Assembly poll must be called, says Adams
16 September 2003

SINN Fein President Gerry Adams today questioned the commitment of Ulster Unionists to future power-sharing - but insisted an election must be called.

As inter-party contact continued amid speculation over a possible autumn Assembly poll, Mr Adams warned the failure to set an election date would be the "worst-case scenario".

Speaking after hour-long talks with SDLP leader Mark Durkan at Stormont, the Sinn Fein leader said progress was not just up to republicans or those involved in "so-called" paramilitarism.

Mr Durkan said, however, a certain election date "would create incentives and imperatives on its own."

Mr Adams said: "The worst-case scenario would be no elections. As a democrat, I am sure that you will agree that there should be no pre-conditions on the people's right to vote.

``We must all do our best to make sure that the structures are sustainable, but who is to guarantee that the Ulster Unionist Party would get involved in sustainable institutions?"
