eric is just as real, i think, and it was really great to see two of my favorite people in the music scene on the same stage.

thanks, bob.
