The Bicycle Thief

You Come And Go Like A Pop Song
(Epic/Artemis)
**** (4 stars out of 5)

Impressive return of missing Monster man

You will, of course, remember Thelonious Monster, the weird West Coast alt.rockers who drowned in acclaim but couldn't wash their toes in record sales. When they split in the early nineties, mainman Bob Forrest took a long sabbatical, but is now back with an intriguing left-of-centre combo. Guests include names from the Chili Peppers and That Dog, but it's Forrest's gumption which gives these striking songs edge, swing and lyrical savvy. "Song For A Kevin Spacey Movie" and "MacArthur Park Revisited" are, as you'll have noticed, enigmatically titled; "Stoned" is not. "Tennis Shoes" best exemplifies his fetching fusion of arty angst and rock swagger. Criminally good.
